Star Wars comic books

By ssage, in X-Wing Off-Topic

I recently was looking at some of the different SW comics that are out there. Can anybody recommend one or two specific titles/series that are good?

Darth Vader is a good read and so is Star Wars. I haven't read Lando, Cheewie, or Leia so I can't comment on those.

Those are the new series that came out.

The one I liked from the old Dark horse series was Legacy.

If you only want a couple get Vader and Star Wars. I've read them all but those are the main two. If you want more get Kanan too.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll check out at least Star Wars and Vader. I did see a couple good reviews on Star Wars.

I got the first year of Star Wars and enjoyed it. But I stopped because 5 minutes of reading isn't worth the price...

Kanan is a lot of fun more then I expected it to be honestly. It fixes one of the things that I hated about TCW namely the lack of CIS military leaders who aren't evil and honestly believe in the Separatist cause rather then being motivated by greed.

If you're willing to wait a few months after release to read it, Marvel Unlimited is your friend.

I enjoyed the KOTOR comics

I did that some time ago, like shortly after they started it. It was a great deal but far too often there were gaps in a series. Like you'd be reading 101, then 102, 103, and find out the next one was 110.

I ran into the same thing, but not so much in newer releases.

Doctor Strange was criminally full of gaps

I think Darth Vader is the best comic series. It does tie in often with Star Wars, which is alright. I think Kannan is the 2nd best, though. I think it's well done.

The other ones are all mini series. I liked Lando as it tells the story of his buddy. Chewbacca was...OK. Leia was not that interesting. Shattered Empire was ok. Trying to recall which ones there were.

Keep in mind Vader and Star Wars are the only two long-term ongoing titles right now. Everything either is or has been a limited series.

You pretty much need to read Vader and Star Wars together as they tie together so often. Plus Vader Down one issue is a must.

I enjoyed the KOTOR comics

Yeah, there were some really cool and pretty lengthy Old Republic runs, which were consistently good.

I need to get started on Vader at some point, I can't see how a comic about him would not be awesomeness from page to page! Actually, there was a great pre-Disney Vader one I read a few years ago, don't know if it was a one-off or part of a longer run but it had Vader hunting down the last suriving Jedi in the aftermath of the Clone Wars, there was one great issue that was just him against about 8 Jedi.... Don't think it's much of a spoiler to say that it did not go well for them! :D

Star Wars and Vader are good... but after the Vader Down story arc, I decided to throw in the towel. It was good, but it felt like a good stopping point. Feels like they've wrapped up everything they were trying to do, and want to jump ship before they start a new story arc.

The Shattered Empire series is interesting, it's only like 4 issues and gives you some backstory on Poe.

Dark times... which crossed over with KOTOR due to the Muur Amulet.

Kannan is long term, right? It's been going on a long time.

I see Poe has his own series coming out soon. Not sure if it's going to be long running or not, but I might check that out too.

From what I've read of the Marvel runs so far:

STAR WARS

Volume 1: Skywalker Strikes: Really good fun. Captures the characters nicely, shows us the Rebellion doing something active and, well, rebellious, and has Luke and Vader's first face-to-face meeting, which is beautiful. Definitely worth reading. Crosses over with the first arc of Darth Vader as well.

Volume 2: Showdown on the Smuggler's Moon: Considerably weaker than the first arc. Drags quite badly in the middle, though a splash page of Han, Leia and Chewie with lightsabers almost makes up for it. Some really interesting ideas (like a Hutt who collects Jedi artefacts) sadly let down by some weird twists and unconvincing writing.

DARTH VADER

Volume 1: Vader: Vader, Jabba, Boba Fett, psychotic analogues of R2 and 3PO, the revelation that the Emperor is preparing replacements for when Vader fails, and the Dark Lord of the Sith being punished for his failures... and plotting to gain his own power base. Superb.

Volume 2: Shadows and Secrets: Continues in the same vein. There's a really intriguing relationship developing between Vader and his agent, with a dynamic that kinda puts me in mind of Anakin and Ahsoka. And a very clever idea regarding Padmé's funeral and why it took this long to discover Luke's existence. Delves into the underworld of the galaxy a bit, which I always like. Left me looking forward to the next arc a lot.

KANAN

Volume 1: The Last Padawan

A nice look at what a lone padawan had to do to survive Order 66. My favourite part was the reaction of the two Clone commanders who turn on Depa and Caleb. They chase him, determined to hunt him down, and that leads to an interesting twist regarding the "programming" of the Clones.

PRINCESS LEIA

Loved it. Simply loved. Utterly beautiful stylised art, a story shows Leia working through her responsibility for the death of Alderaan in exactly the right way, and an actual human relationship with another woman. Also, the scene on Naboo where she thinks a giant image of Padme looks at her made me tear up a bit. Also, Nien Nunb, and nothing with that cheeky 'lil Sullustan can ever be bad – especially since it's kind of an origin story for him.

I have a regular subscription for Vader....an absolute must read. Artwork is great and the story arcs are well plotted.

Kanan is ongoing, no?

That's what I thought, too.

Thanks for all the suggestions/input everyone. I was able to pick up a few issues of Star Wars and am enjoying it so far. The shop I went to didn't have 1-5, so I'll have to find those somewhere. I plan on getting the Vader series too.

Kanan is ending, I believe.

Now, Poe Dameron's new series (aka New X-wing Series) is going to be an ongoing.

Kanan is ending, I believe.

The latest comic, the last one in that arc, says "16th March" for the next Kanan issue - so, it appears to still be ongoing.
