So I played with Tarkin for the first time today...against Motti (the card I had originally envisioned to run at my comp) and I just have to say how amazing it is.

Tarkin gave my two carrier VSD1's the ability to control my Tie Bomber/Interceptor ball and inflict massive damage on an ISD 1...and when push came to shove allowed me to switch things up to repair or more so inflict critical damage when need be...Tarkin offers serious flexibility when you need it most!

Tarkin's ability to make any ship Command 1-ish at the extra cost of 3 points per ship is a very powerful ability indeed, especially if you're playing with 2 medium ships at 300 points or 2 large/1L1M at 400 points !

I will say Tarkin is amazing because he can basically do Anything ALL of the other imp commanders can do, except he is one card.

I may have to buy the shrimp to bring the Purina General to the table.

I was just kidding, so far the Imperial Admiral I have the best track record with is indeed OG Tarkin himself. I don't think I've ever had below a 7-3 with him, because I like multi-purpose ships and he allows just that. Vader I've had mixed results with, but it's probably because I was playing Tarkin lists with him

On a side note, after listening to your latest episode, I was stunned by how polarized the Admiral discussions were depending on the faction and it really echoes what we see here : Imperial Admirals are perceived either as super good or super bad, while discussions are more circumspect when it comes to Rebel Admirals (even Ackbar, it seems that the craze has passed).

Maybe it's because ships are what define Rebel lists and Rebel Admirals bring out the specificities of certain builds, while Imperial Ships are good at multiple things but require both specializations and active commands to take the most out of them, Imperial Admirals really define the playstyle of the list with each their quirks in a min/max scenario (with Tarking promoting tactical genius and the use of the proper command at the proper time, Screed ensuring decisive actions, Motti being the most squadron friendly Commander due to lessening the need for Engineering Commands, Ozzel liking his Navigate Commands and Vader probably being very generous with large/medium ships that spam Engineering Commands)

I actually really like Vader as an admiral, but Tarkin ties for my favorite. He's just so amazing at increasing your command efficiency.

Grand Moff Token is next up on my list to actually learn to play. I love Motti and the ability to play bumper cars with my ISDs if anyone dares to close, but on I have had success with both Mon Mothma and Garm in Rebel lists. I haven't used him since I picked up the wave 1 expansions, but I think it is time to go back to Tarkin. He has the potential to make VSDs shine mor than any other admiral atm.

I joke around alot and I also take dramatic stances on specific things. The one thing I believe in most is a player will play better and have more fun playing with the toys he loves. A player that is passionate about a unit deemed subpar by the community can make that unit shine.

The joy of Armada, at this time, is that there really isn't an overall 'Best' of anything...only 'Best/Most Fun' for YOU...and overzealous opinions.

Its super fun to elaborate on our opinions, but most is settled on the game table.

I like tarkin with defense Liason you get navigation and engineering officer 12 points on three ships for 9 points instead of 36. Brings down tarkin's cost in my eyes by 27 points and for 11 points extra I get some kicking carrier support across the board. People underestimate a demolisher with an interceptor escort and a token. Plus my VSD carrier with hanger bay/ boosted coms and flight controllers can keep getting squdron commands and tokens until it get in trouble. Alway nice to hit the engineering button when you need it and only then. Screed was my imperial admiral for a while but I am playing more with tarkin. Plus having the world's promo looks cool on the board!

I have nothing constructive to add. I just love Tarkin also.

When he starts chucking out tokens so I can flick shields back on and adjust speed without comprising my orders he rules.

I once flicked 3 shields back on my VSD because he enhanced my Engineering command with a token. (I actually used the defense liaison to convert a move command as well).

My favorite though is an engineering team on the GSD, you can remove a crit when Tarkin chucks you a token!

Because I don't usually engage until turn two I reach my opponent with 3 tokens on my VSD/ISD. (two Tarkin Tokens (TTs) and one bank from turn 1).

I think he is incorrectly seen as a crutch just like the liaisons, when in fact he is an awesome flexible enhancement.

His added flexibility although apparent to your opponent is very difficult to accommodate for.

I just started using twin VSDs spamming squadron to break though my opponents shields and keeping my speed and defenses in check with TTs. Need more games but i'll see how my opponents adapt.

If you consider Redundant Shields on an ISD will regen back 5(6?) shields over the course of a game, and Tarkin can give this to all your ships except the Raider per turn, his value is immense.

I have friends that don't get on with him, they want to guarantee damage or thrust, fair enough. I want all round flexibility. I thought I was special until i saw this thread!

I played against him last night in a 2xVSD & 2xGSD list and he did shine. He handed out repair tokens like Smarties keeping the VSDs alive with 3 repaired shields a round in the final turns. Granting Nav tokens to Engine Tech GSDs mid game was particularly annoying and my tractor beam was therefore a waste of space.

On your very specific last point : not necessarily ! The fact that he had to keep handing out nav tokens instead of CF or Engineering tokens. I see the Q7 as forcing my opponent to counter it (which is easy) rather than as a means to slow down the target ships.
