My 3D-printed accessory megathread

By comatose, in Star Wars: Armada

To avoid clutter in my previous thread, I'm starting a new one for my 3D-printed accessories. They are all available via Shapeways in all your favorite colors. The plastics are smooth to the touch without filament lines.

Currently Available

Ship Trays - $23.95 each

Damage Tracker - $13.95 each

In the design queue

The two things I've thought about are an upgrade card holder that fits with the damage tracker, and the other is an idea I'm calling "action stands". The stands that come shipped from FFG have all the ships flying straight and level. I'd like to have some options to pose my ships with different formations and looks. I might even try to make them adjustable.

interesting...

****, I like that red and blue!

Consider the rest of my set ordered

Is there an option to get trays with four defense token slots for ISD's and MC80's?

They already have four slots, the picture just shows 3 tokens in them. :)

Do sleeved ship cards fit?

Do sleeved ship cards fit?

Yep, sleeved and unsleeved carts fit perfectly (unsleeved with a teensy bit of slack). The alternate art cards also fit without covering up vital information.

The top post now has a picture of the damage tracker model. The damage cards insert into a slot one at a time on a steep angle. As you add more damage, the lower numbers are hidden by the new cards. Both players can see how much damage a ship has without laying the cards across the table and counting. What do you think?

Do ultra pro ship cards fit. So I need 11 that is $231 plus shipping. Hmmm.do they come in gunmetal gray?

Hmmm 11 damage card slots or keep using a 12mm 12 sided die? Decisions decision. I forgot I need upgrade card holders. Assuming those will be $15. $550. Could we make it an even $500 with shipping?

I reckon the damage card holders are a neat idea. Would love to see photos of a prototype with cards in it!

Might make multiple crits tricky, but say you lay damage cards on the long side and crits stand up on the short side of the card, you may be able to see two at once. Yeah. I can see that working

:);)

However, I hear the challenge, and I think the idea just hit me to significantly reduce the cost of a card holder. I'm not sure it's printable or practical, but I'm willing to give it a shot.

(Edit: first read made me think you were being sarcastic. Third read made me not so sure. Let me know if you were serious.)

I play 650-700 points so there are 10-11 ships on board usually. So $550 was accessories for all of them. Counter trays and damage card trays. I didn't get an answer on the ultra pro holders. All my ship cards are held in ultra pro 3x5 top loaders.

Cool idea on the damage holder but an issue I see is with objectives that give you the option to flip over a random face down damage card this wouldn't be allowed as both players could see the crit on the other side and know what to flip over. I think damage cards will always need to be face down unfortunately due to this.

Got to see these trays today in person. Really smart and compact!

So I did some more tweaking, and I think it's ready for me to print a couple prototypes to try out. This model gets the price below $15 on Shapeways.

Here's a couple pictures of models with "cards" shown. Based on the angle and putting facedown cards turned 90 degrees, I don't think your opponent will be able to read the facedown cards without putting their face very near the table. Even then, only the first damage will be visible and it will have half the card covered.

Thoughts? I'll probably go print at least one prototype tomorrow night.

Looks spot on

Here's the printed prototype. Ignore the curved glitches, that's from fast-printing on an entry-level printer. The bottom right image is shot with my phone sitting on the table. In other words, someone will have to put their face on the table to read it. The only thing I'm not sure I like is that I did not put a bottom on this which means you can't just pick it up and move it. You have to slide it if you don't want the cards to fall out. That may not really be an issue. What do you think?

Looks good, great design for the job!

What would you estimate it would add to cost to put a thin bottom on it?

What would it add to make it as wide as the horizontal cards?

As the kind of accessory that we'll need a lot of, keeping costs minimal is important, but I'm curious as to just how much difference it would make

Thanks! Adding a thin bottom would add about $1. As they are now, I would do a introductory price for $12.95 and probably $13.95 after a couple weeks. As you said, quantity makes me want to keep it as low as possible. I'm not sure if I should make an 8 and 14 for larger ships including an ISD with Motti. A standard ISD or a Motti VSD could just use two of the 6's.

I played in our store championship with the damage tracker this weekend, and they worked very well. It was easy to see how much damage each ship had taken, and my opponents were unable to see the bottom of the face-down cards. The damage tracker is now up for sale on Shapeways at a special introductory price.

I was just about to put the pricing back to normal when I saw that Shapeways is doing free shipping through March 13. This is as cheap as they'll be!

Shapeways is running a special this week in strong, flexible plastics. They are offering 20% off with the code SFONSALE20. They offer a lot of different colors, and the ones I have gotten from them seem like they will last forever.

Accessories are optional by their very nature. $550 would be 36 holders, which seems pretty extreme by any standard. :) Personally, I don't know that I would ever use an upgrade card holder, and I would only need 4 damage holders as Rebel player who rarely uses the MC-80. Both card holders are because that's what people asked me to design, so blame them. ;)

Did you ever look into bigger damage card holders? I'd be interested in something that could hold 11, can't really manage an ISD with Motti (not that I do that often).
