Dengar vs Biggs

By MegaSilver, in X-Wing Rules Questions

I had an interesting situation come up with Dengar vs Biggs. Even though it never triggered, I decided to bring it up.

Based on the wording, it seems like Dengar can shoot the ship that shot at him, regardless if Biggs is nearby.

Biggs' ability, for reference:

  • Other friendly ships at Range 1 cannot be targeted by attacks if the attacker could target you instead.

Dengar's ability, for reference:

  • Once per round after defending, if the attacker is inside your firing arc, you may perform an attack against that ship.

There is precedence with Fire Control System and Captain Kagi, as shown in the FAQ:

  • If an enemy ship equipped with Fire-Control System is at range to acquire a target lock on Captain Kagi and attacks a ship other than Captain Kagi, the target lock provided by Fire-Control System must be acquired on the defender, not Captain Kagi. If the enemy ship also has Weapons Engineer, its second target lock must be acquired on Captain Kagi.

So, it looks like Dengar overrides Biggs. Thoughts?

EDIT: Also, looks like if I have and use Gunner, that Gunner attack has to be on Biggs.

Seeing as I'm the one who brought up the FCS/Kagi precedent, I would say this follows that. And yes, since Gunner is just an additional attack, Biggs would take it.

I concur. You have to shoot Biggs "if able", with Dengar's counter attack you are not able to shoot Biggs (unless he was the one who attacked you), but with the gunner shot you ARE able to target Biggs, and so must* do so.

(With all the standard Biggs caveats, "or target someone else far from Biggs or don't attack at all")

The wording on Biggs includes "if the attacker could target you instead" while Dengar's pilot ability specifies that you must target the ship that attacked you. Because Dengar's ability specifies a target, shooting at Biggs is not a legal option and the "if the attacker could target you instead" clause kicks in.

Sorry to necro this but that is quite useful to know. Rebel regen look shaky after the Jumpmaster came out due to spike of torpedo damage that 3 Scouts could put out. Dengaroo looks like being more popular now that triple U-boats but less of a harsh match-up for Regenerators.

Flown properly, it looks like Dengar could be forced to split his fire if you approach correctly with Biggs out of arc and your other ship within Range 1 of Biggs but inside Dengar's arc. With his normal shot, Dengar has to shoot Biggs but with his revenge shot, he must target the ship that attacked him.

Taking a few hits on a different ship (that can potentially regen) while putting the others on Biggs will maximise the value of both Biggs and the Regen ship as well as preventing Dengar for burning through all the defenses of 1 ship.

Expecting Dengar to end up in a position in the first engagement where he can shoot Biggs without Biggs being in his arc to trigger the return shot seems... brave. He absolutely wants to focus fire and he's not gonna give Biggs the option of getting a shot without getting killed in return.

This, especially since Dengar moves after Biggs and I would think most people are more like me and if Biggs is on the table you just target him first to get him dead as soon as possible so you don't have to even worry about it later when you are targeting someone else.
