Time to actually put my current studies in post-grad Law to the test, I think. I have a few ideas up my sleave for sorting this out, hopefully it'll work.

While I'm not a fan of Dark Reign I have to say this is a shame, it seems GW's lawyers are fiddling for things to do these days and launching cease and desists on just about anything that bears a resemblance to 40k and fantasy.

I think Dark Reign has become a victim of its own success...

To be honest, I was wondering why this did not happend earlier.

DarkReign used an awefull lot of artwork "belonging" to GW in their own fan products. This simply HAD to lead to legal issues at some point.

Please take note that I do not appreciate the close down. But the way things were running, I am not wondering about it to happen.

While I do not know the letter you received, perhaps the GW lawyers might agree to a re-launch if you "weed out" all of the artwork that origins from Black Industrie / FFG products?

The annoying thing is that this is mostly other people submitting images and text from GW books, and, of course, completely ignoring our rules telling people not to do it. The only reason this hasn't been upheld as diligently as it should is because:

1) The huge amount of stuff submitted to the site means it's hard to vet all of it.

2) The fact that all of us admins are volunteers with outside lives. I myself am doing post-grad Law at the moment, which leaves little time for the site. The same goes for the other admins.

If people would stop and think about what they are submitting, this wouldn't have happened.

I do wonder why so many people say that they aren't fans of the site, as though you dislike it We've done nothing but try to run a site for fan-made materials, so what's not to like? Just confuses me is all.

I think the site is fantastic, hope you can stay online for many years to come.

Now I don't think I've posted anything on the Dark Reign messageboards so far (sorry, it's just that im juggling many messageboards at the same time, and most of my discussions about Dark Heresy and Rogue Trader take place here rather than anywhere else), but I use ot all the time to get ahold of fan-made material for both respective games, and I like the site a lot.

Are you seriously saying that some people are actually negatively inclined towards Dark Reign? It sounds really freakish if that's the case...

As the sight goes, just yank the art you have up on it and it might be good. It might not be so much the submissions as it is your banners and what-not. That's the obvious infringement and that might be all they noticed and all that caused them to write you. If it would help and you need a bit of banner art, you welcome to use bits and pieces from a few of my 40k related paintings with some credit to me mentioned somewhere legible of course ;-). Just ask and it will be provided. Not as awesome as the official stuff, but it won't get you into trouble either.

Well, it's looking like my report of Dark Reign's demise was greatly exaggerated.

Seems that as long as the (mostly fan-posted) IP infringing stuff is removed DR should continue!!

As Peacekeeper said a lot of things have been said in the past and more than a few prominent members of DR acted very poorly while others no longer with us (Patriot we hardly knew ye...) acted very badly. I'm sure I was one of them so this isnt a vendetta or anything, just a difference of opinion between myself and members of the site.

Yea, Patriot was hardly the best "ambassador" for the site, I admit, though him and others that have acted like him have been kicked since. Generally we run quite a pleasant site, now that the hot heads and egotists have left.

Might not be the site for you now, but if you ever want to check it out, you are more than welcome.

And yea, seems as though if we remove any artwork belonging to GW/FFG, we should be fine.

What's strange is that we've been told not to put the FFG news articles up anymore, despite Sam Stewart and Ross Watson posting up links and stuff themselves. Seems GW are acting on behalf of FFG as well, and without mentioning it to them...

In his defense, Patriot did make a few good fan supplements. I actually really like his Space Marine PDF.

Was it worse than the bickering in the WHFRP 3rd edition forum? (not pointing any fingers or anything, but some debates over there have turned out really ugly and childish, regardless of what the participants actually think of the game)
