Scum and Villainy Podcast Episode 26: Rage against the Machine

By sozin, in X-Wing

What would the flight lines of an ACE, Poe, Stresshog look like?

I've been fooling around with placing an asteroid in my corner, setting up the Y close to the table edge, Red Ace behind the asteroid, and Poe in between shading close to Ace (missing the asteroid of course). Ace goes 4 straight, the others 3. Next turn you can 3 bank the Y, and short bank the T-70s, possibly with boosts. This has given me good lines throw asteroids if necessary and a wide arc coverage as well as keeping the hog and Poe in the range three area.

Just started listening - great episode so far!

If I run Poe, Ace, and Stresshog.... How will I run Horton?

Just because the leading minds of Competitive X-Wing all say you should start with the Stressbot, that doesn't mean you have to listen to them. You can always fly Horton... cause... as cool as it would be... there's never going to be a "mustachio" card that makes him any more awesome than he already is. The card you are actually waiting on is General Horton Salm and it will be a crew card that you can use in Epic... and that won't help you win tournaments today! Now, if you can WIN at the Worlds event... you can get them to create a Mustachio card to make your dreams come true (though, creating a Rebel card instead of Scum and Villainy would be a betrayal!)... so how are you going to get there?!?

(Too much Hype, Captain Rocky?!? You've got widows to face in your training montage, remember?)

Win Worlds. Make a Horton only title that gives EPT. Got it.

Actually, the funny thing is I'm not sure an EPT even would be enough. Although I've been 1 point off on my builds with him too often to count.

Horton Stresshog. You know you want it.

Only 33 points.

So. I was not going to run Horton at my SC. But then Sozin had to bring up the fact that someone in Jacksonville won a tournament with him. I fell right back into those sweet mustachioed arms. Why did you do that Sozin. I was getting better!

Would you take it to Regional? If not, this is not the Salm you are looking for...

Also, if you don't buy Red Ace is a Fox... then you can only assume it is a mustache wearing BA Tank! Fly the mustache!

When I first looked at the Boba Fett crew card I thought it would be a top card for Scum, now I'm not so sure. I'm not sure how to use him effectively. Also if he does become a main stay, what does that mean for the game?

It seems like you have to go through a lot of work to get payoff right?

There's a lot of work for that but lets say that you can get him to work most games, does this force the meta towards generics with few upgrades?

I don't think Boba forces toward generics. I do think it forces squads away from relying on a single card. If you are happy with one of two ships carrying the game at the end, you're probably okay against Boba. If your ships still operate well enough with a card gone, you're probably okay.

Examples: Fat Han is diminished, but capable with a card gone. Dash is boned with his cannon removed.

And the Emperor Shuttle sans the Emperor, Fel without Push, Whisper without Advanced Cloak...

And the Emperor Shuttle sans the Emperor, Fel without Push, Whisper without Advanced Cloak...

All those sound great in theory, but realize what it means to get there. Whisper losing advanced cloak means you are through shields and has one hull left (at best), so you've almost got her anyway -- it's only useful if it's the first hull and the crit doesn't finish her off or kill her. The shuttle will still be able to use Emperor until you get past shields and whenever that crit lands. If it's your first target, that means you're still going to be facing fully stacked aces who have probably been damaging your list and are unharmed. Fel is absolutely the most vulnerable, assuming he can be hit. Having handled stresshog lists myself with interceptors and seen the stresshog defeated by exactly the ships it's supposed to beat regularly (Whisper, Fel, etc..) I think that Fel will not have a problem either avoiding Fett or making sure it is the one ships that doesn't hit him.

Boba works the best against big ships, and those usually have, as has been pointed out, several upgrades that make them work, but it can certainly slow them down.

I'm not saying he isn't good to throw in a list where that crew slot isn't being used, but he isn't powerful enough in scum by himself to push the meta back toward generics. (And one of the most expensive cards he can discard is TLT which is actually found most frequently on generics).

His EPT meshes perfectly with TLT. I think he's best at 31 points with TLT or at 33 with VI (and the droid) since he then hunts Whisper pretty effectively.

I think for Ello Asty - you consider running the old r2 unit - because if it gets stressed, you've got more options for destress.

Oh - and for Attani Mindlink - It plays around stresshog / tactician tlt. You can doublestress a single ship - which will single stress the other ship , but, with a green, you clear the mindlinked friend - and it can focus, passing a focus back to the overstressed ship - you have to bring the stress machine to bear on the other ship shut down the focus passing - but in the time you do that, your double stressed ship unstresses and then can pass a focus back.

On ships like Kaato Leeachos as a friend - or a z-95 where you don't want to put your stress energy, you can ignore stress. Toss this on 4LOM - and now - you're even getting your stress back at you... There's good builds for this I think.

Excellent episode with some really cool wave 8 possibilities explored. I think the hidden gem in wave 8 is the 4-Lom crew card. At one point he's a steal, and because it's a single ion token, you can use it once per game for no negative on a big ship. I've done the maths on him and Zuckuss, and 4-LOM is brutal, especially with any alpha-striking stuff.

This is my current wave 8 list that I can't wait to give a go:

37 Scout w/ Deadeye, Boba, R4-agro, ProtonT, EM, Feedback, Guidance.

36 Scout w/ Deadeye, 4-LOM, R4-agro, PlasmaT, EM, Feedback, Guidance.

13 Enforcer.

14 Banana w/ Feedback.

Between R4, guidance and the PT's pseudo-focus, you're reliably getting 4 hits with all of the torpedo shots, which makes anything cry, then against aces you've got two large bases that can barrel roll and feedback. Also during the first engagement, the enforcer and boba scout can very reliably strip the TLT from a PS2 Y-wing before it gets to shoot, which I find hilarious. The 4-LOM scout with his Plasma torpedoes can knock out pretty much any Rebel regenerator's shields in a single shot, opening them up to taking hull damage or a boba crit.

Suffice to say I can't wait for wave 8.

I like this squad a lot. I'm not a big fan of z95s so I think I would run a Thug with TLT and Unhinged instead. I'm can't wait for these ships to come out.

Scum really did get a lot of nice tools. I'm really hoping we get another strong archetype from them. IG-88 just doesn't feel scummy enought.

I want a top build that is just dirty mean. Boba is mean. I think we will see a lot of the Jumpmaster, especially the scout

Why the Scout specifically?
