Tie Defender may have found its niche

By brosephus, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hello!

This is my first post here. I'm a relative newcomer to this game (started playing in December 2015), and was drawn to it by the Tie Defender, a ship I absolutely loved in the Tie Fighter game growing up. Since I started playing, I've struggled to find a way to play the Tie Defender. So far, I own the following:

1x Core Set (Force Awakens)
1x Imperial Aces
1x Tie Interceptor
1x Tie Advanced
1x Lambda Shuttle
1x Firespray 31
1x Tie Punisher
1x Tie Defender

While the Tie Defender remains just about impossible to field in a normal game, I've discovered it was almost made for Mission 7: Cutting the Cord. By setting the Tie Defender as the prototype, and having 4x Tie Fighters (Tie/fo's) as harassing fire, a buddy of mine that I was teaching the game to easily destroyed a rebel squad consisting of a B-Wing, X-wing (Resistance), and an E-Wing. Even with a Rebel squad with beefed up points, he lost no ships (got down to 1 hull on one of the Ties). (The Rebel player let him borrow two Tie/fo's.) The squad:

TIE/D
COL Vessery
+TIE Mk. II

TIE/fo
x2 Epsilon SQDN Pilot
x2 Zeta SQDN Pilot
+Weapons Guidance (on one of the Zeta Ties)

Total: 100 Squad Points.

The TIE/D danced circles around the rebels, especially with the prototype upgrades. By flying the TIE/fo's in two separate groups from the flanks and keeping the TIE/D out of the firing arcs of the rebels, the game was over in a handful of rounds.

The Rebel Player (a friend of mine that I play frequently) uses the E-Wing, B-Wing, and X-Wing almost every game. I'll get his squad list from him to share. He plans on running an E-Wing exclusive squad next time I bring my heavy hitters out.

Anyway, hope this helps those looking for TIE/D strategy/tactics. Enjoy!
