Greedo + Assault Missiles

By Atredes, in X-Wing

As the title asks, how would this work exactly? Would each damage be dealt face up?

It would most definitely not deal face up damage to ships hit by the splash damage. Greedo says "the first damage card is dealt face up."

I'm almost positive the face up card would only be dealt to the defender of the original secondary attack but I'm not sure exactly where in the rules I can find complete support for this.

Only the first damage, not the first damage to each ship. However, that doesn't necessarily mean the defender. If the defender only loses shields, then the first card dealt would possibly be "splash" damage onto another ship's Hull, which Greedo would flip face-up.

My first thought was no, but Greedo specifies "while attacking", not "the defender".

Assault Missiles says "if this attack hits". The step where that is determined is the "Compare Results" step, so in theory the AoE damage from the missile should happen then.

Strict RAW seems to imply that the face-up card would have to be one of the AoE cards (unless no AoE happened, or the AoE was on shields), since the missile's main damage waits to happen until the next step.

Thanks to both of you. That makes perfect sense, Obi. Trying to think of new ways to use Greedo so that helps.

Rather sadly, Greedo specifies "The first time you attack".
Therefore, the splash damage that occurs outside the attack doesn't get to use his ability, even if the assault missiles hit only Shields on your Hit victim.

Was just coming in here to post that. The splash damage is not considered to be part of the attack. It's the same reason it doesn't shut off Stealth Devices.

Unfortunately, I think you're right. Greedo just wanted to be cool for, like, 5 minutes. :(

It seems like AM deals splash DURING the steps of the attack, though. Greedo doesn't, strictly-speaking, refer ONLY to damage from the attack's dice, it only cares if a card is dealt during the attack.

So does that mean Greedo + Cluster missiles and/or TLTs will do face up damage each time they hit in each attack?

No. Each performs two attacks, only the first of which can be "the first time you attack".

It is triggered by a step in the attack, and therefore interrupts it and occurs concordantly, but is not one OF the steps of the attack, and therefore isn't part of the attack.

Just kind of a side note,

The splash damage from AM should actually occur BEFORE the regular attack damage, since AM triggers in the compare results step.
