How to start ... with Z95

By Dalcor, in X-Wing

I believe there will be a lot of themes like this on the web and in this theme, but lets say there are some criterias no other have

My friend would like to start with bloody rebell traitor scum, he doesnt need the starter as I have two of them so I can give him all he needs.

He would like to have easy to handle, cheap list, with Z95 if possible :-)

Also the list could be build from the cards included in the set...

Any suggestions, ideas?

You don't start with Z95. You build a squad and if you have 12/24/36 points left to spend, you include 1/2/3 Z95. Done!

8 Zs! 4 Talas, 4 bandits.

Well, I came with this:

======= ZYT2400 ======= 100 points Pilots

------

Airen Cracken (25) Z-95 Headhunter (19), Swarm Tactics (2), Shield Upgrade (4)

Lieutenant Blount (22) Z-95 Headhunter (17), Assault Missiles (5)

“Leebo” (53) YT-2400 Freighter (34), Determination (1), Heavy Laser Cannon (7), Lando Calrissian (3), Outrider (5), Hull Upgrade (3)

------

Its based upon the cards in the expansions set, with some small amount of additions... But I have a lot of those on mine and happily change them for Lone Wolf fron the YT :-)

8 Zs! 4 Talas, 4 bandits.

Its not ease to handly, nor cheap :-)

Something I'd like to try come Wave 8 (but also not cheap):

Lieutenant Blount (17)
Veteran Instincts (1)
XX-23 S-Thread Tracers (1)
Bandit Squadron Pilot (12)
Concussion Missiles (4)
Guidance Chips (0)
Bandit Squadron Pilot (12)
Concussion Missiles (4)
Guidance Chips (0)
Bandit Squadron Pilot (12)
Concussion Missiles (4)
Guidance Chips (0)
Bandit Squadron Pilot (12)
Concussion Missiles (4)
Guidance Chips (0)
Bandit Squadron Pilot (12)
Concussion Missiles (4)
Guidance Chips (0)
Total: 99

Munitions Failsafe (1)

Marksmanship (3)

Proton Torpedoes (4)

•R2-F2 (3)

T-70 X-Wing: •Poe Dameron (41)

Munitions Failsafe (1)

Wired (1)

Proton Torpedoes (4)

•R2-D2 (4)

Z-95 Headhunter: •Lieutenant Blount (20)

Ion Pulse Missiles (3)

Total: 100/100

Certainly not the cheapest solution, but if you want to "Start with Z's" you can always Zedaggedon It!

6 x Binayre Pirate with Concussion Missiles and Guidance Chips

If you don't like your dice chances, feel free to change to something else. Again, not cheap, but you'll be rolling a lot of red dice... lot of red dice...

Get the Bandits so your PS 2 and can still shoot the same time against other swarms.

Hmm... Yeah... there's that too... heh... guess I've been in a Wretched Hive too long...

B's and Z 's go together well for a good beginner list. But honestly if I were to give advice to your friend I would tell him to get a YT-1300. Money wise it is the best ship in the game IMO. It is also pretty forgiving for new players, not to mention about as iconicly star wars as you can get.

If he is trying to play on a budget and not in tournaments, I would just take a piece of paper and write C3PO on it rather than suggest he buy the Tantive, just to get that card.

A Falcon and 3 Zs is a great solid list.

That kind of list won world's a couple years ago, didn't it?

If you're insisting on Z-95 Headhunters, try this on for size once Wave 8 hits

Lt. Blount

+ XX23 S-Thread Tracers

+ Veteran's Instincts

5x Bandit Squadron Pilots

+ Concussion Missiles

+ Guidance Chips

99 points

Expected damage? Astronomic, for the first round of fire.

Remove their best ship from the board, and then look hungrily at the rest of 'em

The only thing I don't like about XX23 S-Thread Tracers is that you are all locked onto a single target. Which is great if it is a Decimator or Dash, but not so great if you hit a generic swarm list of some kind. In Epic? Oh, heck yeah! Give me Tracers with a list like this!!!

Note: The above Alpha-Strike? A damage expectation of 19.7265625.

You deal less than the full 20 damage only 27% of the time, pre-cancelation.

NOTHING in the game can survive that onslaught, and its not like you'll send good missiles after bad in that instance.

You'll be focused and target-locked, so once you get 'em down to where you can lethal 'em with primaries, go for it.

One of them, yes. There are a few variations.

I also don't consider the Z-95 a ship to use in a "cheap" squadron. Maybe as the last piece of fill but to build around it requires larger numbers which in turn increases the real world cost of the squadron because you are using the cheapest rebel ship to build with.

Guidance chips works only when your primmary weapon value is 3 or higher :)

For a crit yep... but for a Zero point option to make ordnance hit harder, I'll take a free hit as well. Just not that picky if I'm going for a missile swarm...

For primary value 2 or lower, you change to a Hit

For primary value 3 or higher, you change to your choice of a Hit or a Crit.

Works better with a primary 3 or higher (as noted already)

On topic though: you could form a squad "around" a Z-95 if it's one of the named ones. As suggested above, Lt. Blount like effect missiles (IonPulse, Assault, ThreadTracers, etc.), but also consider the free actions that Cracken can give during the combat phase. a swarm is hard to start with, so I would suggest Cracken with two other aces, it's a decent combo.

Overall though, I think you've gotten the message that Z's are typically used as filler rather than the main course.

30-40 point Ace (Wedge, Tycho, Poe, etc)

2 filler ships in the low 20s cost range (X-wing, B-wing, Y-wing with turret, etc)
