I dub thee, no you may not

By Keffisch, in X-Wing Squad Lists

A little troll list for tonight's casual game:

Zertik Strom — TIE Advanced 26
Sensor Jammer 0
TIE/x1 0
Ship Total: 26

"Dark Curse" — TIE Fighter 16
Ship Total: 16

Carnor Jax — TIE Interceptor 26
Veteran Instincts 1
Autothrusters 2
Hull Upgrade 3
Royal Guard TIE 0
Ship Total: 32

"Omega Leader" — TIE/fo Fighter 21
Juke 2
Comm Relay 3
Ship Total: 26

Yeah. This has come up a few times before. Its the sort of list that doesn't make any friends. Hopefully you aren't springing it on any newer players!

I'm on a tablet or I'd throw out some links, but I'm sure you can search if you are interested in variations...

No worries, the guys I am playing against are used to worse things. :)

Looks like a lot of fun to play, but how difficult is it to fly well???

Fairly difficult, but not impossible

what would be some squads that would help a newish player learn to fly better?

Well, I'm a 'throw em off the deep end' kind of guy, so my suggestion would be to not worry how hard the list is. The harder it is, the more you learn (although it can be a long string of losses as you go through the ugly process----depends though on the relative skill levels of your opponents).

I've always found TIE swarm a good starting point. Its hard to fly well (because you have so many ships), but you are less crippled by mistakes (because you have so many ships) and you can capitalize on opponent mistakes (because you have so many ships).

Of course, starting out you probably don't have enough ships for it...

Interceptors are good too, but can be much more frustrating when you screw up because you typically lose even from the smallest mis-judgments...

makes sense about that... 'throw em off the deep end'

blade_mercurial is suggesting (I think) the 8 x TIE Fighter Swarm (Academy Pilots). And it is a heck of a way to learn to fly if you can afford to get 8 of those little monsters and have a steady enough hand to move them for enough rounds to demolish your opponent... practice moving them in a large group first... through asteroids... and just realize it will only be worse when you are playing someone. Lots and lots of little plinky red dice. Walls of green dice.

I have enough ships to do 4 obsidian and 4 academy. If I use 4 normal tie models and 4 tie/fo models (that would be considered ok?)

Not in a tournament, no. But in casual games, sure, use whatever you want (unless your opponent takes offense, I guess...)

Ok. Well I know that I could use hem in a casual match. Will have the motive it a try or 2
