Seems like, "What's Better?" Well Rounded or Shock and Awe.

Second fleet is scary to see across the table. First fleet seems like a good "take all comers" with less glaring weakness, but no build in overpowering strength.

Which is better/more fun/more competitive?

7 point initiative bid on the first list as well. (more toolboxy)

No initiative bid on the 2nd list.

.................

Also, flagships are fouled up.

Frigate is Flagship in the first list.

Frigate with Flight Controlers and Expanded Hangers is flagship in second.

Both Fleets seem VERY strong.

As an Imperial I'm not sure I'd like to see either. Its tough to choose because I think overall I'd rather play with the well rounded fleet since you don't know what you'll face.

But you could roll the dice and wander in with that amazing mass of Ys. Holy crap that would be tough to deal with.

The second list is the meaner list for a tourney. It's only chance to be defeated is for your opponent to kill your ships before that bomber ball kills all his squadrons.

If I faced it, I'd send my squadrons in to tie up the ball, then hammer a ship down, then avoid you. Can't see any other way to reliably beat it.

I'd also drop Flight Controllers and Expanded Hangar's in favor of Ruthless Strat's and Boosted Comms on the third AF. In for a penny, in for a pound as they say.

I've played that second list, and I think it's one of those that's only good on paper as it stands. I had a really hard time ever getting those RS shots off, because it's so easy to avoid them.

I think if you play it very offensively with the AF2's, keeping the Y's in (medium-1) range to force interceptors to fly into your RS range if they want to attack the Y's, it would probably work pretty well.

I'd probably swap out 5 Y-wings for 4 A-wings and a bid of 6 in that list if it were me (unfortunately it leaves you one point short of being able to upgrade the HWK to Jan). Flight Controllers on 4 A-wings will basically guarantee you an alpha strike on the named lynchpin squadron of your choice (Dengar/Jan/Rhymer) if you play it right; otherwise you can use them to soften up several targets for RS to mop up afterward. And you're not losing much in anti-ship capability if you use the A-wings to soften up shields before pouring on the fire with the Y's. You even keep the same deployment advantage, since you were at an odd number of squadrons before.

@Ardaedhel

That was one of the things I was aware of when building this list...the limited range of the RS's.

The Flight Controllers are actually the quick and dirty answer to that...despite every suggestion to improve the list by replacing that single controller with another RS. A decent idea, but a little over-simplistic. (with respect to Englishpete) It reduces the small bit of toolboxy feel that the list has. Flight controllers and the Expanded hangers give you just that little touch of versatility. Not to mention, you need Expanded Hangers to guarantee a single round of complete commands across your entire fighter wing.

When you maneuver your fighters, with the ships, you keep them close and like you said, if they want to attack the ball, they fly into your range. If they wait too long, or hold back to far, you can either pounce on a crucial ship...destroying it, or jump the cowardly fighters as they allow you to get into range. (condsidering that Rebel fighters are not quite as fast as Imperials) Flight Controllers make for the heavier hits from the Y's and there are enough fighters in the list to give you 31 blue anti-squad dice if they delay too long in attacking you. If Character Squadrons are en masse, you don't really care b/c Brace/Scatter are nigh useless against a single pitiful Y attack...even WITH flight controllers.

After you jump, because your opponent was too scared to engage, you have to make sure at least 1 RS is within range of the scrum so you can tip the scales of battle. OR just flat out clean up.

3 RS is just too much on the medium size bases to be effective. You might be a bully on the table, but you still have to fly like a Rebel. Cautiously and on an oblique angle. 3 RS's might work in an "in yer faise" Imperial list with Squadrons, I dunno. However, Rebs are just too cautious of a fleet to fly like that. Frigates are strong, but these have no defensive upgrades.

Good input though guys, thanks to ya!

Did you actually buy six rebel squadron packs? If I did I'd run that second list just because I could.

Also, running the imp aces, the one vanilla list I really worry about is Jan and bunches of xwings. Jan and 6-8 xwings would be SO painful to chew through.

I'm too obsessed with my gaming.

I do indeed have everything needed to run either list w/o borrowing.

Sad, my family may eat Ramen, but I've got my spaceships.
