just picked the game up, sorry if this is a repeat question.
if attackers str reduced to zero with an effect does "combat" still occur? ie- does free company still discard a card at random from opponent even if there is no damage?

Hi, again!
There are some issues, now, about combat timing and other stuff...
What I'll wrot is JUST the way I'd rule it, using some "wisdom" (assuming I have some ).
Let's think about Combat Steps:
Step 1: declare Zone
Step 2: declare attackers
Step 3: declare defenders
Step 4: assign damage
Step 5: apply damage.
Now, in your example, you destroy (doesn't matter the way you do it now) the attacker.
That's how I'd rule it: it depends on the moment in which you destroy it.
If you destroy the attacker between Step 2 and 3, nothing happens with Scout, cause the "scout" Unit didn't defend, thus, never been takin' part to the combat.
If you destroy it AFTER Step 3, Scout triggers. As a side note, I'd add that point, I'd say that combat ends with no result (THERE'S NO RULE ABOUT IT, but if you have to take a decision during a game, when there are no attackers, the combat ends immediately).
Sithlord, good to see you and welcome to the game.
DB - I think Sithlord is actually asking a different question than what you were answering. strength = power icons in this context not hit points. so the question he is asking is if I remove all the hammers from your participating unit with the Scout keyword would its ability still trigger...
The answer is yes. If it survies combat (defined as the 5 steps on page 12 of the rule book and written above by DB), in otherwords making it through the assigning of damage it causes a random card discard. It does not have to have any power nor do any damage it simply must survive. Combat is ongoing and passes through all five steps unless all participating units (attack and defense) are removed combat, and as of right now the only way to do that is to remove them from play.
DB - Your answer isn't quite right. The rules state it must survive the application of damage, which means it must make it out the other side of step 5, not step 3 which is the declaration of defenders. If no defenders are declared and the attacking unit with the Scout keyword has no power, players may try to shortcut to step 5 immediately, but technically we still pass through every step, and it is important to do so, because each offers both players a chance to take actions, which right now may include raising the power back to a positive number to cause damage, or playing the cards in hand before they can be forced to be discarded .
OMG, believe me...I wanted to answer but while developing the post forgot to get to the original point...I remember clearly that I had the intention to point out something about the timing, then I forgot the REAL TOPIC...
Thanks for ansering, DORM, anyway, and SORRY, OP.
About the second point.
What I tried to explain was excactly your last pointing out... (just to be clear).
When I said: "...AFTER STEP 3 SCOUT TRIGGERS..." didn't meant that scout triggers at that point...I used the example just to say: "Scout triggers if partecipating and after step 3 means "he has the time to declared" and will be partecipating...
Otherwise, I would not mention the 5 steps scheme
No problems, anyway.
SITHLORD: enjoy!
