Triple Starvipers

By bwingstrike, in X-Wing Squad Lists

So with some upcoming store championships I've decided that using a triple StarViper squad would be fun.

I have 2 similar lists, but am unsure which would be the better one.

List 1

Xizor - Veteran Instincts, Virago, FCS & Autothrusters - 37

Guri - Predator & Autothrusters - 35

Black Sun Enforcer - Autothrusters -27

Total - 99 Points

So this gives me a 1 point bid for initiative and good old Predator to help Guri's red dice. A PS1 ship tho, so vulnerable to Predator and shooting after TLT's etc.

List 2

Xizor - Veteran Instincts, Virago, FCS & Autothrusters - 37

Guri - Lone Wolf & Autothrusters - 34

Black Sun Vigo - Autothrusters -29

Total - 100 Points

This trades Predator for Lone Wolf and the PS1 now becomes PS3. So all my ships can now dance around PS2 ships, but I have no initiative bid and Lone Wolf will require more attention to Guri's positioning.

So any thoughts or maybe suggestions for another ship to replace the generic?

Guri and Xizor in one list sucks. Why? Cause u have only 1 Virago. Named and generic? More likely. My buddy played Guri+generic+2xZ95 last store he had a lots of fun with that.

I agree that the Virago limitation puts a damper, inertially, on the scummiest dynamic duo (see what I did there? HA! my pun for the day...)

Anyway, its not impossible:

Xizor w/ VI, virago, FCS, autos = 37

Guri w/ predator & autos = 35

Enforcer w/ autos = 27

99

Not great though, because PS9 Xizor wants a better bid than that...

Guri w/ lone wolf, virago, sensor jammer & autos = 39

Xizor w/ predator & autos = 36

Enforcer = 25

100

Also not great because no autos for the Enforcer :(

Another problem with throwing Xizor into a triple viper list is you don't really want to use his ability because passing damage to another viper is not ideal (although spreading damage around can be a good thing). Its also not going to come up much though since to fly Vipers well, you definitely need to spread out and avoid formation flying, so Xizor's ability is unlikely to come up often.

For that reason, my triple Viper list is Guri and a pair of Enforcers:

Guri w/ push the limit, virago, advanced sensors, autothrusters & flechette torps = 41

2 Enforcers w/ autos & flechette torps = 29 x 2

99

I really like this list and although I haven't had a chance to use it much, I expect it will do well. The flechette torps are key. You see, the biggest weakness is higher PS aces. Turrets are laughable thanks to autothrusters and the ability to boost/barrel roll. Swarm lists are manageable because the enforcers block to deny actions/shots and once you thin the ranks a bit, Guri can clean up the rest even if you lose both generic vipers. So to deal with the high Pilot Skill aces, you need stress to shut down their shenanigans. PS 10 Poe loves to focus, well not if he has to suck on a pair of stress tokens. Soontir only takes 1 flechette torpedo to end him (since he can't afford NOT to use PTL he will be double stressed and killed the following turn). IG88s can also be affected by flechette torps, and if you can trade one viper for one IG, you have a very winnable scenario...

I think List 1 or 2 works (but probably 1 moreso), but I think you should increase your Initiative bid by dropping Autothrusters on the lowest PS Starviper. So maybe it becomes the first target for enemy ships? Good! You don't want them shooting at the other two, because they're doing more damage than the Vigo or Enforcer anyway. I wouldn't worry about TLTs too much regarding the PS of the Enforcer in List 1. Xizor and Guri should just wreck TLTs by themselves, so I doubt PS1 vs 3 on your support ship is too worrisome.

In regards to Lone Wolf on Guri, I'd look at it more as an insurance policy. Say some bad stuff happens and Xizor ends up dying, Guri becomes stronger. Ideally, though Xizor is the last to die, as he's pawning off hits onto other people anyway.

Thanks for the feedback. I now have some things to think about. Xizor is mainly there as a PS9 to help deal with Fel's etc, not so much for his ability.

I may have to gice the flechette Torpedoes a try.

Dont want to break your bubble...but fel gonna tear xizor to shreds even with xizor shooting first:P

Assuming its down to mano a mano, its true a fully turtled baron set to joust could lay a hurting on xizor. However once hes locked into his 2s which he will be if not already (highly likely) then xizor has a definite advantage moving last. The more likely scenario is that it goes to time.

I think you misunderstand. PS9 Xizor does not want to shoot first. He wants an initiative bid so he can GIVE IT AWAY. Then Fel has to move first and Xizor can re-position accordingly and get a shot. And Xizor with FCS hits harder than Fel. You also neglected to notice the flechette torpedoes...
