Zabuzauz's Repaints

By Zabuzauz, in X-Wing

Warning: Large Images Ahead

I started into X-Wing early 2015 and immediately fell in love with every aspect of the game, especially the miniatures! A few months after starting I attempted my first repaint and have been hooked ever since. Getting painting time in is difficult with my schooling/internship taking up a lot of my time, but I will be trying to get as much painting done as reasonably possible.

I'm going to update this post with group photos of my factions of repaints as I complete new pieces. Each individual piece will get its own post. (You guys know the deal)

I'm new so all pointers, comments, concerns, philosophical rebuttals, and snide remarks are welcome!

T-65 X-wing

My first repaint! This one was done a while ago, last March I believe. This is the first model I've ever tried painting, and I really loved it. Looking back I feel like I've improved already since then. I feel the future holds promise.

The story behind the color scheme is this: I asked my roommate and good friend what colors I should use to paint Rebel ships (I am a primarily Imperial player). He suggested dark grey with red and yellow as secondary colors. I used this poor broken X-wing as the guinea pig to get comfortable painting. The next repaint I did was a Y-wing (his favorite) in his suggested colors for his birthday. Alas, I have no pictures of it. I will try and snag some when I get a chance!

VT-49 Decimator

This is technically my third repaint. I did not realize going into this how much more effort goes into painting something this big. My main reason for painting the Decimator was so that I could test out the color palate that I plan on using for my entire Imperial fleet. There are a few details I'd like to add yet (white to the engine glow, green to the laser tips) but it's essentially done. I can guarantee you the Decimator won't be lonely for long. ;)

Kihraxz Fighter

My fourth repaint, the Kihraxz Fighter! I never really planned on buying one, but was gifted one by a friend. When I learned my X-Wing buddies were starting a Heroes of the Aturi Cluster campaign, I decided I would check it out. They had rules allowing for Scum, so I though it was a perfect time to try out the Kihraxz. I learned the hard way that if you try to fly a AG2 ship like a TIE you're going to have a bad time. Overall I had fun but I realized how much I disliked the standard paint scheme. I wanted to change it, but I didn't care to do too much work. This repaint is plain, but I'm fond of its simplicity.

Nice work! Lovin' that Kihraxz!

Really good! I will give a pointer on the x-wing. When doing yellows, consider a layer or two of white and then build up the yellow, makes it brighter, sharper.

I have nothing but trouble with applying yellow. I will definitely try that. Thanks for the tip!

Yeah I hate trying to paint Imperial fists - this said, for those i build up from brown, as i want a dirtier, grittier look.

My Raptors (chapter) have orangy-yellow eyes, and that's done by using cream (bleached bone, or kommando khaki - or what their current equivalents are) and then shading with I think bloodletter. It was a very pale yellow though but looks good for what I wanted to do. For stripes you probably want brighter, more intense so yeah. Trust me on the white.
