Screed and Overload Pulse vs Evade

By stackeffect, in Star Wars: Armada

If Screed modifies a dice to a crit in order to activate overload pulse, he would do so before the defender spends defense tokens. If the defender has an evade token, it could cancel or require a reroll of the dice Screed just modified.

Is that correct?

Correct.

Yes, I think this is correct. Screed's modify dice ability would come under the "Modify Dice" step, which is in step 3 of the Attack steps.

The "Spend Defense tokens" is under step 4 so therefore Screed could modify the dice only for the defender to cancel it or reroll it if it has an evade token.

Like others have said, that is correct. In my experience, that's why MonMotha is such a beast against a Screed+Gladiator swarm. All of a sudden, you can't guarantee that delicious ACM, even at close range.

Yes - that definitely hamstrings Screed's ability.

Thanks for the clarification, all. I'm playing with him in an hour, and the timing makes a huge difference on how I'll set up my ships and attacks.

Just remember, if you're at Close Range they cannot use Evade tokens, so get to knife fighting range! Unless they're told to Evade by Mon Mothma...

This. Screed is usually a guaranteed crit once per activation. Except if Mothma is there, in which case he's not...

Unless you roll one crit and use Screed to add a second. Then he is again. :D

If you're looking at Black critical effects rather than Blue, then Ordnance Experts is actually a great upgrade in conjunction with Admiral Screed. I used to snub it, on the grounds that I'm already getting dice modification with Screed, why spend four more points on it? However, if you have a four-black-dice attack, being able to reroll anything that isn't a Hit/Crit, and then being able to guarantee one regardless, can lead to some juicy damage totals...

Or they are Admonition

Or foresight

Or foresight

I am trying to figure out how the evade of foresight could be work at close range (without Mothma of course).

Yeah, I don't think a close range Evade would do anything, unless Mon Motha is in the mix, Foresight or not.

You forgot Foresight and Admonition.

In some ways, this discussion serves as an excellent demonstration of why Ordnance Experts may be superior to Screedence Clearwater Revival if Mon Mothma is a thing.

OE allows you to re-roll all of the blank dice and crit fish with your dice multiple times per activation, which Screed does not. It's something to think about for those who will be facing MM, or who have lists that have trouble with MM lists.

Also, great question, great answers that are clear. I love this community.

Except Screed AND OE can indeed be a thing.

Screed + Ordnance Experts does definitely allow you to aggressively fish for crits and then still be reassured of flipping to one if you don't land one or for when those black blanks turn up. It can get kind of mean. It's also a failsafe for when/if Screed gets blown up to help assure your black crit upgrades can keep firing fairly reliably.
