What are you practicing against for the System Open?

By General Zodd, in X-Wing

Good morning from the sunny(!) UK! I'm heading to work, but thought I would chuck this out there and inspect the responses when I finish this evening.

Me and some friends have got tickets for the Yavin tournament in Birmingham, we've done a couple of local tournaments but this will be in a while different league. We're already thinking about what we might take, and what to practice against. I'm playing Thursday night against my mates beloved Brobots, and he's asked me to bring PTL Dash and Corran, probably with VI with the points available.

So, the question is, what lists are you practising against? I don't want to take a boring cookie-cutter list, but I also don't want to get ROFL-stomped by something I should have prepared better for... What are you expecting to face this Summer? And yes, I know there'll be Wave 8 by then (hopefully...) so all predictions need not caveat themselves!

Oh, and suggestions for a top tier Dash (including PTL) and Corran build so I can properly test my mate's Brobots would be appreciated...

Cheers!

By summer? Tractooor beammmm.

Indeed. You can expect tractor beams and guidance chips to feature, just because they'll be the new thing people have got their hands on.

Nothing! Because they aren't hosting any in Australia (or even Asia for that matter). Curse you FFG and your lousy understanding of 'the world'.

Desperately hoping against hope for Imp Vets to have dropped by then because I have a couple of very nice lists in mind with it. But not expecting anything :(

I'll either be running my current favourite Imperial squad of Soontir/Whisper/Omega Leader or Something With Dengar, but exactly what depends on the things we've not yet seen from wave 8.

But tbh, there will be at least 300 people playing in the tournament, so I'd expect to see a little of everything.

Tractor is also in the .. Mist Hunter? So wave8. Which should be Q1. (Snark). (Q4 2015 we mean right??)

Yeah, I know, but TIE/D & x7, and TIE Shuttle aren't, and those are the bits I'm interested in.

Standard Dash and Corran:

Dash + Kyle + PtL + HLC + Outrider + Engine

Corran + VI + FCS + R2-d2

I myself like:

Dash + Lone Wolf + HLC + Outrider + Anti pursuit lasers

Corran + PtL+ FCS + R2-d2 + Engine

There will be brobots, rebel 3-4 ships builds with stressbot/Poe/Miranda and crackswarms. Don't see yet how wave 8 will affect that.

Could you share your build for The Three Terrors?

Tractor beam might reduce the number of stresshog-centred lists. It's still a **** good ship, but it'll burn down quick if you're rolling half a list's worth of red dice at it, with zero agility; and it's main strength can be nullified if you chuck it onto a rock, so it's maneuver options aren't as strong.

With the rise of the crackshot swarm, I can see chimps making people thing again about something like mass assault missiles. Concussion is definitely going to see play, though.

Don't feel bad Canadians got left out in the cold as well

Ditto Ireland. FFG likes to count us as the UK for the sake of events and many tournaments. <shakes fist eastwards at former colonial oppressors>

Standard Super Soontir, Whisper with VI/FCS/ACD/no crew, OL with Juke and Comm Relay. Fits neatly, but I'd probably replace Whisper with Vader(VI/x1/ATC/Engine Upgrade) if I could afford to £££-wise, which would leave room for a Stealth Device on OL or some crew on Whisper, probably the former.

Depending on where you are in Canada, you might be closer than a lot of people in the US, too! It's a 12 hour drive for me and I'm not even that far (compared to the rest of the country).

Despite there being a lot of places not included in the System Open, I'm surprised there aren't two events in the US. Sure, each event in Europe is a different country, but think about how big the US is and how many players there are here. Don't you think they could've done an east/west coast setup (or even east/central/west)? My guess is they believe a lot of the same people would travel for all the events if there were multiple in the US, but I know there's a lot of people out there who would want a crack at it that simply can' travel that far (and like I said, the rest of the X-Wing community who do not have events near their country).

Personally, I feel that Texas should have it's own Open, because... well, because we're like that... On the other hand, I am glad to see something like this develop where a Worlds type event is happening in more countries. True, it doesn't include all countries, but it is a start. If it does well, I expect there will be other location included in the future. Maybe even wild west places like Australia and Texas!

Palp Aces, Rebel regen and turrets, stresshogs.

I'm not sure yet. It depends on how big a splash wave 8 will make. Otherwise, probably a Tie swarm.

Honestly? I'll just find a squadron that I enjoy using and practise with it as much as I can. I'm not interested in playing the meta, just playing. If that means I go 0/0/6 on Saturday and end up just having fun in the Hangar Bay events on Sunday, I'm good with that.

For Hangar Bay, my lists will almost certainly be some sort of Ghost/Phantom/A-Wing list and a TIE swarm with the Inquisitor, because I like fun themes.

For the main event, I'm tempted to just keep practising with the Xisor/TLT-Y/3xZ-95 list I used in my local store championship. It was really fun to play. We'll see.

Really? I find myself in a very simillar spot and I doubt if I really should even go there. Cause I just fool around with ships I like and pilots I like flying. So I am not sure if I should go to the competition even if I would really like to.

Thanks guys, all on the list for practice. Graeme, I totally understand, I'm not fussed about flying what everyone thinks is good, but I would like to make a decent fist of flying *against* lists I should see coming. Mind you, there are over 350 tickets sold so far for the UK tournament, with that many people flying I expect to see an impressive array of lists! It's not like last year where everyone and their grandma were flying Fat PWT and Ace (Corran or Whisper usually...), which made planning easier, but games more boring!

So, my list of archetypes to practice against so far are;

4 TLT

Palpmobile + 2 Aces

TIE Ace Swarm (6 TIEs including a couple of TIE or TIE/fo characters)

Corran and/or Poe with Stresshog and extras

Rebel Regen (basically the above, but with Miranda instead of Stresshog!)

Brobots

Xizor + mini-swarm

Fat PWT + Ace (just in case they're making a comeback...)

Any others?

Obviously I'll need to play with and against Tractor Beams, but try stopping me doing that when I get the card in my grubby mitts anyway! Without the TIE/D Defender to carry it, I'm not convinced they will be *that* impactful to start with, but I am fully prepared to be proved wrong!

I would add to your idea of Rebel Regen Red Ace+R2D2+Comm Relay

It's probably worth getting some practise against Rebel X-Wing Aces as well, General Zodd. With Integrated Astromech, I think we'll see more of them about, being that bit more survivable. T-70s particularly.

And having just seen the Punishing One preview, we're DEFINITELY going to see a bunch of Boba Fett crew, so squadrons that don't utterly rely on key upgrades are worth considering.

Yep, in fact I'm pleasantly surprised anyone's looking at this thread with the Punishing One preview finally out! Picked a great day to finally start a topic, didn't I... But yes, this is exciting! Hopefully it'll limit one-trick shenanigan lists, but I guess the other way to mitigate is to give Boba far too many tempting targets! ;-)

Anyway, back to the topic, I have flown T-70s a fair amount myself, always loved the T-65, but have been disappointed in their slide into mediocrity. So I think I'm fairly comfortable with them. I'll definitely look at Jiron's suggestion for the Rebel Regen list too, looks tricksy!
