How many hours can a X wing or a TIE Fighter fly ?

By Hexdot, in X-Wing

An Endurance question. I have no idea about this topic. Can a X wing scamble and fly a 18 hours CAP ? And the more simple Tie ? If you can provide a Link to a fiable source, or if you know about a Jane's star wars book... Thanks in advance

One of my friends wanted to do fuel limits (as rounds) in our campaign too. I'd like to know.

Btw, what is CAP?

No Tie has ever lived long enough to discover the limits.

X wings have exactly as much range as their plot demands.

Everything else is just fan fiction.

In Star Wars, spaceships have ionization and nuclear fusion power sources that generate enough power to keep the ship running for weeks (X-Wings, TIEs), years (capital ships), or decades (Katana fleet).

Unless the plot says the opposite during this week's episode. Then they run on liquid fuel that they keep in fuel tanks that can leak, and they need to refill often.

Really, there is no sci-fi background to Star Wars that is consistent at all. Realism is better left aside when talking about the saga. (What do starfighter pilots do with their biological needs when they are stuck on their ships for weeks, by the way?)

The astromech mixes them a gin and tonic. That's not fuel leaking out. Well, it is, but it's for the pilot, not the ship.

I thought it was Combat Air Patrol

There's no toilet in those things. I'm going to say that's the most limiting factor. If it's not, I really pity the maintenance crews...

Lol. Even Su-somethings... 27? su-33? had a toilet, and a kitchen.

I'd say about 12 parsecs ;)

"Kitchen" = minibar.

I thought everyone knew that the integrated astromech recycled the pilots urine?

True fact !

I wondered if those tubes that pilot suits have all over were supposed to... evacuate body fluids and such.

Tie fighter are called short range fighters by Kenobi before they encounter the Death Star. Whether that means they have no hyperdrive or that they have limited fuel for their ion engines is never explained. Personally I think its the hyperdive.

Wasn't ther a TIE fighter scrambling off planet to warn the Republic in the Black Fleet Crisis?

Found him, Plat Mallar

According to Age of Rebellion a TIE/ln carries two days consumables, presumably including breathable air.

It is.

Wiki quotes X-Wings as carrying one week's worth of consumables (assuming no shrivelled goblin wizards steal them, that is). Their main operational limitation in that regard will be being able to actually land/rest.

TIE Fighters? 2 days worth of consumables and a distress beacon (basically a limited survival kit in case of crash landings).

A CAP is a Combat Air Patrol. The fighters are asigned a zone to patrol, and engage enemy crafts in entering that area. It is employed very often as a defensive measure, but there are variants.

In Black Fleet Crisis, the last surviving tie from from a system that was suprise attacked saved his flightcam data, pointed his tie at a "nearby" inhabited system, and set the cruze control basically. It was implied that even though he was almost out of air already, the fighter itself could totally make the trip over decades.

Well yes, but they could do that almost definitely - all it needs is enough tick-over power to make the computer wake up and perform course corrections every so often, momentum would do the rest. The engines could be off most of the time.

Not that Star Wars usually remembers momentum and space being (mostly) frictionless.

An Interceptor. In the Brian Wood Star Wars series, I think it was established that there exist advanced TIE Interceptor models with shields and hyperdrives:

That could explain why Plat Mallar thinks he can get to the Republic.

I wouldn't mind seeing Plat join in the game, his story has enough to get a nice thematic ability.

Aren't they ion engines? Not to attempt to apply logic to star wars, but ion engines work most efficiently when they're in constant acceleration, since they don't actually output a massive amount of power.
