The timing of Wampa's pilot ability

By Beard, in X-Wing

So here's the question. Let's say I make the roll against a target with low agility and no shields left, get one hit one crit. Aighty so I have the choice to cancel the roll and deal a guaranteed crit, or let my opponent roll defence to see if they crit AND hit go through. Let's say I let him roll defence, and he gets 2 evades. Wampa states I may cancel all dice results and the face up dmg card. Is there a specific timing to this? Or could i, after see my opponent actually get the evades, decide to cancel all results and deal the crit directly anyway?

It's the same timing as Crackshot. After all dice are rolled and modified. If they block the crit, you can just cancel your crit to give them a facedown damage card.

Also, for future reference, this is a perfect question for the Rules subforum.

Where we should really pin a Community Service Announcement on this topic, as it seems to come up fairly regularly.

This also seems to be something a lot of people get confused on. Wampa deals a face DOWN damage card, not a face up one.

Well, since the topic is already here I too have a question. The text does NOT read "if you cancel at least one" critical result, it says if you cancel one. So does that mean if you cancel two results, you can deal two cards? I don't see him in the FAQ. If I remember correctly, when a pilot ability would trigger, it only triggers once per trigger, but I can see each separate critical results being a separate trigger, so I'm not sure how to rule it.

No, once per opportunity prevents that. If you cancel a crit, deal a face down damage card. 'At least one' might have been a touch less ambiguous, but per the rules of x-wing it's not needed.

Probably ought to be FAQed anyway though.

He's not in the FAQ yet; they haven't released one with any new info since the Gozanti dropped.

Ooh, dunno how I misread that, thanks for pointing that out before I embarrassed myself in a tournament lol!

why would people get confused about that wampa clearly states face down damage

Because it's a crit result that's causing the damage. It just seems to lodge into a lot of people's brains that the resulting damage must be face up, even when the card says face down.

As someone who misread it, my answer is because I read it too fast. After seeing the words crit and face, I assumed face up. Otherwise it would just be card right? Assign a dmg card? But apparently ffg decided to make wordy abilities and confuse the lower iq ppl ;(
