Just noticed a quirky combo

By DraconPyrothayan, in X-Wing

TIE Advanced Prototype

+TIE V/1 title

+XX-23 S-Thread Tracers

Spam this in your fleet.

Sacrifice one ship's attack to throw out the tracers.

Everyone gets a Target Lock on the defender

Everyone gets a free Evade action

Bloody annoying to take down.

And the question becomes thus: Is gaining a free 2 actions on every TAP in your fleet worth 'losing' one attack?

Huge upside, but also a Huge downside.

Thoughts?

No i don't so, mostly due to how you have to fly: close to everyone.

Also, those things don't hit very hard.

Much rather have Conc and chimps.

If they've got PTL they can trigger it for a boost or barrel roll to get a better shot.

V/1 Title and PTL makes me really sad that getting a TL from Jendon doesn't count as "acquiring" a target lock.

Much rather have Conc and chimps.

That's 2 points more per ship, or 10 points more expensive when spammed to 100 points.

At that point, I'd rather have a Lt. Blount + Bandits drunk-monkey swarm (Concussed Chimps). Same number of missiles, hits way harder with them, and have a slightly better post-alpha burst.

My attempt at the combo is more... frustratingly defensive. The Tracers serve to protect the ships for up to 5 rounds, and in that timespan I've got 3 actions on the rest of my fleet (Target Lock, Evade, and my choice of Focus, BR, or Boost).

And I can add Autothrusters, or buff PS and abilitity...

Only problem is if you had a fleet of them you are only PS2 which doesn't leave a whole lot of ships left to attack you. Your evade token is worthless. Xx-23 are good for high PS ships or if you don't care and are waiting for the next round.

A fair point. Not that many PS 1 ships running around for those Evades to be useful, and the thing doesn't have a Generic with an Elite Talent for Juke or PtL...

(Yet).

Didn't say the combo was any GOOD, just noticed it was quirky.

Would work once, but it's a one trick pony.

I hear you, good sir.

BUT

First, the Conc Chimps version doesn't have to be spammed. Two for instance is a kill zone and a joust blast really not worth taking on head-on.

2. I made a Z ordnance swarm work for me at competitive levels pre-chimps, trust me, having to fly in a big formation like that for the tracers is kind of difficult. Its also one dimensional and you'll find it boring quite soon.

3. Even with Auto and evade, these are not that difficult to take down, and I'm also much more able to simply be in front of your guns, 2 dice TL isn't going to scare me or kill anything fast. Which means I have the impetus and momentum to concentrate fire and take you down one by one.

4. I'm sure you know, but attack and damage are stronger in this game.

also btw, conc chimps does some really good damage.

(That evade token is gravy of course, we both love it)

If you want to buy so many of the same ship for this combo, go ahead.

Ooh I love this! Everyone starts talking about how to run Sienar Test Pilots instead of the usual rambling "inquisitor is good others are bleh"

They are underestimated. I'm gonna run 5 with prockets with title and guidance chips. Use some as blockers and let the rest to deliver a guaranteed 5-hit Procket. Crazy? yes. Impossibly hard? Definitely. But I'm gonna try them anyway. ;)

Have fun with the target locks on your 2 attack dice ships...

Absolutely. I've proxy'd tracers on vader a few times, I can only imagine how effective free evades on everyone would be. Its the timing that is critical. They devalue quickly but are excellent for that initial move into range 3. The one some of us mess up at times by getting too greedy. And nothing says 'bug out' like dropping 4 locks on poe..

Target locks are _powerful_.

V/1 Title and PTL makes me really sad that getting a TL from Jendon doesn't count as "acquiring" a target lock.

Are you sure about that? I'll have to check the FAQ in the morning, but it seems like if Jendon is passing the blue token, it's being acquired by someone.

But I could be wrong. Weird ruling by FFG if I am.

Thoughts?

Why not take 5 title+procket

I think acquiring a Target Lock refers to the action or any other card granting a free Target Lock such as K4.

The V1 title reads After acquiring a Target Lock. Thread Tracers also read friendly ships may acquire a Target Lock.

Jendon reads assign a Target Lock. So I don't think the wording as currently written allows for this combo. Unless he's been FAQed or something. Jendon is the one who acquired the lock and is simply assigning it to someone. Same thing with assigning Focus tokens when, say, Carnor is at Range 1. You still can't use the things, but you can assign it since it's not an action.

When you acquire a target lock, you are free to choose your target unless, like with the trailers or fcs, it specifically adds on the defender.

Jendon and targeting coordinator pass specific tokens, as opposed to Dutch.

This is a far simpler explanation, lulz.

And thaaaaaat's exactly what I'm planning to fly above! 25 guaranteed hits. Now Ghost/Deci have to consider equipping themselves with reinforced deflectors. What I like the best about generic adv protos is that they make great missile platforms. If the missiles have been fired, you're not left with slow but rather agile ships with awesome action economy and green hard turn 1s.

......Oh bloody hell. Yes, if you get a lock for missiles, you get an evade and set off Juke at the same time, don't you.

That's going to hurt a lot. Especially if Baron Of [The Empire?] gets an elite Pilot Talent. It's not impossible given the parallels with the A-wing.
