Lowest Heroes

By lwhitehead, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

Eta and those who live outside of the Order of things must have Heroes, those Men and Women who fight for there right to live and what is good in the world.

The leader of this group is an Eta Sword Saint, he is based of the Japanese Natives who are White skined.

Are you referring to the Ainu?

Yes the Ainu, anyways this Hero of mine who like the Mantis Clan will weld a good strong Clan together.

Erm... sorry, but I'm having trouble following the purpose behind this post. Are you asking for feedback on the storyline?

One thing to consider in this scenario is that Eta can't carry weapons and definitely can't receive any sort of martial training by law . If an Eta is caught with anyo f hte two, then he will get his butt executed for breaking the Celestial Order. If they become Ashigaru, then they will be no longer Eta. If they pull a Toku and become a fake!Ronin, then they will be Ronin and not Eta.

Consequently, I don't think that an Eta hero is possible. A hero born as an Eta, maybe, but he will have to hop into another caste to get even the chance to do something heroic.

Well White Tiger is born Eta, but he was trained later as a Ronin he does not have a Mon but wears clothes that make him the White Tiger his pelt, when he was a boy this child incountered a Tiger while the normal peasants ran for there lives and to find someone with a sword, The boy conviced he was going to be killed glared at the Tiger and the Tiger glared back to the boy. Then blew a large breath on the boy turned and stalked off brushing the boy with his Tail.

When the Yoriks arrived expecting the Eta boy to be dead they were suprised when the boy was still alive and unhurt, his Father thanksed the gods that his boy was alive. His Father was a Butcher/ part time Torcher as well.

The clan he will form will be the Tiger Clan, I hope officially.

The clan he will form will be the Tiger Clan, I hope officially.

The chances of this are approximately zero. You can do what you want with the setting in your own group, but you should be aware that this is about as likely to happen in the official setting as Achilles appearing and giving everyone laser guns and zeppelins.

The scenario is not without canon example. Somethingsomething Monkey Clan. Theoretically , it should be impossible, but provided that the guy has the guts and the luck to pull it through (like how Toku did), then he has a realistic chance to succeed.

Do most play groups never approach the topic of founding your own clan? That was a major feature of the now three year epic campaign that my group has been playing. We founded a new clan with our original characters, through epic heroic play, then moved the story on to the next generation. Now we're playing that next generation, and if I'm reading the GM correctly, we're probably going to see the downfall of this clan as the culmination of this second series.

I would have thought that lots of play groups do this sort of thing. It probably helps that our group has a strong tradition of house-ruling and whole cloth writing of new rules to suit our needs.

It's not primarily the founding of a new Clan that's at issue, here- it's the founding of a new Clan by an eta (who is also an Ainu, who have no equivalent in L5R... except maybe the Nezumi/Trolls/Ogres, inasmuch as they represent fallen members of a race shattered by the new arrivals? But that's clearly not what Whitehead is looking for). The other major difference between this situation and the Monkey is that Toku did his level best to hide the fact that he was not of the samurai caste, until he was well and truly established as a hero of the Empire and a personal friend of the Emperor; the White Tiger, in my reading of Whitehead's scenario, does nothing to conceal his caste and origins, and if anything revels in them. Finally, there seems to be an expectation that it could/will become canon... which is very, very, very, unlikely. Though L5R has traditionally had a player-driven story (and I hope it continues to do so, at least to some extent, under FFG), that is a categorically different thing from 'this one player's idea becomes canon'.

Because I've said it enough times already, I might as well say it again- I have nothing at all against people making these kinds of changes, and playing these kinds of games, in their own group. The more people there are enjoying L5R, the better, and there's no reason their enjoyment should detract from mine or vice versa. That just shouldn't be interpreted as meaning that what one player or group does is appropriate for others, or the setting as a whole.

^I dunno, but I can't see anything you have mentioned. The White Tiger looks like a random Eta who got some sort of spiritual endorsement and thus became a ronin. It looks like he is not in touch with his origins any more other than paying token respect to his birth. Then, he is also destined to found his own Minor Clan, a fairly likely scenario provided that his spiritual backing shows up from time to time. I mean, if you have the spiritual backing, you can get away with unleashing apocalypse on the Empire (I'm looking at you Isawa Tadeka) so a Minor Clan is not a lot to ask as a comparison.

Also, I think English is not Iwhitehead's native language, so when he said " The clan he will form will be the Tiger Clan, I hope officially." he meant " The clan he will form will be the Tiger Clan, I hope my GM will be cool with this."
