Applied Perspective and Corseceng.com

I love my Applied Perspective ruler.

Applied perspective only has the standard ruler. Looking for the smaller ones for moving squads and checking range

Looks like they make nice looking stuff, too. $134CND later....

I will post a new thread when it gets here with my thoughts if anyone is interested

These guys seem to have the full range of rulers available:

No, that's OK, I didn't need that money for food or mortgage, thanks...lol

At first glance, I want to say "****, that's expensive." But forty bucks for a complete set of ship and fighter rulers of every single range increment? That's pretty good! Most replacement range rulers are right around ten bucks, and that's just to replace the cardboard one from the starter set.

It's as if my monies suddenly cried out in terror, and were suddenly silenced. . .

Yeah, that's why I jumped on these. The designs look great for the command tokens and the prices for the ruler sets were also pretty **** competitive.

I picked up 10 of each command token, a set of corners, range 1, 2, 3 and 4 ruler set and short, short-medium ruler set, with shipping to Canada it came out to like 90 USD. I've actually been on the lookout for short rulers but the currency exchange and shipping on the UK stuff was daunting and the USD pricing at other places was just a bit too much to stomach. This one seems to have neat designs and very reasonable pricing, quality of the finished product is going to be interesting to see...

Important to note that many of the products on that site are pre-painted while I think Cog o two and some other providers ship masked but not painted

With those Cog'o'two squadron rulers, the ends look curved. Are they built so that you actually put the ruler against the base, then move the far side of the base to position against the far side of the ruler? In other words, did they shorten the ruler by the width of the base, so you move it from end-to-end?

And yeah, the recreator studios being painted is nice. All of my old paints are dried out, so not having to buy more to paint tokens would be a welcome thing.

That's a good question, actually, especially since it is a very rare time when you can lay a ruler flat and move a squadron. My understanding is that if your squadron speed is X you can move it to within the 1-3 space in the ruler not to the edge outside the 3 space. This would mean that the cogotwo ruler would have to bite a full base out of the length of the ruler making them useless to measure distance.

hey have squadron rulers and distance rulers I believe just for that purpose.

Hmm. I can't get behind the idea of having so many rulers for the same thing. Also starts monkeying with the "one tool" rule a little too much, I don't mind short rulers but if you move with the curved one one turn and within the radius with the range tool the next...

me no likey

I have the cog'o'two fighter rulers and I can confirm that they're curved at each end such that if you place one end on the fighter base, you could move the fighter it's maximum distance by placing it in the curve of the opposite end. That does make them useless for measuring the actual distance. For example, during the set up phase, I have to use a standard range ruler in order to measure out range 3 from the edge. Small bummer considering how nice it is to be able to know the exact maximum distance I can place the fighter during play. After I determine my squad for a game, I just grab the rulers that match the speed of the fighters and bring those to the table, I don't ever take the other sizes because they never need be used.

That recreator studios stuff looks nice.

I will say that I really like the design, where they put the fighters that move at that max speed on the ruler.

Thanks for the review! Always good to have that information.

During the setup phase: If you put the centre line of the rule against the base of the ship and then place the squadron down, you'll be within distance 2. Even if you are off that 1-2mm extra gained will not be the end of life as we know it. I don't think the error would be any worse than the parallax created when you hold the measurement tool off the table above the ship and look down.

I made my own from balsa dowel just the day before I learned of an ordered these. My friend was really having a hard time moving his Tie Fighters, he was shaking, and holding the tool above the fighters already on the table and moving about distance 6. So for me the error will be forgivable.

I have a question concerning the use of the smaller ruler. Will it be problematic to use them in tournaments, could they give an unfair advantage due to the precision of the single increments over the long multi increment ruler?

Technically I don't think they are legal, because my understanding is that only properly sized rulers are legal.

Even if that is the case, these are a huge boon, and I've never ever seen anyone react poorly to them, especially distance 1, or close range rulers. They speed up the game, and help verify distances a lot.

I agree, and I would not have problems using the short rulers in a casual game, but I could see some people taking issue with their use in a tournament.

The Tournament Rules cover these.

Essentially (without Quoting them directly, which I'll do in a moment) - the Rule is, if there's a Discrepency between Rules, because of the way the cardboard is, or someone is using acrylic, etc, etc, etc - then a Player can request that only ONE tool is used by BOTH players - Essentially Shared.

So if someone brings their fancy acrylics that aren't 100% identical to anyone elses, expect to either:

a) Not be able to use them at all.

or

b) Have to Share them with your Opponent.

Anything else, including the selfish "But they're mine, use your own." Exposes you to Tournament Sanctions at the TO's discretion.

EDIT:

And the Rules Quote:

FFG Tournament Rules, Page 6:

RANGE RULERS

Minor variations in the printing process and the existence of third-party products may cause slight disparities in the measurements of some range rulers.

Before a tournament match begins, any player may request that a single range ruler be shared for the duration of the match.

The head judge is the final authority in any decision.
