Cloaking & Maneuver Dials

By AncientestOne, in X-Wing Rules Questions

How are people still missing this FAQ?

People who post in the rules forum often can't find the FAQ, because its tucked away in an obscure corner of the site, and they might not be aware that it even exists.

We're here to teach, not admonish.

If it's particularly frustrating, maybe add a link to your profile signature, so that it's available to anyone who reads one of your posts!

It doesn't help that a search for "xwing rules" doesn't list the FAQ on the first page. Instead, the top hits are for PDF versions of the rules that came with the core set. If I search for "xwing faq" I see a link to a PDF that is the FAQ from March of 2015.

Rules and upgrade cards changing with some frequency and require staying on top of may be an unfamiliar concept to someone new to games like X-Wing.

I think there needs to be clarification from the OP.

1) Is the movement being referred to actually him decloaking? This would be either a 2 straight or 2 barrel roll, which occurs before anyone reveals a dial.

OR

2) Did he take movements when his turn to reveal his dial came - while the ship was cloaked and not show his dial? This would include any bank, turn, or straight maneuver available to the Phantom.

I can see where a decloak "move" might be confused for actual ship movement to someone not familiar with it.

Sorry if there was confusion, let me clarify. Whisper was cloaked and when it was time to move the Phantom, the owning player set down a template and moved the model. When I asked to see the dial, I was told that he didn't have to reveal the dial face until the Phantom De-cloaked. As the Phantom was still cloaked, no dial was revealed. Being unfamiliar with the cloak rules, I assumed (foolishly it seems) that he was being truthful.

Which was blatantly wrong.

Nowhere in the rules does it say to do this.

The invisibility of the Phantom under cloak is shown in its ease of evade (+2 agility) and its revelation of actual position when decloaking (i.e. a 2 template away from where you thought it was).

Giving it a free Navigator + Stay on Target without stress is just... way more overpowered than even the pre-nerf cloaking rules.

Yep. Spend the token, make the mandatory decloak maneuver, THEN immediately reveal your dial.

nope, FAQd long ago.

How are people still missing this FAQ? Do they even check the rules for updates?

I actually check this forum for rule clarification. I did have a quick search for the FAQ yesterday, because it's MENTIONED often enough, but didn't find it with a quick, cursory search.

NEXT TIME, just ask him to show you in the rules where it says you don't reveal a dial if you're cloaked.

While I do not always appreciate that type of statement when something so clearly goes against how everything else works it is very valid.

I appreciate where you're coming from but this is pretty much my standard comeback for when some dude is just making stuff up. And unfortunately I've had to deal with this sort of player more often than I would like.

I always have the same issue. Googling x-wing faq usually nets old faq docs which is pretty frustrated. Ive learned to instead google x-wing useful links which will return first a very help thread on these forums that MajorJuggler keeps up-to-date.

I'm sorry, but I don't understand how people can have trouble finding the FAQ and Errata. It is very clearly marked on the X-Wing Product page at the FFG site.

https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/products/x-wing/

Not everyone gets here from that page though mate. Hell, I found the forum through googling "ffg xwing rules". ;) I've found the FAQ, after making a concerted effort to actually look for it. It's now bookmarked.

Just because it's readily apparent to you, doesn't make it so for everyone else.

I'm glad I've found it though, a lot has changed since my purchases.

I don't think it has anything to with it being apparent to certain individuals; rather it's about logic and a common sense approach to seeking out information.

I have a product I've questions about. Where is the first place on the Internet I should look to see if my questions have been answered? Surely the product's official website is the obvious place to start?

Shrug, already said how I got here. And it's only through here I even became aware of the existence of a FAQ, and the need to reference it.

Don't worry about it. There's a lot of guys here that will tell you to "just read the FAQ", and if you weren't even aware of it's existence, then you're not to blame. I think everyone here has had to ask about it in their early days. We've all been there.

The good thing is, now you know of it, and can read through and learn from it and hopefully it will benefit you in upcoming games as you'll have a much better understanding of how some of the trickier bits of this game work. :)

This is a pretty clear SEO failure on FFG's part.

Already printed in A5 booklet form for friday nights next matchup.

Forgive my ignorance, but what is SEO?

Not immediately - you decloak at the start of activation phase, but reveal the dial when it's your turn to move.

EDIT: wow, way to miss further pages of the topic...

Happens to everyone from time to time.

Of course that IS how it worked when the Phantom first came out so it's not entirely inaccurate. It's just not up to date with the current rules. That also happens to everyone from time to time although usually it will be some little rule change affecting some corner condition that is rarely important instead of completely changing how something is played; the rule changes that radically alter play usually get a lot of notice on the forum although without that notice they can also be missed.

I'm glad I printed out that FAQ, three completely separate questions from my match partner came up that were directly answered in a clear and concise fashion in the latest FAQ last night.

Latest version is always on my phone for that very reason.

Even better idea.
