Focus or Evade?

By General Mayhem, in X-Wing

I was just wondering what the consensus would be on this question.

If I have Palob within range 2 of a ship with dual focus and evade tokens ala Soontir or Vader, which one would I take off? I do have the Moldy Crow title on Palob, but this is an action denial. not for an advantage to Palob either way. I am leaning toward taking a focus off because it could affect both attack and defense, but an evade is a guaranteed 1 evade. Thanks.

I think I'd have to pull the focus, mostly because of what you said, but also because with a good roll, it's much more dangerous than a single evade token.

I think it depends on who might be shooting at you and who you might be shooting back at. If I think Palob is gonna shot at once, possibly by a three dice attack, I'll take the Evade and hedge my bets he can juke away from three hits. On the same side, if it's a two dice defense ship with an Evade, I'll take the Evade away and gamble that my attacks will pump out at least three hits and at least one is guaranteed to go through (maybe more).

But three or more defense dice? I'll happily that that Focus away and hope for some fickle greens to show up. Same if it takes away the only attack modification for someone with a good shot at one of my ships.

And obviously you take the Focus if you need to mod your own attacks, or if you're rolling with the Moldy Crow and the ship you're stealing from is otherwise doing nothing that turn.

I usually grab an evade because Palob can't take that action himself and I normally have a few focuses kicking around in my Moldy Crow and everyone is trying to shoot Palob.

If Palob is out of their arcs I think the choice would really come down to what the rest of the board looked like at the time. If I'm more interested in avoiding damage I'd steal the the focus and if I'm more interested in dealing damage I'd steal the evade.

The focus usually. Especially if you're getting shot at and they only have one.

If they have 2 focus and an evade, you might as well take the evade away, since they'd otherwise have one focus left for whatever they value more.

If I've got Soontir and I'm going to be able to trigger Autothrusters, I usually think a focus action is more valuable. (Since if you roll only focuses AT doesn't help) If he's double stacked like that, taking a focus away means he'll have a harder choice of whether or not to use it on offense.

If he's in arc, though, I'd take the evade.

Focus gets my vote too.

Depends on the range of my other ships, but if the Baron is at R1 or R2 of most of my ships, then I'd steal the Evade, because that potentially forces him to use a Focus on offense, thus leaving him with just a single Focus token for defense.

Depends on the number of defence dice. 3+ dice, focus is worth more. 2 or fewer, evade is worth more.

I asked something similar to this a while ago, and someone commented with a Major Juggler article from the other Forum.

Basically, with 3 agility, the Evade is superior if you're only going to be facing 1 attack. Over 2 or more, the ability for the Focus to dodge more than 1 damage slightly outweighs its ability to whiff (as the whiffery potentiality shrinks with each attack you'll be suffering).

Also considering that the Focus is better on offense as well, and there's your answer.

(Note: for 0-4 agility, the number of attacks necessary for Focus to outstrip Evade are: Infinite, Infinite, 4, 2, and 1 respectively. 0-1 Agi never see the Focus being superior, and at 4+, Focus is superior on even the one attack.)

If you want to roll a lot of guaranteed eyeballs, taking an evade is the way to go about it.

Not that I'm bitter about a few rolls or anything.

Team Covenant, whose name escaped me when I commented earlier.

The "other" forum used to be really good... we just hope they will eventually bring it back to shades of its former glory before the "upgrade".

I just want to thank everyone for their stellar opinions and reasons You have given me a lot to ponder over. Thanks again.

Focus... the evades are nice for ships that have 1 defense roll... but ofcourse those ships never get the evade action in their bar. The only ships that get evade actions are the ships that don't really need it.
