Red Ace and Target Mek

By Tybalt027, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Ello Asty allows for talon roll to be treated as a white manuver.

Targeting astromech says you can target lock after a red maneuver.

For perpous of snap shots, with this pair can I talon then target lock or does the PT effect over ride the mech?

The pilot that lets you treat TRolls as white maneuvers is Ello Asty, not Red Ace. Yes, with Asty you can treat his TRoll as a red maneuver and use the Targeting Astromech to get a lock but why? Stay with the white TRoll and use your action to Target Lock.

Yeah Asty and Target Droid isn't the best combo.

Ello Asty's pilot ability has a "may" in it so you could choose to make the T-roll red, and that would trigger the Targeting mech's TL ability. If you left it as white then the TL would not be gained from the droid but would require an action to do so.

It think that the question that the OP is actually asking is:

"Does Ello's ability allow you treat a T-Roll as white for purpose of checking for stress but red for all other purposes (such as Targeting Astromech)?"

I don't believe that you can. If Ello treats the T-Roll as white and executes it, then a white maneuver is what was executed.

Asty and the target droid seems a good idea to lock and leave a second action open for focus. TRoll is a good way to get behind an enemy then tag them with a torp.

That said, I have never flown rebels. They all seem expensive and need all the gimics they can get. Especially the T70s

Yeah it's either or... Either you make the t-roll white in which case targeting astromech doesn't kick in, or you leave it red and it does.

The only reason I could see to put targeting astro on Ello is if you were going to do a lot of k-turns.

If he chooses to let the T-Roll remain red, Ello gets a Target Lock from the droid but loses his action and is forced to perform a green maneuver before being able to trigger his ability again as opposed to performing a white T-Roll, spending his action on a target lock, and being free to use his ability again the following turn if he wants to do so.

Yeah basically Asty with a targeting droid for T-Rolls is just a waste of 2 points. You can do the EXACT same thing (t-roll and a target lock) with him without the droid. So don't waste the droid slot and points on this combo.

I agree. Waste of points. And not using his ability just to trigger the droid, still leaves you stressed. Not the best option at all.

Not true. If the talon roll is treated as white, he can perform it while stressed.

Ello can't treat a T-Roll as white if he has a stress token. His ability only works when he's not stressed.

There are only two situations that I can think of that Ello would be better chosing to do a red T-Roll to triggger Targetting Astromech than he would be to make it white and just take a target lock action. Both of them involve having specific crits. Damaged Sensor Array or Loose Stabalizer would prevent Ello from taking a target lock action after a white T-Roll but would not prevent Targetting Astromech from granting a target lock.

I can't see spending the points and filling your droid slot just to guard against the chance that you pull one of those crits in a round that it is critical that you take a target lock.

He's not going to get a second action. The droid will only trigger if Ello chooses not to use his ability. After executing a red T-Roll Ello will get a stress and be unable to take another action..

The other one if if you know you're going to bump or hit an obstacle. You'd still get the TA target lock in that situation, but you'd lose your action phase.

But that possibility is totally not worth investing in.

The only X-Wing that wants, and I mean really wants the Targeting Astromech as standard is Hobbie. After he gains the lock, his natural ability will clear the stress and leave you free to perform a standard action. Hello, white K-Turning with TL and Focus X-Wing!

Now, if only he had an EPT slot.

That's right. My bad.
