Unexpected feeling when selling hobby stuff

By Conandoodle, in X-Wing Off-Topic

Sourcebooks, for me, I don't even need to play the game, I derive a lot of enjoyment of just immersing myself in the rules and fictional worlds they describe without even needing a structured narrative.

This is exactly why I have my collection. I've played D&D exactly twice but own around £4K worth of material...

I describe them to people who don't know what they are as basically being travel guides to places that don't exist.

I know a wonderful shop in Waterdeep, has everything you need...

Space... runs... out...

I have less storage space than I'd like at my place.

I was just talking with my wife this past weekend. She's always trying to clean and organize things for me. I've got at least a thousand dollars worth of Warhammer Fantasty Battle that I'll not get rid of as I spent 13 years painting and collecting them. People say I still have the largest OnG collection in the state. I DO need to find a better way to store them. I can't use the attic or the garage as I live in the South. That means plastic melts. So, it's the closet in the office, which is just too full of stuff. So, we are going to try to find creative ways to store things, like under beds and all that. Still don't want to get rid of it even though I don't see me playing GW for a long time.

Hell, if I'm being totally honest, I'm not that into X-Wing. The lack of campaign support, along with tournaments being ONLY dogfights and no variations, is kind of boring to me. That's why I'm carefully planning my purchases so I only get what I need to play.

Oh, I TOTALLY get this. I will say, though, that there are a lot of ways to play X-wing. Too many people get caught up in the tournaments and the 100 pt deathmatch. There are a lot of interesting ways to play the game. I've just given up on the tournament scene and this was my first Store Champ season I ignored (even if I usually do well). I've been getting other people to play the scenarios in the Epic ships with me. I want them to play the epic ship to learn the rules for it. That way, people are ready to play the Epic games and have a clue as to what's going on with them. There are a lot of people that want to play Epic games, as well, in my local store. It's pretty exciting.

The Heroes of Aturi Cluster is a fan made co-op campaign that I'm also about to start. I've heard it's the most fun some people have had with X-wing. Each player is a single Rebel pilot and you play vs. A.I. driven Imperials. There are a ton of missions and variables to it. I hear it even has a lot of replay value. It's free, but requires a bit of printing and cutting out new terrain and such. Looks amazing.

I also want to go through all the little scenarios in all the blister packs that you get. I've done some of them in the past, but I almost want to try them all with all the new pilots and rules and cards and such. I think it would be pretty fun.

There is also the FFG Mission Control where people can upload scenarios. Look up Bobaganoosh's scenarios as they are pretty good. I had a 4 part campaign that always drifted shy of the top 10 list. Besides that, you can always just make up stuff. I do it all the time. When I play Epic, I like to make up the list for both sides. Keep out the special characters and build a game that doesn't have a bunch of broken crap in it. I can usually recruit a bunch of people to play with the big ships and all.

I swear, I really have been thinking about starting a podcast that is about NON-COMPETITIVE X-wing. All the ones out there are all about the competitive scene and I get tired of it. There are so many ways to play X-wing and the competitive people always seem to have such a narrow perspective about what ships you can actually fly in the game. I just need to convince my unmarried friend to take up all the slack of producing it. :)

With the Warhammer stuff, ideally you'd want to display it somehow (I know that since I've put my X-Wing collection in sight and easy reach, I often just take it out for a quick solo game when I've got a spare hour. Before that, it only game out come tournament time).

What's the wall along the stairs doing? :P

That upstairs hallway is too narrow. No can do for displaying. Not easy for 2 people to walk past each other as is.

I'm OK with not displaying it. I just don't want it melted or sold.

100% agreed.

I, and my small group, have zero interest in the competitive side of the game. We will never attend a tournament and never give concern to optimal builds. We fly very .. VERY .. casual.

We've played a few scenarios from the various packs and had a lot of fun with those. I would like to see an initiative of FFG to advance other elements of the game that aren't the standard death-match.

These initiatives might include:

1) Scenario packs - complete with terrain pieces (turrets, shuttle, AT-AT, etc)

2) Campaign material

3) Other things that a simple nerd cannot think of right now

Our emotional attachment to objects related to memories can be pretty **** strong. And we tend to forget these, only to be reminded when we lose these objects / "triggers".

Nah, just going up the stairs, that wall.

But I can also imagine it's not something you'd easily pull off the shelves for a random game. :P .

I have to say i have zero interest in tournament/meta/store play and my mates and i prefer scenarios, campaigns and narrative play.

Shame FFG's weakest point is supporting anything other than 100/6 yawnmatch

I've got a switch back staircase and occasionally move furniture up and down it. I couldn't and wouldn't put anything valuable on the stairs.

What i'd love would be a compendium of all official missions, maybe filler it to an even number with mission control missions and then make a dice based campaign out of it.

I'm trying out the Heroes of Aturi Cluster campaign tonight. It looks fun.

I want to try that so bad...

of course i still need to cut out all the cards.......

You can do it with just 2. I've thought about playing with my son. Maybe one more person....

Good point. Sod it. next games night after imperial assault, this will be a thing.

I may have to get an xwing to custom paint. Eadon vrill+stressbot+kayen+tycho.......

Hell, Ideally i want to find a way to mix it into Imperial assault.

Missions in imperial assault to board stations while fighter cover going on, or rescue a captured pilot etc.

My favorite was that Imperial Tech guy in the grey uniform with the big helmet. I don't know why I liked him so much, but he was the most effective Imperial stooge I had.

X-Wing pilot for me. No idea why but he was just so **** cool. It has carried over to modern days too. I have about 20 lego variants of them.

Tusken Raider, Walrus Man, and Hammerhead. I loved those guys.

And the little plastic lightsaber thingy that slid out of the arm of Darth Vader and Kenobi. Those were state of the art, freakin' cool back in the day. Wish I still had all that old stuff...

I kept all the 70s/80s figures.. too many memories associated with them AND the fact that both my boys played with them when they were old enough. My youngest son, 15, looked a bit upset when I first said I was selling my old star wars toys but when "I said I'm keeping the figures because, in a way, they are also yours" he cheered up a bit

EDIT... AND I just remembered my first 2 figures were Han Solo and R2-D2.. my dad went to the local toyshop (sadly, now a washing machine/ dishwasher/home appliances retailer) and bought them to cheer me up, aged 6, when I was off school with the mumps or measles *nostalgic tear in the eye*

That local toyshop was excellent, even though we lived in the middle of no-where the owner- manager would get stuff in for the next delivery... awesome bloke!!!

It's funny how memories work.

They say that for kids (and I believe it works with adults too) is that they're much more likely to learn from an experience that has an emotion attached to it. The emotion acts an adhesive I guess.

I recall being told by my Aunty that if my cousin and I were good we could buy a SW figure. I recall her growing impatient as it took us a long time to choose. I chose ANH Han and am to this day not sure if I lost his blaster at my cousin's place or if he swiped it.

You should just bring that up the next time you see him. ;)

"Did you swipe my Han Solo's blaster when we were kids? Well, did you?!" :D

I'm thinking of more of an indirect approach. My wife is now 1 week overdue with our daughter. I might consider calling her "Yeah-Cuz-I-Swiped-Your-Han-Blaster" so that I get a written confession from him twice a year on her Birthday and Christmas cards.

Now .. to convince the wife that this is a good choice for names .....

Are you gonna go with a star wars name? :)

No. A mate of mine in Japan called his daughter Leia. It really works in that language. He's a fan but he and wife just liked the name.

My fandom for all things SW doesn't extend to naming my children after characters though. And besides, my wife would lay claim to a Harry Potter themed name for the next one and I couldn't stand having a little 'Dumbeldore Snape Petronis Voldemo .. sorry .. he who shan't be named' running around the house.

I could have my arm twisted to have 'Lando' for a boy though.

A guy I worked with had a friend who named his boys "Boba" and "Jango". Great, I thought, huge Star Wars fans who have done the best thing possible to make their kids hate Star Wars.

Well if you're named "Jango" you can Always clain you were named after the character from the westerns ;)

My girlfriend has okayed my suggestions for when we have kids (eventually)

Mishra if it's a boy and Serra if it's a girl. (I wanted Urza and Mishra in case of twin boys but she shot that down.)

This book might help us.
