Regional Bye

By Overdawg, in Star Wars: Armada

Hey I scored a 5-5 and was only one point away from winning a store championship this weekend!

Let's be honest, that was pretty fluky. Basic 8-2 when for a boy is pretty fair. Especially when nearly all events have an entrance fee. You don't want to get boned out of a game.

Right guys, thanks, I totally confused the Regional Bye for a Bye in a tournament. I can understand that winning the Store Championship gives such a bonus :P I have no problems with that now.

But for regular casual tournaments, I really don't think why a player should be rewarded for not having an opponent by that much. Obviously he loses a chance to score points, but he also loses the opportunity to make someone else gain points. It's less risky to get a bye in casual tournaments than to actually play a game :P

Maybe true, but I'm there to play Armada, and hopefully win (in that order). I see getting stuck with the bye slot as a bummer in any situation. A decent victory 7-3, 8-2) soothes that disappointment. If there's a risk that I get stuck with the bye AND get a score that essentially knocks me out of the running, I would have to heavily reconsider whether or not tournaments are worth the (valuable) time i set aside for it.

Luckily we have wonderful tourney organizers here in Vancouver who are willing to play (or not play) as needed, so we haven't needed to bye yet.

Aaaah, Vancouver, I remember people were awesome when I went there, I see that hasn't changed :D

The system will definitely help the results lead to more winner vs winner matchups. I don't know how far apart or well attended these regionals are, but round one will split the winners and losers (as usual) into two different pools. The weird part will come if there is a high percentage of people with byes added into the winner pool after round one. Now these sharks are added into a larger than normal winner pool to feast on each other. Showing up with the bye just helps increase your chances of playing someone else good enough to win a store champ, since they will all enter round two with identical points.

This isn't very accurate. Anyone can show up and play at Regionals, so winning 8-2 round one is no more difficult that winning a random pickup game. Winning a Store Championship with a decent field is a lot harder. So you can show up with a championship bye, and in round two still face someone who has no idea what they're doing, they just happened to curb stomp someone round one who had less of a clue what they're doing.

So what does the ladies who play get? Sorry, just mocking autocorrect. :)

As you said that was a fluke, and while there may be some places that a 6/4 win is pretty good that's unlikely to be true world wide.

For starters I have no idea how many people show up to a Regionals event for Armada. If you and one other person with a bye show up to a 50-player event, then I totally agree. You're probably not playing him or her. However I do think that giving winners a bye is a bit of an incentive for them to attend, and if I might make a generalization people are more likely to travel in order to attend if they both have a bye and are interested enough in the hobby to play so much that they win events. An event might also be a 32-player where 10 show up with byes, right? That would change the likelihood, I think. Either way whether it's a 2% or a 10% or 20% increase in the likelihood, I think players with identical scores are more apt to face off against each other in a subsequent round than players with differing scores/mov.

Oh absolutely. I was just arguing that the round one score doesn't necessarily reflect skill. Your round one match could be against the next world champion. Or it could be against the guy who stumbled into the store the day before and slapped down some cash because he thought the models look cool and the tourney would be fun.
