Encumbrance

By rgrove0172, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hey,

Reading this thread raised a question in my mind.

With Encumbrance also being used by ships for Cargo (ex: YT-1300 carries Encumbrance of 850) I'm wondering about a parallel to utility belts, backpacks, etc. Things like packing crates, cargo netting, magnetic restraint systems, and the like. Does it makes sense that a ship could purchase gear to maximize its cargo space in a similar fashion?

If so I could imagine that a really good system might require a hard point to be used (magnetic/tractor field, etc), but a simpler system ( with less impact on encumbrance) might just be a purchased item (like cargo netting).

One of the podcasts talks about things being packed away is different than being carried and accessible. Lots of advice to be found, me personally I just do a quick SWAG based on likely length of crates and how high you'd stack a pallet, the dimensions of a hold, etc, and call it done.

There is the concept that putting things in a box or crate allows you to carry roughly 10x as many of those items. I don’t know if this rule is officially written down anywhere, but I think it is a common rule-of-thumb.

On top of that, there are add-on external cargo pods that are shown in one of the diagrams I’ve seen for a YT-1300 — kind of like getting an external cargo pod for your car that you attach to the roof. I don’t know that these are written up anywhere, but it shouldn’t be hard to come up with a house rule for them.

And we’ve certainly seen examples of exterior cargo carrying capacity in the show “Star Wars Rebels”, both with the Ghost itself and with GR-75 cargo ships. I’m pretty sure that those systems aren’t written up anywhere, but it shouldn’t be too hard.

So, yeah — good idea, and I don’t think you’re the first one to go down that path. ;)

It's the droid version of Nodwick.

Now I want to stat this thing up. My players would definitely buy two!

BigDog™ is really flipping loud. That's two-stroke engine in there. Like, bringing a large lawnmower or leaf blower with you. Per OSHA regulations, you need significant hearing protection if you’re going to be close to them for any reasonable period of time.

Speaking only for myself, I wouldn’t want one of those things within a mile of me, regardless of how many packs it could carry or how well it carried them.
