How do the different factions play?

By Boothy, in General Discussion

Hi people

I have heard good things about this game and am going to give it a go (have already borrowed a couple of decks from a friend as a tester). However I was wondering if people could give me a description of how each faction plays…..I realise there are probably multiple builds for each faction, and that they can be combined in many ways to expand these options even further, but a broad brush overview of each faction would be super handy.

Thanks

To answer the original question—very broad strokes:

Stark: Icon spread leans heavily military at the moment. Some direct kill effects. Some standing effects. And a few ways to deny you opponent their sneaky tricks (or punish them for them).

Night’s Watch: These guys are kind of unique. A lot of their cards are based on being rewarded for defending and not allowing unopposed challenges (or conversely, being punished for allowing such challenges). They can also steal characters but there aren’t too many good targets for that yet.

Lannister: Money and scheming. Best economy in the game and a lot of dirty tricks to spend it on after marshalling. A lot of intrigue icons. And lots of ambush. Probably the biggest house for psyching out your opponent. Probably the best house in the game right now?

Baratheon: All about that kneel. Does a great job at dropping characters and readying your own and has ways to benefit from kneeling characters. Very good in the power challenge and, again, able to benefit from winning them.

Tyrell: Kind of similar to Lannister in that they have some economy and trickery. But where Lannister’s tricks are usually about hurting your opponent, Tyrell’s usually benefit you. Strong focus on strength buffing and changing the challenge math on your opponent. Probably my favorite.

Greyjoy: Freaking pirates, man…Up there with Lannister for power in my experience. Whole lot of stealth as well as other ways to make sure you can’t defend challenges. And some nifty ways to take over locations and make them your own.

Martell: Very unique. Their characters and events tend to get more powerful as the game progresses. They also have some interesting ways to control the board by adding or removing challenge icons or removing characters all together (either from challenges or back to hand).

Targaryen: Highly military focused with a whole lot of effects devoted to reducing opposing character’s strength. A little bit of attachment removal and standing and action advantage but really this is all about the strength debuffing.
