Anyone else notice the level of detail variations between the fighters? Whilst i was painting my y wings i noticed that the y wings have way better details then x wings. The imperial fighters all have decent detail for their scale, just seems that the x wings don't.
Details on x wings,.
X-Wings came out poorly.
All the others look great so don't know what happened. Even the A-Wing has better detailing. Once painted looks fantastic.
Unfortunately one of the most iconic fighters came out terrible.
Yeah, the X-Wing is noticeably poorer quality than anything else. The lack of a cockpit on then is just bizzare- though on some of them when painting I noticed there's like a vestigial moulding to the sides that seemed more prominent on others. I wonder if the mould was just faulty.
I also noticed misalignment between the halves on quite a few more Xs.
Only the Xs had to be done for the Core Set, maybe the production just ended up a little rushed?
It may be to do with the more complicated shape of the X-Wing model. Y wings can be cast in a simple 2 part mould so you can add plenty of raised detail. The X-Wing shapes may mean the detail couldn't be so pronounced so that the plastic model could still be released from the mould.

The shape would make those trickier. FFG will have some work to do before it can attempt a TIE Defender as well. Now THAT"S a complicated model to make at that scale.
Sure will.
Looking at the mould lines on an X-wing I think they may have been cast "nose down". This may explain the lack of a cockpit detail, if most of the front fuselage is buried in a steel mould.

And the lack of the nose cone that is one of the x-wing's more prominent features.
Just thought i'd mention it, i want to say im not complaining since armada is an awesome game and has amazing models. The xwings do leave a bit of something to be desired. The other fighters all look fine which leads me to agree with you all.
I was a saaaad panda when I saw how the x-wings came from the factory. I have found the fighter pack x-wings to be less prone to the mold alignment problem.
Solution? Using jeweler's files and a fresh x-acto blade for every stand of fighters (yes, OCD...) I carefully resculpted everything proper. Then I drilled out the lasers and put in 25 gauge blunt needle tips. They took me so much friggin work I've been scared to detail them (I'm going to paint every other fighter I own first to get practice).

I have a set of custom water slide decals with all the details already on them that I'm trying to scale (Millenium Flasehood's x-wing set). If I ever get past real life and finish them, I'll post them up. I'm currently distracted by repainting my ISD's.
Sure will.

An easy solution is to leave some of the flash at the top of the nose when you first clean the model. It approximates the nose cone nicely. See my (painted) Xwings below for example. You might have to zoom in really close to see...
