Swarm Synergies

So this came up in another topic (juke box heroes by S&V), but I really like the idea of bringing a boon for running multiple of the same ship in the form of Swarm Synergies. I always loved a good swarm, especially when its flown well. Sadly nowadays there are better options. In hope to bring back the swarm, let's hope Alex and Frank are reading in and help them a little with ideas for the Swarm Synergies :)

Here's my two cents:

Title - Elite Squadron

When you have 4 or more of the same ship type, increase the hull value of all ships by one.

Note: Swarm Synergies also include named pilots, so fielding 3 academies and Howlrunner grants the bonus. When ships are destroyed and you have fewer than 4 ships on the board, you lose the Swarm synergy.

Not a completely bad idea but the wording should be "4 or more on the board" just for clarity. Also hull means that should one drop below 4 the others could die instantly so I would change it to +1 agility instead

I like it! Saves me 22 points in the 8 TIE swarm!

I'd not keep the name "Elite Squadron" though. You'll be running the greenest of the green to get the most out of them.

Crash Test Squad would be more apt.

I could see people running 3 named pilots, and squeezing in the 4th one with just the title and keeping him far away.

Excellent point. Maybe hull isnt the best example... I feel +1 ag is a bit too powerfull. Perhaps: turn all 2 and 3 bank maneuvers green when having 4 or more on the board?

If you make it board state dependent, then changing physical attributes don't make a whole heap of sense (why would the hull suddenly be better if there are four? And if you lose one you could feasibly lose all of them at once).

The only problem with that is that most swarms are academy's and they really don't care if you make them ps2 instead of 1

Better make it PS +2 as veteran instincts is a very cheap card anyway. When you field 3 generics with Omega Leader, omega leader suddenly becomes PS 10, which is a big difference. So it pays off for the higher PS when they fly in a swarm.

PS isn't a good idea either actually, thanks to VI. We shouldn't want another return to PS wars, we're barely out of the previous one.

A title like ps +1, in combination with VI would make for PS 12 Vader for instance. No, bad idea, bad, don't want it, shouldn't've suggested it. Lazy thinking.

You could make it some sort of Dengar effect where a squadron mate returns fire if your ship is attacked, once per round or something? "Dammit Wedge, where are you?", "Can't shake him!", that sort of thing.

An Agi increase also makes less sense as you have less room to move when formation flying. What about something like:

"Formation Flying" 2 SP

At the end of the round, when you have four or more ships of the same type as your ship (worded better to indicate only one model of ship) you may remove one stress token from each ship of the same type within range 1. This can only be done once per round no matter how many ships have this card.

Draw Their Fire as a squadron based effect? If another friendly ship with "elite squadron the badass bestest generic title" at range 1 is hit by an attack, you may suffer the uncanceled <hits> and <crits> instead.

I think I'd rather see the elite squadron be range dependent.

"while this ship has at least 2 friendly ships of the same type with the elite squadron upgrade within range (1, maybe 2) it gains (insert bonus here)"

That way it rewards players more if they keep their squadron together.

You widen up the usage by not requiring quite as many ships to keep the bonus, and make it a little more resilient to damage (a swarm can probably lose a ship without the bonus dropping off).

But at the same time you make the bonus more skill-dependent, since you'll lose the bonus if you break formation.

So... if I equip this title to all my TIE in a 7 TIE squadron, they all gain +7 hulls, since each of them gives 1 hull to all of them. Too strong.

I like this one. It allows you to spread damage around, making your swarm last significantly longer, and provides a bonus for keeping them in formation.

Another possibility is that ships of the same type within Range 1 could share focus or evade tokens. That would have a similar game effect with the caveat that you have to fly the formation well to receive the most benefit from it.

The withering fire of a swarm it what should make it difficult, not making the wall of ships harder to hit.

"Any ship firing on a ship which has been fired on 4 times this round adds one attack die to their attack."

Or

"defender rolls one less defence die"

As the wall of fire comes in it becomes harder to dodge.
