Expert Handling again

By Smaeks, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hi guys,

I play X wing only for a few weeks so I´m kinda new and we had a lot of discussions since i started.

We had one of these dicussions yesterday about Expert Handling.

As i read the card , and we have the new translation with the word " free" here in germany , i played it on vader ,to gain a third action ,the "free" barrol roll and still using his two regular actions .

But a friend of mine read it a different way and after reading here in the comments, i guess i was wrong .

Iam asking to play it not SLOPPY and secure myself for the next discussion. ;)

So using Expert Handling costs one of vaders regular actions to perform EH, the "free" barrol roll + removing one TL, if there is one on me. After that, i have one action left in case of vader.

So the better way to play Vader would be :TIE/x1 ,Advanced Targeting Computer ,Engine Upgrade and Predator or Marksmanship or something like that.

Thx guys

This is correct. If you're having trouble understanding why your original interpretation of Expert Handling was wrong, I'll try to explain. The phrase "free action" has a specific definition in X-Wing. From page 12 of the Rules Reference: "A free action is an action granted to a ship through a card ability or other effect. It does not count as the one standard action that a ship performs during the 'Perform Action' step." Unless a ship is granted a free action through some ability, it can only perform a single action (or two actions if it's Vader) after its maneuver, and no more.

So the phrasing on Expert Handling's effect is a quirk of the X-Wing rules. You still have to spend an action to activate EH, since it has the "Action:" header. If it simply said, "Perform a barrel roll action," (without the "free") then it could be argued that only Vader could use EH, because he's the only pilot who has two standard actions to spend.

So the better way to play Vader would be :TIE/x1 ,Advanced Targeting Computer ,Engine Upgrade and Predator or Marksmanship or something like that.

In my experience, that build with Predator can be very effective.

Back in wave 2 it was discovered that something that performs like an action is actually not an action. This resulted in the E.H. allowing a barrel roll that was not an action and then a ship performing an extra action could barrel roll again. This was fixed when the free barrel roll from E.H was errated to be a free barrel roll action.

I'm not sure if that was cleared up with the different language versions of E.H. Some of the old cards might still have the wrong text on it.

So the correct actions for Vader would be:

Action 1 : Expert Handling

- Do free barrel roll action

- remove Target Lock

Action 2 : any action other than Barrel roll

So to be clear:

At this point, Expert Handling is a two point EPT that upgrades barrel roll to remove target lock, & gives a ship that doesn't have the ability the upgraded version at the cost of a stress.

Correct?

*: (barring some way to take an action while stressed)

But yeah, you're basically correct.
