What I learnt...

By Arratak, in X-Wing

Hello there. Just a few random thoughts about my 1st x-wing tournament I went to here in Australia..

I posted a list up that we didn't take, I was meant to take of 2 B-wings, a Y-wing and a T-70 X-wing. Well the night before the tournament, I was preparing our stuff, along with a friends list. (He was borrowing some of my ships from my collection to play in the tournament as well.) His list was just thrown together and so I thought, lets play test how well my list would go against my friends, in case we do verse each other...

2 hours later...

WTF??!?!@#@^@&

A mate and I, (who was my doubles partner) were litterally crying after the result. We each handle our friends list, and each game, it smashed my list to bits. We were left with nothing much to say but "we cant let these scrubs borrow my stuff and beat us!" and things like "this is happening, wtf are we doing wrong?!?"

So, in our haste, and anxiety, we put our heads together to come up with a whole new list to try and cover up our flaws.

Midnight rolls past....

1am rolls past...

Coffees were made...

More coffees were made...

3am comes and we head to bed, with headaches, nightmares and on the eve our first tournament, with the fear of looking like complete noobs.

The next day comes we rock up with an entirely un-tested and un-planned list.

It consisted of:

PILOTS

Corran Horn (46)
E-Wing (35), R2-D2 (4), Fire-Control System (2), Veteran Instincts (1), Engine Upgrade (4)

Gold Squadron Pilot (23)
Y-Wing (18), Ion Cannon Turret (5)

Moralo Eval (50)
YV-666 (34), Heavy Laser Cannon (7), Outlaw Tech (2), K4 Security Droid (3), Engine Upgrade (4)

We were sweating bullets...

So as the story goes, we place 2nd, we get a few free x-wing stuff and we go home with our friends sharing the story of the night before.

We share come thoughts afterwards of what we all thought. After all, we were all complete noobs and have only been playing x-wing for a couple of months.

Some thoughts on the lists we took and some of the builds that others took are as follows.

  • Turrets are freaking nasty.... poor flying and maneuverability really don't matter. And they are nearly impossible to out fly. Every list but ours had turrets. In fact, all but our friends list, sonsisted of entirely turrets. PWT's, and Secondary turrets.
  • Expose on decimators really hurt at range 1.
  • Palpetine is no joke. I hate him!
  • E-wings, even with engine upgrade, really aren't that maneuverable. I really wish I thought more about this, in hindsight my original idea with Poe would have been much better. He had autothrusters and would of negated the turrets effectiveness outside of primary arc.
  • I also learnt, if you have tokens, spend them! Several time on Corran, in fact, the last game when he got he lost 4 total HP my heart was broken. I had decided use my focus for the 1st salvo, with the thought that I could survive till the 2nd shot in the end phase... but no sadly I roll 2 blanks and an eye. Had that of been Poe, thats 2 dodge results.
  • The YV-666 is almost as bad as the shuttle. Sure, the s&v have some nice crew that help the action economy. But we were left constantly feeling underpressure to make something happen with his crappy movement dial, we always felt we were pushing a rock up a hill. Even with the pilots ability, and the 180° arc. Line of sight really screwed us.
  • 1 hard turns are so freaking amazing!
  • Large ships with 1 hard turns are so freaking amazing!
  • turret ships with 1 hard turns are amazing!
  • 1 hard turns are amazing!
  • B-wings are slow as f***
  • 1 agility dice really does suck!
  • secondary weapons are awesome to negate range bonuses. Heavy laser cannon is by far the best! followed closely by the TLT.

Anyway... that enough ranting... I'll post more later.

You made a list consisting of Scum and Rebel pilots?

119 points of Scum and Rebel pilots, it seems.

Ya it was a doubles tournament, scum and villainy were allowed to pair with either Rebels or imperials. Each player could take a minimum of 50pts and a maximum of 70 with a combined total of 120pts

That would make more sense then. :D.

Wow... Imagine soontir, brobots and vader in one list.. Lol :)

You wouldn't be able to fit them all in. Brobots are 36pts each with no upgrades

Ah thats a bit too much... Well... Just take IG88 B then ;)

What kind if tourney is this?

EDIT: Nevermind just saw the explanation above

Torkil Mux partnering up with Kallus would be kinda nasty.

So would Xizor and a bunch of TIEs or a Regenerating Rebel.

Guri + Jake, Guri + Chaser could be cool.
