I am interested in this game but find a game in wave 8 daunting. I really enjoy the basic ships such as x wings y wings b wings and a wings for the most part. If I were to only play those ships would I even have a chance and would I just be frustrated by wanting upgrades in the other sets? I f I were to buy what would everyone recommend?
possible new player to buy in have questions
Well, I wouldn't worry about Wave 8 just yet as it's a while back.
If you enjoy Reb snubfighters, recommend you pick up the Rebel Aces expansion for the extra B and A pilots and some good upgrades. Rebel Transport is also worth piking up for the X-Wing pilots and extra Astromechs.
Depends on what you want to do
some players think that they should "BUY THAT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP TOP LIST"
others don't haste and start small, steadily buying expansions and learning new tricks.
I'd recommend the second way, because it really makes you understand the game.
after a couple months of flying Swarms, Advanceds and Interceptors you can take anything and have good chances.
while the "I bought palpatine-mobile" will never even have the chance to learn the game fully.
Buy both core sets for the beginning. lots of neat toys to experiment with!
X-wing depends which one. The T-65 is a little underpowered at the moment, though buying the T-70 pack somewhat helps rectify this situation, because of the upgrade card "Integrated Astromech" which greatly helps the T-65. Y-wings are solid, though there isn't much variety. Most people would probably recommend getting the Most Wanted pack, to get some of the amazing Y-wing upgrades there. B-wings are still pretty solid, though you don't see them to often in the current meta. I highly recommend getting Rebel Aces for more B-wing upgrades. A-wings are pretty underpowered, but if you get the Rebel Aces pack, that can make A-wings quite dandy.
Of course you could play the game with just this stuff, but you'd probably want other upgrade cards.

Welcome to the Addiction, and feel free to ask questions if you have any.
Edited by YwingAceThere's plenty of fun to be had just playing the classic ships you like/are familiar with (that's how I started), though you may find yourself getting curious about the other factions as time goes on. I'd recommend the Core set, obviously (And/or the Force Awakens Core set), and, judging from your preferences, the Rebel Aces box (contains an A-wing and a B-wing, plus a host of unique upgrades, including the all-important Chardaan Refit for the A-wing). From there, just get the individual ships you're into!
Upgrades you want/need coming with ships you're not into is, unfortunately, a reality, but all the card info is available for free online (like this Squad Maker, which also tells you what expansions each card comes in), so it's easy to proxy them in if you're just playing with friends. Though most people tend to branch out into other ships/factions the longer they play the game.
I planned to only buy a limited amount, but ended up buying practically everything. Not because I needed it, but because I wanted it.
Are you trying to start a family collection, so you and your wife (if you have one) can play? Or is it just you? I noticed you only mentioned Rebel ships. That could hold down the costs somewhat.
You could do 1 of each Core Set (red original and blue TFA), Rebel Aces, and standalone packs for the X Wing, T-70 X Wing, A Wing and B Wing. That would be a ton of stuff to mess with (2 Xs, 2 T70 Xs, 2 As and 2 Bs). Then expand to taste.
The good thing is that almost everything is good. There are some ships that are *slightly* ahead or behind the curve, but the most important thing is being able to fly it well.
There's been A LOT of threads on this subject. You can check them out on here and also over at the X-wing page on BoardGameGeek. It really depends on how much you want to invest in the game and whether you're playing casual or competitive. In a casual setting you can just get the ships you like and 'proxy' the lists (print them out without needing every specific card). If you want to play competitively you'll actually need the physical cards.
Edit: ninja'd
Edited by jblum23Buy what you want and learn what works for you. If you're new, you don't even know your own play style. If you stick with the traditional lists, you could still probably play something that's at least 90% as good as the 'top tier' lists once you've learned a bit about the game.
There is some great info here guys thanks. I'm already deep into armada love the game and it would continue to be my main minis game but I'm interested in x wing on a casual level.
If I were to get the two starters the rebel aces and one a and b wing exp would that put me in a good casual situation? will i be heartbroken not having the cards in the x wing exp?
Oh we all said we'll go slow at first, we wouldn't get hooked and pay silly money.
Then it's two years later you own three fleets and several epic ships and you've made peace with it.

it's more than enough for a rebel.
just take T-65 X-wing expansion and you'll be able to make my favourite X-wing.
the BAT-WEDGE
except for engine upgrade, sadly
also consider Falcon. not for gaming, not for cards.
For being iconic, and for desktop centerpiece goodness (Unless there's an ISD parked there)
Edited by WarpmanA couple of things. Do you plan on playing casual or competitive? Do you play at stores or houses? Is the community great or so so?
For the most part I would say buy the ships you like. If you play in a casual environment then proxy the upgrades you don't have. If your community is good then you can borrow upgrades to be legal for tournament play.

If you are just playing casually just buy the ships you
like and proxy the upgrades you want to use. Until you start playing in tournaments almost nobody is going to care that you don't actually have the upgrade cards.

Two years? Hell, my seven year old son and I started in October 2015. We now have 119 ships, four of which are Huge Ships. Ridiculously good fun and cheaper than golf.
will I need lots of upgrades from other ships?
The first thing you need to decide is if you are going to play casually or competitively. If the former, you can buy what you want, and proxy what you need. If the latter, you'll need to invest far more heavily in ships and/or secondary-market upgrades.
I've already answered this question but no one seems to see it lol

People read the OP and then answer the questions there while ignoring the rest of the thread.
If you play casually, buy what you want and proxy the rest.
will I need lots of upgrades from other ships?
No. Each expansion pack comes with not only a ship, but a good array of upgrades for that ship
For example, here are some of the most common upgrades I've seen on A-Wings:
Chardaan Refit
Proton Rockets
A-Wing Test Pilot
Push the Limit
Veteran Instincts
Daredevil
The first three of those come with an A-Wing in Rebel Aces. The fourth comes in the A-Wing expansion pack. So by buying A-Wings, you'll already have many of the best upgrades for A-Wings.
While upgrade combos do have an impact on this game, player skill is still much more important. If you want to win, practice a lot. If you want a close match, just find another inexperienced player to play against.
If you feel you need to have literally the best possible configuration for your ship, you can always print out the images of upgrades you want and use those instead of official cards. Nobody will care except at a tournament.
--------
If you like running just basic, lightly-upgraded ships (I know I do), in rebels only, then A-Wings, B-Wings and Z95 Headhunters are great choices. A-Wings work great with just Chardaan Refit, and B-Wings and Headhunters are more popular without any upgrades than with.
X-Wings and T-70 X-wings usually use powerful astromechs like R2-D2 (from the original red core set) and BB-8 (from the new blue core set), with various elite pilot talents. While I find T-70 X-wings a lot more fun to fly than the original X-Wings, if you really want to play with the originals you'll find they're mediocre without Integrated Astromech, a modification upgrade than comes 1 copy apiece in the separate T-70 Expansion Pack.
Y-Wings need either a turret upgrade or a torpedo upgrade (you get both in its expansion pack) to not be horrible. The torpedo versions are much weaker. You may be frustrated that the Twin laser Turret from the $20 K-Wing expansion pack is much more powerful than the Ion Cannon Turret in the Y-Wing pack, but the K-Wing pack does have 2 copies. You may also be frustrated that many of the ways to kit out your Y-Wings (including gaining the ability to drop bombs or attack twice in a turn) come in the Most Wanted Expansion pack, a $40 pack whose ships have scum and villainy pilot cards, not rebel pilot cards. To use Most Wanted's 1 Y-Wing and 2 Z95 Headhunters in your rebel squad, you'll need to buy some rebel packs anyway just for the rebel pilot cards. You can always use printouts of the upgrades though.

You don't need them to have fun, but they do give you extra options.
Each expansion you buy will add upgrades that some of your other ships can take.
Millennium Falcon comes with 2 copies of Engine Upgrade, for example, which any non-epic ship can use to gain the boost action.
If you plan to use the HWK-290 for its awesome support abilities, I would also buy a single K-wing expansion. The K-wing comes with 2 copies of the Twin Laser Turret which the HWK-290 can use.
Rebel Aces and the HWK-290 come with crew members you can use on any ship that can take crew.
The YT-2400 comes with some unique options and is a fun quirky ship.
The core sets and Rebel Aces come with different pilots than the stand-alone expansions, I would buy one of each for variety.

this was some great input thank you very much
so as of right now I'm looking at 1 of each starter, 1 a b and y wing, and 1 rebel aces. Anything else you guys heavily recommend?
Edited by TirionFor the beginning it's just enough.
although nothing super-effective, there's plenty of good toys there to play with.
some fun things can be found in other expansions, like blister T-65 or T-70
other things like Falcon are also worth considering.
when Ghost arrives it's a must-have for a rebel (despite being pretty ugly and being a cartoon mary sue brick'o'hull)
because it's a behemoth that WILL have a really really unique bowling gameplay (and things with really unique gameplay are must_have_ones)

So in your opinion would I be at a disadvantage playing casually with this stuff?
