Return to Mirkwood Nightmare pure solo : done.

By Lecitadin, in Strategy and deck-building

I've finally beaten RTM Nightmare in pure solo.

Not a new deck, it's a power deck we've seen around, but this quest is so unbalanced and nasty for solo play that I had to tweak the deck.

You have to be lucky with the encounter deck, so it's almost purely a matter of luck (that's why I say that's it's unbalanced).

It took me 12 tries with this deck!

If you did it with another deck, I would like to know!!!

Congrats! RtM is fun in multiplayer and fun with solo-spirit but stupidly hard in other cases.

Would Favor of the Valar work as well, or are you lacking the resources for it? Having him absorb a tantrum seems like a good deal. Also A Watchful Peace seems like a good fit against this deck, because the locations are by far the tamest of the encounter cards. Elfhelm would also help.

I beat it once with a Caldara deck, with Eowyn and Idrean. Due to the high starting questing power, I would get through the game really quickly (playing Galadrim's greetings) and then I could sacrifice Caldara in the end to bring two Northern Trackers into play to help kill the enemies. If I encountered an Attercop or other insane enemy early it is usually game over, so that's why I included watchful peace and even Shadow of the Past (an underrated card for sure). Also, Elfhelm.

One thing that is especially hard about this quest is that you need to exhaust a hero at the start of every quest phase, even if there are no Tantrums in the discard pile yet. And this is before committing characters to the quest, so you can't just commit Glorfindel with LoV and then exhaust him. It's really tough. Boromir doesn't mind the exhaust, but the quest is already very punishing with its threat raises.

When I beat the quest, I exhausted Boromir each turn (as always), but I got a lot of locations from the encounter deck. I ended up with a threat of 48, and (like Seastan in his video), to defend Attercop, I had to sacrifice Glorfi and 2 allies the previous turn.

If you get Attacop before Boromir is ready to defend decently, you're done.

I almost flipped the table after 5 or 6 tries.

Yes this quest is really hard to beat…
