Monochromatic painting question

By TheUnsullied, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

Has anyone here tried this for Imperial Assault figures? I'd love to get my minis paintied but time and resources(and skill at painting) are wearing thin and I heard that this was a viable alternative.

Has this worked well for anyone? If so what did you use to do it and how did you go about it? Are there specific colors that work better than other? Sorry I'm completely new to miniatures and don't think I can keep up with Sorastro or some of the others on the site so I thought I might try something else. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Also if it did work for anyone I'd love to see a picture of their final product so that I can see what they would look like.

I remember someone a while back had theirs painted sorta like fine chess pieces; goldish bronze, and dark silver, for the Rebels, and Imps/mercs respectively. it looks really nice.

Can't find any pics though.

EDIT:

Found a Thread on Board Game Geek about this. Her's a pic:

That actually looks pretty rad.

I like that. I've already started with Sorastro's videos so I'll keep going with them (even though I'm way behind!), but if I was starting out brand new, I might consider this.

A few suggestions if you go the mono-chromatic way:

  • Put a coat of primer on your miniatures first! It will help your paint to stick to the miniature better, so you'll have less trouble with the paint chipping off or going on poorly.
  • Buy some Nuln Oil by Citadel Paints and use it to give a light wash over every figure. The picture you see above is the result, with some nice details and shading. It's EASY to do (believe me, I was surprised how easy and how effective it was!) and it really makes a big difference.
  • Seal the finished product with a varnish of some sort. I know many people use Testor's Dullcote matte varnish, but there are other (probably less expensive) options too.

Color suggestions, since you asked for them: If I were doing this, I would consider finding a shade of Red and Blue and Green that I liked, to correspond with the backs of the Rebel, Imperial and Mercenary deployment cards. If you don't want to do it that way, then go with whatever you'd like. I'd definitely suggest that you avoid Black, because that will negate any shading or highlighting benefit that you'd gain from the Nuln Oil wash.

If you're doing the monochromatic route then you might want to make your life easier and use acrylic spray paint to color your miniatures, rather than a bottle and brush; it'll be much faster and a lot less work.

I'll definitely try it with the nuln wash. On the post with the metallic ones they recommend using the ink(is this the same as nuln oil?) after the first layer of color. Is that what you mean when you say give it a light wash?

Sorry if those are dumb questions I've never painted miniatures at all before.

I'm not totally sure how it would work with metalic paint, but I'd assume it works the same as with regular paint. I've never used ink for this, so maybe they're referring to Nuln Oil or maybe they're thinking of something else.

But basically yes, that's how it works:

-You cover the area with the main color. Smooth, even coverage is what you're looking for here. Leave no gaps.

-Then you take some Nuln Oil and lightly spread it over the miniature so that the oil can wash into the cracks and crevices; be sure not to overdo it though; apply a little at a time, because you're looking for a subtle effect. Then, if you want, you could apply a little more paint (with a brush) to highlight or cover over certain areas of the miniature...but if you're doing the monochrome thing then you would probably skip this step.

-Then when you're happy with the look of the miniature, spray on your coat of varnish. I would highly recommend a matte varnish rather than a glossy one; the matte varnish will look more natural and be less disruptive than a gloss varnish in most cases.

The finish on those minis is very acceptable to a first time painter (and any gamer) IMHO.

Black primer, dry brush a color onto the surface, (or other techniques that works for you) spray finish and your are ready to take on the empire.

It doesn't need to be fancy. As long as you can tell what mini is in what team, you're good to go.

Just do as nice a job as you can. In the end, the fun part is playing the game with a friend!

For Silver Metal use Nuln Oil for Gold/Bronze use Earthshade or Fleshshade.

What color/colors should I prime the minis with? I assume grey for the silver ones but not sure about the copper or gold for the others.

I always use a black primer for metallic-colored figures.

Those gold Rebels give me an idea for the future. I don't have time to do it before this year's store championship, but for next year's: a gold-painted AT-ST mounted on a trophy base.

One more question what would be the best kind of varnish to use? I'm from Houston so from what I've read spray varnish is a bad idea because of the humidity. Is there a really solid brush varnish I should grab? The only thing I've really read is that the GW Ardcoat is pretty meh.

Research "minwax dip miniatures". You wont be disappointed.
