Clones or Droids

By ThePatriot, in Star Wars: Force and Destiny RPG

I'm wondering what is the general opinion on using either clones or droids to use for the Tython System Integrated Armed Forces in the current game I'm in.

The current group plans are to restore the Je'daii Order in the Tython System during the time of the Empire. I'm looking at the costs and benefit analysis for using clones or droids to fill out the ranks of the military. Both are ideal compared to the other option of recruiting people of all species. Clones and Droids can be programmed for loyalty and won't betray the Je'daii Order to the Empire. Non-clone species are an unknown when it comes to loyalty, so I'm looking at the pros and cons for Clones and Droids. What's your opinion?

How light side is your Je'daii? In our Clone Wars game the ethics of "programming" biological soldiers is a significant issue.

Well we're using the custom rules I wrote for the Je'daii which uses Balance instead of Morality. His balance currently is -10 on the Light/Dark Side Scale with 0 on the Living/Unifying Force and Cosmic/Physical Force scales.

Driods would have overall less maintaince cost. Plus like greater variety.

We ended up going with droids because of the cost for them and how fast we can get them.

Devil's advocate here: there are major ethical implications for using either Drones or Clones. Both are effectively sentient and capable of making their own choices, unless that choice is removed from them via programming. Neither are a volunteer army.

It's one thing for the Jedi to employ droids as maintenance and labour forces, where they can be cared for and maintained with respect. But to use them in battle and risk their "lives" is something that would have given many Jedi pause, even back in pre-Old Republic times. (To say nothing of the reliance on technology in order to accomplish military goals.)

The pragmatism of the Republic's use of clone soldiers during the Clone Wars came with its own kettle of ethical problems that are pretty well covered elsewhere.

To be frank, I find it hard to conceive of a Jedi order that used anything but volunteer forces.

Ethical considerations noted, but in the game I'm in we're not rebuilding the Jedi Order. We're rebuilding the Je'daii Order which predates the Jedi Order by 10,000 years. As far as sentience is concerned, it can develop over time in droids as long as their memories are not wiped. If they're wiped regularly they will never develop sentience.

A good counterpoint for a Jedi's view about droids is Obi-wan. He hated droids and treated them like appliances, so it ultimately comes down to how the individual Jedi views it.

Oh there's definitely precedent for both droids and clones being used as armies by the Jedi -- and being used without consideration for their sentience, too. (Obi-Wan being one example. Ironically, Anakin was more considerate of both clones and droids as far as their identities and self-worth was concerned.) Just a thought on the "foundations" this Order is setting for themselves. If they're comfortable with this, well...who knows what they're capable of, down the road?

Well droids are designed and manufactured for a specific purpose. One could argue that when a war droid develops sentience that it would follow along the lines of the original design and programming. For example, a war droid programmed not to harm innocents during combat and develops sentience would respect life of innocents, but will still do was it was designed to do. Which is to kill enemy armed combatants.

I know that my character respects life in all its forms, but the practical consideration of taking control of a star system in the Deep Core requires the use of droids for the time being. The only life present in the system is on the criminal syndicate world of Shikaakwa, so a volunteer military is out of the question at this point in time. To protect the system from pirates and criminals, droids must be used in the interim until the rest of the worlds are colonized and there is a population to support a volunteer military.

You're game is a Dawn of the Jedi style pre-Jedi, pre-Republic game, I take it?

The Old Republic had you fight ancient droids as a common enemy on Tython, particularly around the old temple ruins.

Naw, it's right after the Battle of Yavin is when it takes place. We're just going for the original Je'daii.
