Was thinking about picking up the Corondexx VES-700 Pulse Rifle for my character for some much needed crowd control. Here is my question: can I strap an augmented spin barrel to that thing? Does it qualify as a blaster rifle for the purposes of that attachment?
Next question if I cannot attach an augmented spin barrel: what should I strap to that thing?
VES-700 Pulse Rifle
which book is it in?
Reads like a blaster rifle, don't see why you wouldn't be able to.
which book is it in?
I think it's in Far Horizons, sorry don't the book with me to check.
It's in Fly Casual.
Looks like the basic premise is a submachine gun. really high rate of fire. which will make it more likely a few bolts will hit. Blast is a good way to simulate that.
For me the most interesting option would be to mount a spread barrel. If the VES is to be regarded as Blaster Rifle there is no rule against using this upgrade. That would - assuming that two sources for qualities stack - lead to a weapon with base damage 8, blast 12. As the VES is not restricted and doesn't have the limited ammo quality it would seem to me the ideal choice for a crowd-control weapon.
And would be like an AA12 shotgun

I don't think that's how it would work, unfortunately. I think you would get a Blast 6 from the Pulse Rifle, and an additional Blast 6 from the Spread Barrel, instead of Blast 12. Doesn't mean it's not good of course, especially with jury rigged, you could activate 2 Blast 6 blasts, but it's not Blast 12 good.

Why not? Giving a Virboblade that already has pierce a mono-molecular blade to enhance this quality further is not uncommon. Also giving a Rifle that is already accurate a forearm grip to get a second accurate-dice is possible. As well as giving a weapon with the vicious-quality a serrated edge. 2x Blast 6 is nice, but i think it would be blast 10 or 12 when the mods are applied.
The problem with such weapons is the same as with jury rigged autofire: The Game-Master has to react to keep the game chellenging and therefore split groups (6 minions become 2x3 minions) or let them appear in even greater numbers, but this are meta-thoughts and should not be part of the consideration.
Edited by KomrkThe rule does provide guidance on mods and points out any applied need to make sense. In addition Spread Barrel's base modifier "grants" Blast 4, it does not say adds +4 to Blast. The only thing I would allow is mounting it and being able to use the Blast mods to it, although it's kinda crappy as it dumps your range to short with the weapon.
You're example of the mono-molecular edge proves the point, as it does not grant pierce, it has 2 +1 Pierce mods available to the attachment.

As 2P51 said, the Spread Barrel grants the Blast 4 weapon quality. It does not give the weapon +4 Blast. You could, however, use the mods, since they specify Blast+1 instead of granting a base quality.
I'm pretty sure it's technically a blaster rifle, so any attachment that can work with a blaster rifle would work with the pulse rifle.
As for what else could be done, here are some ideas I think are cool:
1) At encumbrance 4. So you could use a Hands-Free Weapon System on your armor for 2 HP and 1 HP on the rifle. Then with the remaining 2 HP you could add a mixture of a laser sight, superior, or an electronic sighting system. Combine all of this with cybernetic retinal tracker and you have a weapon that can reliably trigger Blast, doesn't take a hand to use, and is considered always ready.
2) Use the pistol grip to make it use Ranged(Light), Jury-Rig it to reduce it's encumbrance to 2, then fill in the other 2 HP with a similar mix from the first option. Now you have a pistol sized sawed-off shotgun effectively. It could even be hidden in a smuggler's trench coat.
3) This one requires a different take on some narrative. Put a Marksman Barrel on it, and describe it as firing a cohesive "pulse ball" that bursts on contact, showering the target and surrounding area with many small pulses. Then you could attach a scope, and have a weapon similar to the concussion rifle from the later Dark Forces games (the primary fire mode that launched an energy projectile that had an blast radius on impact).
Isn't the name "Corondexx VES-700 Pulse Rifle" ?!?!?
So I guess it's a good bet it's a Rifle ?!?
Since it uses Ranged(Heavy), it's another good indication it's a Rifle, and uses 2 hands.
The VES-700 is a recycled blaster from the Galaxy Guide 10 : Bounty Hunters .
The book is probably packed in a crate in my basement, but if I remember correctly, it shot a wave of energy in a 30 degre arc in front of the rifle. I seem to remember a picture but it might be for another gun.
It would be quite awesome if the +4 damage from the Overcharge Valve attachment also increased the Blast damage.
A lot of good suggestions here. I hadn't considered using the spread barrel regardless of whether or not it stacked. The reason I wanted the spin barrel was for the pierce quality mod it can get which would apply to the blast damage. I think it had pierce. I'm working from memory here since I won't be able to see the books until Wednesday.
I have already applied an electronic sighting system to it. Laser sight can't be applied to any blast weapon. I am actually planning on using the hands free weapon system for a sonic rifle for some long range non-lethal.
Overcharge valve had occurred to me, but it would only apply to primary damage and increases the price to 25 credits per shot due to the emptying of the clip.
A lot of good suggestions here, so thanks.

I don't think anyone was disputing the fact it was a rifle, but checking on whether or not a pulse rifle is still a blaster rifle, for purposes of attachments.

I forgot laser sights can't be put on any weapon with blast, my mistake. The augmented spin barrel does have 1 mod to add pierce +1.
