What do you think of this rumor?

By BattlePriest, in X-Wing

Meh, Space Sherlock can stay in the EU abyss, please and thankyou.

I think since Heir to the Empire helped re-ignite Star Wars for most people (although I think the WEG RPG deserves a ton of credit for keeping it percolating and establishing a TON of the old EU canon), it and Thrawn tend to get a little overrated. After a long time in the desert, of course that first drink of water is going to taste like Dom Perignon.

Return of Characters?

Thrawn and HK-47 please! :D

I remember the dark times. I also remember SW when it was just one movie. It's been a crazy roller coaster for decades, so much good stuff and so much crap. Now we have to opportunity to take the best and leave the rest to rot. I would love to see Thrawn again, and in his rise up the ranks, similar to Tarkin during the clone wars. But please NO clone Jedi.

As cool as Thrawn is, I WANT MORE TARKIN GOSH DANGIT!!!

man this is the kind of thing that could really be in the rebels thread

Perhaps you should start a thread that lets people know what does and doesn't belong in certain threads. A PSA of sorts?

Probably because Zahn is most definitely not the same writer that wrote his original trilogy. He should never be allowed to write Thrawn or Mara ever again.

What you mean? I have not read anything from him since the original Thrawn trilogy.

Let's just say, if people complain about Rey being a Mary Sue, they really, really need to look at what Zahn did with Thrawn and Mara.

First off, the OP should put in some text with what the video is about. I'm at work and have no access to YouTube. I had to sneak away and start the video on my phone just to know what the heck this thread is about. Please have a bit of a summary in text.

Next, this to me just completely validates my theory of what they are going to do with the EU. Did they throw it all in the trash? No! They call it a "legend", or basically a rumor. What I see them doing is yanking back all the favorite characters, but they don't have to be beholden to all the various plots they are in. So, Thrawn can come back, but possibly all the stuff that happened in the Thrawn series isn't true. Or....they will redo it in the future, but surely tweak it somewhat. Basically, all these cool characters won't be thrown away....they are just waiting to be REUSED into a story line that fits the current canon. Personally, I'm very happy about that as I think a lot of the EU is sub par and terrible. So, they can take the general idea of a character or plot and actually redo it decently. Or throw away the bad stuff. There is a lot of bad stuff to throw away.

Thrawn is an overrated character, that has been mary sue'd into the awesomest bestest character that ever lived even worse then Boba Fett.

I wouldn't mind seeing him back, but only if they actually wrote him well.

I'm still waiting for them to announce a live action TV series adapted from the X-wing books (PLEASE DISNEY PLEASE)

There was talk of one for HBO that was going to be adult themed.....but if fell apart before Disney bought it. You won't see that now.

It was already falling apart, long before the Disney buy out.

I would be thrilled if this rumor turns out to be true, and it fits with how Disney handled the removal of the old Expanded Universe from canon.

Disney didn't simply get rid of all the EU stuff (and they could have since they own it), rather, Disney re-titled the EU material as "Legends" and explained that those stories aren't part of the official canon for Star Wars ... which Disney really needed to do in order for The Force Awakens to make any sense due to the fact that so many story elements in TFA directly contradict events that happened in the EU stories.

You can have "legends" (which are basically historical myths) based on official canon characters and those canon characters can still show up in future canon movies, TV shows, and whatever else Disney approves.

Bottom line, I'd say this rumor is believable in the sense that Disney can still use EU characters like Thrawn, Mara Jade, Kyle Katarn, and others ... it's just that Star Wars fans have to accept the fact that the original EU stories are "legends" (or historical myths) involving these characters and not the actual events that took place in the Star Wars universe.

Return of Characters?

Thrawn and HK-47 please! :D

Someone needs to read Darth Vader. :D

So wait, what is actually main-line canon now? Movies, books, tv shows and videogames?

I had kind of been under the impression that XWM itself had re-canonized all of the EU players who popped up in it, because everything has been LFL approved? Obviously those characters lost all their adventures and connections, but I thought at the very least their baseline existence had been renewed (ie. there is definitely a guy named Dash Rendar and he definitely flies a YT-2400 called the Outrider)

My response? Give me Revan or give me death!

Given Kylo Ren's look and tracing his lightsaber design to the "Scourge of Malachor", I'd say the chances of Revan having been part of history very similar to how we know him are good. He just had a cross guard lightsaber in the new canon which he carried when he had Malachor V laid to waste at the end of the Mandalorian War.

YES. I WANT TO KILL MEATBAGS WITH MY FAVORITE HOMICIDAL MANIACAL DROID.

I love HK-47. Every crew needs a depressed, sarcastic, and homicidal assassin droid. No, I am not being sarcastic.

Sorry about that, I will remember next time. I sort of wanted it to be a surprise and it is a rumor after all, so I am not sure of it (whether to be excited or ...). Once again, sorry.

Disneyverse is ****, so naturally I don't really care.

Oh yes, maybe next the Rebels will visit a Queen in an Ice castle on an ice planet like Hoth. ;)

I kid, I kid.

It's not a rumor. Did you actually read the statement that Disney said? That's basically how they explained it, but everyone was just too upset to listen.

My response? Give me Revan or give me death!

I love almost all the KOTOR characters, but wouldn't Revan be a few thousand years old? Honestly the only one I can see surviving to the A New Hope era is Jolee Bindo.

the Ebon hawk would make a cool sister ship to the falcon! or father ship? Mother ship/ i mean it would be OLD... but still cool...

They can canonize him indirectly via Revanites, directly via a holocron presence, or they can reference his lineage.

What ever Disney puts out since they own the franchise. Still that doesn't affect what FFG already released.

Think of Star Fleet Battles. The game that takes place in the TOS era it has the Standard Cannon Federation, Klingons, and Romulans as well as the Gorn (even though we never saw a Gorn ship in the TOS). However it had al some made up races for cannon as well like the Hydrans, the Lyrans, the Kitzini and the ISC. None of those races ever appeared in either the original series or later ones (neither does the Gorn for some reason) they are still in any Star Fleet Battles game, which have gone out of print.

Well that is sort of more depressing foreshadowing than encouragement. Well just be glad that as of now the game is alive and well and I think Disney is pleased with FFG's handling of the license otherwise why else would they extend the contract with FFG.

The kzinti were in the animated series. The cartoon stole them from Larry Niven. (The lyrans might gave been mentioned there too, I'm not sure).

A gorn eventually showed up in the last season of Enterprise

The license for star fleet battles is kinda weird and a bit convoluted. The core of what they are allowed to use comes from a Star Trek sourcebook, the star fleet technical manual, and a couple sets of blueprints, all from way back in the day. They are allowed to use anything from those plus select stuff from the original series and the animated series. They are explicitly NOT allowed to use any character names or "enterprise" or "Star Trek". Amarillo Design Bureau took that material that they were allowed to use and ran with it, essentially creating a wholly separate setting that isn't really connected to Star Trek, called the Star Fleet Universe. The setting is surprisingly well developed, and very internally consistent, although a bunch of the history is little more than a Star Trek reskin of world war 2. They have kind of run into the problem now of having nothing more to do with the game. They have extended the timeline about as far as they can, both forward and back. The rules have basically been perfected as far as they can be so a brew edition is out. They can't really squeeze any more races into the region of the galaxy around the federation. So they gave been kinda stuck inventing new, completely isolated regions of space with totally new races that have no connections to humans or the rest of the familiar species.
