Understandable, with a stroke of the "pen", they decanonized alot of our favourite characters; I for one would love to have Thrawn and Soontir Fel back in canon again.

I had kind of been under the impression that XWM itself had re-canonized all of the EU players who popped up in it, because everything has been LFL approved? Obviously those characters lost all their adventures and connections, but I thought at the very least their baseline existence had been renewed (ie. there is definitely a guy named Dash Rendar and he definitely flies a YT-2400 called the Outrider)

As far as I know, only the movies, the two TV shows (Clone Wars and Rebels) and all new books beginning with New Dawn are canon.

This rumor has been out for about a week now, and yeah it's pretty exciting. I think it has greater implications for Armada though, but it's still awesome.

An interesting thing someone pointed out. Thrawn's big thing was getting insight into his enemy's psychology by studying their artwork, one of the main characters in Rebels is an artist. that would make Thrawn a really good match dramatically as an adversary for the show.

I think video games since the cut off point are also canon (Battlefront hardly counts due to the lack of any real story, apart from the Battle of Jakku I guess). Star Wars: Uprising on mobile is supposedly canon (which is slightly awkward since they are adding force users and lightsabers though they are yet to unlock).

You know who I would prefer they recanonized? Starkiller (and Juno and Proxy). He would would a great villain for Season 3 Rebels. A sort of dark counterpart for Kanan.

No. TFU is a terrible story to recanonize.

Star Wars was basically gathering dust and totally lost its social relevance after the Droids and Ewoks series in the mid 80's. The few products and books that were launched were either just toys or incredibly bad merchandise literature.

It all changed in 1991 when Timothy Zahn wrote the Thrawn trilogy. Star Wars had again a charismatic villain, with an intriguing story and our heroes felt themselves in trouble. It brought life back to Star Wars, and heavily influenced the creation of the X-Wing PC game saga that was the first Star Wars videogame made by LucasArts after Lucas recovered the license.

It is really easy to see the evolution of all of this:

Thrawn made people get interested in Star Wars, that led to the Special Editions, that led to the Prequels, and to today's golden age of series, new movies and stories.

At the same time Thrawn sat at the heart of the X-Wing Pc games storyline, that led to many games that followed it, that ultimately led to this X-Wing Miniatures game.

Argue about the gameplay all you want TFU (the original I never played the second) was (by far) the best Star Wars story since the original trilogy (including Kotor, I mean, a secret ancient space station that produces massive spaceships magically? Please...). The overpowered force abilities were just a game gimmick to make use of Havoc, you really need to ignore that stuff.

It won the WGA award for best video game writing (and with good reason).

Thrawn can come back and bring Soontir Fel as well? Maybe with Maarek Steele?

Have them blow up a few members of Phoenix Squadron, foil a few rebel plans, maybe kill a corvette and then get reassigned elsewhere. That's all I want!

Not caring about "canon" is my personal way here.

Why care? I want a good game, a story worth re-reading and character worthy of remembering.

Whether it's a canon or not simply matters not.
