Decipalp a viable build?

By joyrock, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I've got a store championship coming up, figured I'd run a different build than I'm usually seeing. I'm not particularly great anyways, so might as well just have fun :)

Oicunn + palp, Vader, daredevil, and Engine Upgrade

Omega Leader + Juke and Communication Relay

Wampa

I've had decent success with this so far, with the Deci hounding targets and threatening collisions with Daredevil, while Omega and Wampa do their thing. Anyone else have any experience with something like this?

The list doesn't fare particularly well against swarms, which is kind of a problem.

I think I'd much rather go with Kenkirk + Ysanne + Palp + EU, just to keep Palp alive longer AND to give him something to work with in regards to defending the Decimator.

It even leaves room for the OL and Wampa you're looking for.

I certainly wouldn't slap Darth Vader crew on the Deci-Palp -- don't particularly relish the thought of throwing away all those extra points in upgrades even faster, especially since it reduces the amount of time Palp can trigger.

Now, a Suicide Deci w/ Vader crew is a completely different story. I keep thinking about taking it to a tournament, but then I remember that we're in a Rebel Regen/Stress meta, so DV crew isn't nearly as effective as it could be, and the Deci gets eaten up no matter how you spin it.

Decipalp certainly is, but that decipalp isn't - you've got a lot of conflicting stuff on it - Palpatine wants to survive as long as possible, but you've stuck him on Captain Ramming Speed and stuck Vader in there as well, ensuring that he'll die quicker.

The version I've seen be VERY effective is Chiraneau/VI/EU/Palp/Gunner with an ace of your choice (Vader/VI/EU/x1/ATC fits neatly and is a VERY strong combo, but so would Soontir, or Omega Leader, or a stripped-down Phantom).

Kenkirk/Isard/Palpatine also works well to keep Darth Psoriasis alive as long as possible.

Pair with Engine Upgrade and Push The Limit for high PS maneuver shenanigans - use push the limit to boost off Isard's free evade action at the start of the combat phase, not during the activation phase - voilla! PS13 boost.

Plus, of course, Agility 1 with a free evade sounds a bit rubbish but it's not when you've got as much bloody hull as a decimator!

^It's also not JUST a free evade and a single point of agility... It's that, backed up by Palpy. Kenkirk is in the middle of the PS crowd, and that's ideal for saving Palp defensively against Aces -- if you don't roll well, you can guarantee two damage mitigation. If you do roll well, Kenkirk can smash some extra damage through when it finally gets to his turn.

All that hull and two guaranteed (well, barring stress or some card effects) evades is HUGE! Potentially even better than a shuttle with Sensor Jammer (who still gets slapped if the opponent took an appropriate Focus action).

If TLTs didn't more or less neuter the two ship meta, I'd absolutely be playing this at tournaments.

(Tangent: I'd be interested to see the math on Kenkirk w/ Palpy & Lone Wolf vs. Predator. Maybe I'll just run a game with Kenkirk solo, just to see how long it takes to get burned down...)

A decipalp list won the store championship I was just at. His list was all about PS, though -- PS 10 and 11 with a 3-point bid:

Chiraneau + VI + Engine + Palp + Rebel Captive (62)

Vader + VI + Engine + ATC (35)

Total: 97

Instead of Palpatine for defense, he was mainly arc-dodging for defense and using Palpatine for offense. When I played him, I don't believe he ended up with a single blank red die after modifications the whole game. It's a scary list, though it definitely needs to be flown well.

I've been trialling something very similar and unfortunately those Shields and Hull points tend to melt away quite quickly against any high quantity of fire.

Against other 2 ship lists you'll likely do well with it, but the number of turreted weapons will determine how well you do.

I found that even 2 Y-Wings with TLTs can cut through you, and you'll be struggling against their 16 total hits, let alone the other 50 points in their list which can easily be a tooled up Corran Horn, Aggressor or similar which will give your 30-35 point ace.

Great fun for non-tournament games though
