Lists for Evenly Matched Casual Play

By Thrawn86, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I just started playing this game last month, and would like advice on how to create evenly matched games with the ships I have available. I play with my wife and two of my kids, and it seems like 90% of the time whoever uses Baron Soontir Fel wins. Here's what I have so far:

- Original Core Set

- Force Awakens Core Set

- TIE Interceptor

- TIE Defender

- TIE Bomber

- A-Wing

- B-Wing

I recently ordered:

- Millennium Falcon

- Hound's Tooth

- IG-2000

- Most Wanted Expansion

Can anyone give me some general advice on how to create matches with the ships that I have so that the opposing forces are fairly evenly matched? I have no interest in participating in any tournaments, just having fun at home since we're all big Star Wars fans here. The matches don't have to be strictly 100 points (we've been using 60 lately so each team gets 2 ships).

Thanks!

bump. I'm guessing since this was my first post, and it took a while to get approved, that nobody saw it (only had 3 views after a couple days).

Looks like you have slightly better options for imperial and that might be causing problems. I suggest proxying cards. Let everyone build their own lists and take whatever upgrades they want (use a squadron builder to find out what's out there). Obviously limit ships to what you actually own.

It might get better once you have the falcon, since that's a powerful ship for the rebels, but if you do start running large-based ships, I would suggest going with 100 points since with less, it can be very difficult to destroy a large-based ship (sometimes---its very list dependent).

Don't use soontir to start with.

After more games you'll see more ways to mitigate the baron but he's still one of the most slippery ships in the game so he's gonna be difficult to handle for beginners.

I agree you should proxy cards using squad builder apps/sites. This game is still very balanced and natural counters exist to pretty much everything but right now your probably still trying to joust him. Stress, turrets, blocking, bombs, stealing/denying tokens and so on can all cause ships like fel problems. Kill him first is the usual strategy when your at full resources.

Soontir is a very slippery ship to begin with. The natural agility of the tie interceptor combined with the fact that he has the highest pilot skill available to you means that it's pretty easy for him to dodge out of the firing arc of any given ship.

Playing 2v2 at 60 points a side probably only makes this worse since each player only has a single ship to command (by the sounds of it). This the primary method of dealing with him (boxing him in with more than one ship) isn't really available to you.

Things will get a little easier once you have the falcon to work with because the turreted weapon is much harder to evade. Things will also get a little easier if you can get more ships on the table, since this also makes it a bit harder for soontir to escape.

However until either of these things can be put into effect soontir will dominate the table a bit.

Since you're playing casual I (like the above poster) would recommend keeping him off the table until you have the tools to better deal with him.

Until a player masters Soontir, he's not much of a threat. My friends have played for some time now and still cannot manage to get interceptors to last.

As for the OP, you seem to want actual lists for pick up games (no thinking). May want to keep to generics to avoid strong aces in low points.

Scum option.

Slaver - outlaw tech, K4 with

Hired Gun: ion turret, title, Unhinged

Or

2x BlackSun Soldiers

Another idea is to try 'hunger games' free-for-alls.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Much appreciated. I just got my new scum ships (IG 88, Hounds tooth, most wanted), and now IG-88 and Bossk are making life unbearable for the opposing players (because of huge amounts of firepower). I think I'll take the previous poster's advice of keeping to generics for now. I'll be more careful about what upgrades I use, since IG88 and Bossk are workhorses when fully loaded.

Sorry for my ignorance, but what is meant by "proxying" cards? Do you mean use upgrades that we don't actually own?

Awesome I got a Squad builder for you and yes, Proxying cards is using cards that you don't own.

Try this, and see how it works.

Oh interesting. Thanks killakan! Didn't realize that kind of thing existed.

I meant the list but this works too.
