Determined Chewbacca (timing question)

By Causal Pants, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Chewbacca:

When you are dealt a faceup Damage card, immediately flip it facedown (without resolving its ability).

Determination:

When you are dealt a faceup Damage card with the Pilot trait, discard it immediately without resolving its effect.

If Chewbacca has the Determination EPT does he discard faceup Damage cards with the Pilot trait or flip them face down? Does an upgrade or Pilot take priority? Which immediately happens first or is it up to the player to decide?

Whenever you have two different triggers that happen at the same time, you choose what order to resolve them in. So you could do either, but the smart thing to do would be to discard the damage card entirely. (:

Not sure how to put it any better.

That was my assumption. Is this stated somewhere in the rules? I was unable to find it while searching for timing or conflicts.

Rules Reference, p.8 "Card Abilities", fifth dot point:

If multiple abilities resolve at the same time, the player with initiative chooses which of his abilities to resolve and resolves them in the order of his choosing. Then the opposing player does the same for his own abilities.

Though just straight-up discarding the damage card sounds great please remember there are a total of 8 Pilot trait damage cards in the damage deck. You have a 24.2% chance of getting to trigger Determination and, unless your opponent is generating a crit-load of {kaboom} results, you're even less likely to use Determination before your opponent skins themselves a wookie...

Getting use out of Determination has always been questionable but costing only a single point it can save ships from certain criticals that it would be unusually bad on them. The more hull points a ship has the more likely it is to see a face-up damage card that can be discarded while at the same time the more likely that the face-up card's issues would stick around to have a major long term effect.

The best place for Determination is probably with Leebo. This is simply because when dealt that face up card Leebo gets a number of cards to pick from making it more likely that a pilot card can be chosen at which point Determination can throw it out.

If Chewbacca could ever equip DtF and Determination like an A-Wing could I think it may get used as an anti-crit tool. DtF would need to be used before the face-up card would be known but with Chewie that card would either get discarded due to Determination or Chewie would just turn it face down.

Determination on Leebo however doubles those chances. Only good use for that upgrade honestly. But that's just my opinion :P
