Bomb detonation timing. (mines)

By Full Metal Wingman, in X-Wing Rules Questions

When exactly do mines detonate? I know when someone overlaps with maneuver or base, but is it when they place the template down or after they have moved and placed their ship?

This will be very important for Sabine as they need to be with in range 1 of the token to receive the damage.

All the Mines detonate immediately when they are overlapped.

That means for Sabine, any ship that is in range 1 of the Mine when it detonates is fair game. Which would be immediately after some ship overlaps it, or as soon as the mine token is placed, if it's dropped on top of a ship.

So if the maneuver template overlaps the mine, before you move the ship, the mine detonates and you roll for damage?

I'm not sure... Until now it didn't matter where the ship actually was when the mine goes off... But in the case of Sabine, the ship that set off the mine could be the target of her ability.

The FAQ says the mine detonates immediately when a ship or template overlaps it. Clearly is the ship overlaps it then it's at range 1.

Ships don't actually move over the length of the template they effectively teleport from one end to the other. So if it detonates immediately when the template overlaps it, I'd say you'd have to look at the position of the ship at that time, because you remove the token after it detonates. That means if it's not in range 1 of the token when that happens it isn't a valid target for Sabine.

Even if the token where to stay until after the maneuver, you'd still use the final position of the ship, if again it's not at range one at that time, it's not a valid target.

With Sabine this will still end up being a bit of a corner case. You'd have to be doing a really long move with the bomb token at the very end of the template to not be within range one of the token at both the start and end of the move.
