Too many squadrons?

By Crabbok, in Star Wars: Armada

The only problem with dual faction ships is getting LFL/Disney to sign off on them. They may never approve of giving the CR-90 or the Neb B to the Imperials since they're somewhat iconic for the Rebels.

I could see a new ship that's dual faction. But I also think they'd have be running low on options before that's likely. Out of all the ships in X-Wing 4 are dual faction, and none share between Rebels and Imperials.

Looking forward to armada catching up with the Star Wars X_Wing ships.

I would like to see some more medium ships.

Ah, who am I kidding: I just want a replacement for the AFmkII. I'm came dangerously close to caving in and getting one during Black Friday... the temptation to join the BROAD-side of the force...

I'm hoping the GR75, liberty, and wingless liberty will come soon so I can replicate the formation that jumps into Endor. Then I shall talk in Admiral Ackbar voice.

I really would not mind seeing sqaud packs where they are 2 rebel 2 imp with releases. A 2 ship per side with 1 sqaud of mixed ships would be a sweet spot I think.

I'm a fan of someone's previously mentioned idea of say GR-75s with two A-Wing escorts (on one pack). Maybe a Gozanti with Interceptors? I know Gozantis carried TIE Fighters, but we all have enough of them, don't we?

I'm also not too keen on Nebulons and the like being used by both factions. I get the idea behind it, but it just doesn't appeal to me. I'd rather have different ships for different factions.

And hey, I talk in an Ackbar voice whenever my partner reveals a concentrate fire command!

Rebels is putting a lot of good choices back into the cannon. A pure carrier with minimal armament, such as the Quasar, would be awesome.

Rogue Bombers.

I jizzed at this idea.

I think that a squadless wave or two would be fantastic. No need to cloud up a ship game with squadrons. That being said, ships to utilize squadrons in different ways would be fun. I'm a big believer that we will see pure carriers eventually.

I'd also like to see dual faction ships. Nebs, Dreadnaughts, ect where applicable.

Agreed. Hold off on the squadrons and flush out the different ship classes first. Simply put if FFG stays close to the ship variety and stats that Sins of a Galactic Empire has I'll be a happy camper.

Specifically I'd like to see the Rebs get the Quasar Fire Class as a DEDICATED carrier and the MC40 as a tank/carrier mix with the imps getting more cruiser/frigate love.

I 2nd (or 3rd or whatever we're up to now) the idea of the next squadron pack being all about support ships on squadron stands. Rebel transport, Gozanti class, Lambda class, etc - I also think it would be fun to have some unique titles for squadrons (with a token to mark the squadron with the title). Feels more cinematic to see Red squadron and Gold squadron out there together (each with a little bonus due to their title), etc...

If wave 3 were 2 ships for each side plus a support squadron, I'd be very satisfied.

I've looked through the XMG range more than a couple of times looking for inspiration in terms of additional squadrons and what I've been able to come up to make a additional squadron pack with is slim; there are plenty of nice models (but also some real fuglies), but making a coherent pack out of them would be hard.

Empire:

VT-49 Decimator - Love the model, it's a nice little gunship. want to see it in armada.

TIE Phantom - nice model fits in with the TIE/Empire ascetic, not sure on an Armada role but whatever I've got a open mind.

TIE Defender - again nice model fits in with the TIE/Empire ascetic, its an Imperial multi-role heavy fighter.

Inquisitioner's TIE- whomever worked on this at Disney got it right, it looks like a tie but is different enough from both the TIE Advanced or any other TIE design to be it's own thing, not sure on a role in armada other than as a character cross over vehicle, but who cares it sexy.

Mist Hunter/whatever the name of that ship model is - Like the design and the president for giving the empire bounty hunters and their ships exists as of the rouges and villains pack.

Lambda Shuttle - it's a ship that has been pretty far up there on my all time favorite star wars ships since I was a small child. I also like how XMG mechanics for it worked treating it like a sort of AWACs / foreword air control type ship.

Rebels:

Z-95 - it's the rebels vanilla TIE fighter equivalent easy to see a role for it in Armada.

Ghost and Phantom - Star Wars: Rebels tie in, nice models, plus it be cool both on the same stand and have a two model squadron stand.

K-wing - I'm not crazy about the design, I guess it's role is being the rebel counter point to the TIE Defender.

E-Wing - another fighter I'm not crazy about the design of, it's like a neutered x-wing, TIE Phantom counter?

Scum:

The various scum ships; the Kihraxz fighter, the M3-A interceptor and the StarViper - some I like and some I don't, but without the inclusion of a scum style third faction in Armada it's a moot point to discuss them in depth.

As I said In the introduction I have a hard time seeing a combination of these that forms either a single faction fighter pack or a split faction fighter pack.

Additionally models that have been released in XMG and not Armada there are the GR-75 Rebel Transport and the Gozanti class Imperial Assault Carrier. My preference would be to see these released as small capitol ships rather that squadrons and their role to be sort of a light carrier and/or a support ship.

I NEED Tie Phantoms and Defenders.

I'll honestly be shocked to see Phantoms. It took a ton of work to get them to work well in X-Wing, including a nerf after the fact.

Not sure how they could do it in Armada, short of giving all Phantoms scatter or something.

It would be pretty easy i think. Make it so that they have Tycho's ability.

I want Defender's! I am just not sure how they would work. . .

K-wing's

*throws up*

get that **** out of here!

E-wing would bridge the gap between the X-wing and A-wing, and it would give the Reb side a Speed 4 fighter with bomber ability.

Its anti squad dice should be something better than an A-wing, but not as good as the X-wing, say 1 black and 2 blue dice.

K-wing would be a very fast B-wing on steroids, i would say speed 3 maybe 2, But with a Boost ability that can make it move at speed 5, with the penalty that it can't attack at the end of its movement.

As its heavy weapons load is like a Star Wars version of a A10 tankbuster, its anti ship dice would be at least one black if not two black dice. or One Black and one Red.

The vanilla version would cost in the region of 20pts if not more.

Oh for F..... sake, will those Ewoks stop rolling snowballs down that hill

They could always bring back the fleet carrier the Empire had in the old Rebellion video game. Maybe a medium with meh hull and crap weapons, but a squadron value of four or five and plenty of room for Boosted Comms/Expanded Hangar. And a Rebel equivalent. They had a similar ship in that game, which I think was/is going to be on Rebels?

I wouldn't say there are too many squadrons, though. There are three squadron packs. That's it. I would actually like to see FFG put out a pack for each type of fighter. If I want to run a bomber swarm of, say eight or ten, that's eighty to a hundred bucks on just fighter packs.

Do we need K-Wings, E-Wings, Tie Punishers and Tie Defenders?

Yes!!! Duh! :P :P :P

Lambda

Decimator

Z-95

Loads of extra titles, cheap ones with minor effects that can add character. Maybe 4-5 each for the common classes, CR90s, Nebs, VSDs, Raiders, etc.

Freighters

Winged MonCal

Common, almost mundane stuff, with character as opposed to "balls to the wall" must have, power gamer items.

Interdiction ships would make things really interesting but would need to be implemented very carefully for balance.

More objectives?

I really do think there is a place for ships that can be used by both (or eventually more) factions

We need the Venator...

I think that new unique squadrons would be cool - maybe a mixed squadron pack of squadrons we already have with new pilots (Corran or Tycho or Biggs in an X Wing, Chewie or Lando in the Falcon, Turr Phennir in the Interceptor, Arvel Crynyd in an A Wing, Kyle Katarn in a HWK, etc.)

Or maybe upgrades to unique squadrons that minority buff their abilities? I don't know.

I'd like to see a transport pack with the GR75 and the Gozanti.

I to feel the lack of the GR75.

The roles the GR75 could have is:

Fireship; Overlap an enemy ship, roll three black Attack dice against enemy ship ignoring its shields. Remove fireship afterwards.

Communication Relay ship; When at distance 5 of an friendly ship and a friendly squadron, you may pass on squadron commands between the two even if they are not within command range of each other.

Fighter ECM ship; All Enemy squadrons within distance 5 are Heavy.

Fire control ship; Once per turn one friendly ship at distance 3 may add one attack dice of any color in both of its attacks.

Sensor detection ship; Instead of an attack, you may move any mission related tokens on the gameboard within distance 5, up to distance 2 away from its original position.

More Ewok snowballs. ;)

Thinking back on my ye old Star Fleet Battles (SFB) days, there should be some kind of introduction to boarding party combat. This would be a handy introduction to the various assault shuttles out there. Unfortunately this would mean a reconfiguration of the ship cards where you would have a certain number of security teams (defenders) and a certain number of boarding party teams (attackers). You have the shuttles as the delivery system, and then have some kind of boarding party combat ensues.

I think more ships should be introduced before squadrons- unfortunately the canon universe is pretty limited. Perhaps freightors or planetary to ship combat or base combat.

If I was FFG, I would look to having more factions- even if it they are not canon or EU- variety is the spice of life.

variety is the spice of life.

I have to say though, I think too much variety can be the death of a deliberately focused IP like Star Wars.

For something like 40K or Flames of War or SAGA, variety is great. There's dozens of factions, if not more to mine for playable units, and there's almost always scope to add more stuff. But Star Wars has a limited scope. There are two factions, rebels and the empire, and that's it. Adding more like the Yuzhaan Vong (or whatever) or the Chiss doesn't add to the game, it detracts from it because (IMO) it dilutes the IP. It stops being Star Wars and becomes another generic sci-fi style game. And if I wanted that I'd be playing Firestorm Armada or the new Halo game.

You can always just collect Empire and rebels if that is what you like. Arguing against myself (and again from SFB)- introduction of new technologies can have an unbalancing effect. The problem with just two faction is that it's kind of boring- especially as a tournament style game, and also from a business standpoint- limits the amount of $$ that FFG can generate.
