Where is the man with the spoilers?

By Fingolfin Fate, in The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game

Well, it is that time. Usually within a week from the "shipping" state someone starts posting the spoilers. Now, I am eager to see the rest of the Grey Havens (as there still may be quite a few). I wonder that after all these years, I still feel the anticipation. Do you?

And please, someone, if you have it, share it!

If history is any guide I will be opening my box a week from tonight. Usually all of the cards are spoiled by then, but if not I will be the spoiler.

Can't wait! <3

While I do tend to eat up any spoilers I actually like not knowing. At this point I'm going to actively avoid any more spoilers for the box so I can seem them all for the first time when I get my hands on them next week!

Wow, you must be at least willpower 3 character then? I could never do that...

I agree. I honestly think I enjoy opening the packs more when I have no idea what is in it. Yet, I can't seem to not seek out the spoilers :(

Here's a mini spoiler from the French announcement article for the Grey Havens: the last ship objective, Nárelenya.

Grey Havens. Ship.

Immune to player card effects. Sentinel.

Reduce by 1 the cost of the first ally you play each turn.

If the Nárelenya is destroyed, its controller is eliminated from the game.

It's also interesting that Voyage across Belegaer uses 6 encounter sets.

Any minute now...

I am just getting into the game and just want to buy every single expansion but that is not possible at the moment. I have the core set and one expansion for it. Should I buy them according to their original releases or should I buy what ones I want to play?

Oh, I saw a new post, I saw the links, but then… don't do that to me, haha

hahaha oh man I'm sorry dude...

Had to help the new guy and get the topic back on track. I realise now how exciting and misleading seeing my links in a new post must have been..

In the meantime has everyone seen Lanwyn and Azain Silverbeard?

This BGG thread has all the upcoming spoilers in case anyone has missed any of them:

I hadn't seen Lanwyn... That's pretty cool. I sure wish there were ways to cancel surge more but this is far better than nothing. I'm just sick of all the spirit heroes that have 3 attack when Tactics isn't allowed to blend into the other spheres so much.

You just wait for Tactics Eowyn to pop up

The only problem I have with Dernhelm is that it will be like the early days with Eowyn and Glorfindel now - the card will be in every deck. (Unless they do a stat mod.)

Who?

Who?

Honestly can't tell if joking.

Welcome, both to the game and the forums!

Opinion on this is kind of divided and there isn’t really a “right” answer. Picking up the APs in chronological order of release certainly gives you more options both in terms of player cards you can build with as well as Quests you can play (as picking up a random AP can leave the already thin narrative incomprehensible outside of the context of its cycle—not to mention without the associated Deluxe you may literally just not be able to play the Quest). But getting an idea of the type of deck you want to build and target-buying only those Deluxes and APs that are “Must Haves” for that deck archetype can be a much cheaper option in the short-term, even if it leaves you with fewer Quests you can actually play…

I’ve talked about this a lot recently here so I’ll just quote myself from a previous post since it's all pretty relevant:

As for “Must Have” expansions…it kind of depends. There are several if you are trying to build a specific “theme” deck. Dwarves, for instance, want Return to Mirkwood, Khazad Dum and the two Hobbit boxes. Outlands and Gondor really want the Heirs of Numenor Deluxe and most of the Against the Shadow cycle to be able to do some deck-building within the trait-type.

But for my money, chasing any specific player cards is the wrong way to expand this game. Or at least, the less satisfying way.

Personally, I always recommend to new players to start with the Core Set and (difficulty aside, because it WILL be hard) see if they like the game. From there if they want to expand, I always point towards the first cycle—The Shadows of Mirkwood. Not because these quests and player cards are the BEST (they aren’t, though most of the quests are very solid and enjoyable) but because they are designed specifically to slowly teach players the finer points of the game quest-by-quest. Hunt for Gollum introduces some interesting treacheries and focuses on finding objective attachments, Conflict at the Carrock forces you to learn to deal with powerful Boss-type enemies and strategies to do so, Journey to Rhosgobel teaches you about treachery management and healing, etc.

And while many of the player cards have since been replaced with more effective alternatives as the cardpool has grown, some are still very clutch (the Dunedain signals, the resource-fixing songs, A Burning Brand, Fast Hitch, Dain, etc.).

YMMV, of course. I would never say that my way is the ONLY way. But I definitely think getting the expansions chronologically provides the best experience so that you, as a player, can grow along with the player and encounter cards. And after you finish Mirkwood, Khazad Dum and The Dwarrodelf awaits with a focus on Noldor and Dwarf player cards and more combat-focused quests (also secrecy, but that will take a LONG time to pay off in the cardpool) and that is a perfect place to slot in the two Hobbit Saga Expansions (with their very heavy focus on dwarf-traited player cards).

Anyway, long comment is long. But whatever you choose to do, I think you’ll have a lot of fun. :)

I knew who it was but I didn't see any spoilers regarding that character. Am I missing something?

EDIT: Ah, nevermind. I see it now, lol.

Lol, I thought you were referencing some spoiled card and I was looking everywhere for it. I don't know much about the LOTR universe. I have seen the movies, but I don't remember much.

In all seriousness, there won't be a Dernhelm hero for the same reason there's no Strider hero -- it would allow playing the Eowyns together.

Though sometime I do plan on breaking the rules and playing Treason of Saruman with a Leadergorn/Loragorn/Tacticigorn deck. When clones come to Middle Earth....

Sure, but many of us call Loragorn "Strider" and some call Tactigorn "Thorongil". If we ever get a tactics Eowyn I'll be calling her "Dernhelm".
