Troubles with X-Wing in Russia

By circk, in X-Wing

I hope you get to play and can get the game, but saying you had a large turnout of 80 people for a national, is not many really - our local store championship had 87 players. I guess we might have it good here, with about 5 store championships in a 20 mile radius at least.

Hopefully you can get official stuff going again!

Hello, friends!

I'm one of Russian TO.

We started in early 2014 from small tournament for 11 players, and in 2015 we organized two Regionals in Moscow (54 participants) and Saint-Petersburg (32 participants). National Championship had 82 participants.

Now (in early 2016) we organize tournament series in 8 cities. We wanted to buy Store Kits for them, but FFG sad NO. All players are very sad about it.

Today we created petition. Help us please!

Signed, hope it helps.

It is not small number if you compare to other european national championships. Even very good number, considering population density in Russia (one of the lowest in the world), wast territories and weak gaming traditions. Also, russian community still rising.

well, the US can actually boast having more players than the rest of the world, so... that sounds realistic.

You know, its almost like some people enjoy officially licensed swag instead of average Joe body goods. Why do you keep disrespecting their issue like this? It's an actual problem. Personally? I find most non official acrylic stuff rather hideous, same with some of the art for custom cards.

Sure, it takes all sorts, but there's a HUGE range of appropriate merch out there suitable for tournament prize kits. I don't understand the fascination with the FFG kits. In fact I don't understand the fascination with the FFG tournaments at all. Why aren't there any independent tournaments? Why are they all 100 points? It's so BORING!

There are escalation, epic and team epic tournaments. We had escalation and epic tournaments (and standart dogfight obviously).

Same situation in Asia... licensing issues, folks have started to go online for kits and quicker stock.

Hopefully the term for the license ends soon for whatever it is restricting Disney to do so...

Might be that the cheapest alternative would be to order from an adjacent country and have them ship to you.

I know that Alphaspel.se ship outside of europe, but it's a bit pricey. (and their website is in swedish)

But there should be similar online shops in fx. finland or the baltic states.
Depending on where in russia you are, it might even be easier to order from Greece or some other country.

Move to a country that doesn't invade its neighbors and become the subject of international sanctions.

Everything has a cost. I'm sure you are personally a nice person but this is a much larger issue and Disney or any other United States based company will probably not be very interested in listening to your plea.

Thanks for that helpful advice.

Not cool dude! Also not very helpful either.

I sense a lot of hubris in this post...!

At the risk of derailing a thread...

Unlike the US which only invades far flung, poorer nations for a variety of economic & political reasons?

I sincerely hope you don't live in the US to be naive enough to make a statement as stupid as this.

OK guys, let's leave the politics out of this and get back on topic shall we?

Because the only thing that's worse than a troll is a flamethrower-butted political troll with kindergarten level vocabluary.

ahem.

But yep, the best answer is likely "order it to Finland and then simply take a ride there from St.Petersburg.

This is the way to obtain season or store kits, but regional or national kits are bound to specific locations.

We received answers from FFG and Hobby World (russian distributor) representatives - they point to each other and to Disney :(

The fact that hobby world SCYKS is well-known (especially for the speed and butt-level nickname translation.)

But hey, what the hell, the kits are never national-translated, so why is it supposed to be a hobbygames territory? They don't make them like at all

This is the problem, as I understand. Hobby Worlds has rights to sell kits, but doesn't make them. FFG makes kits, but hasn't rights to sell them.

P.S. Regards to Bubon and Gruuumsh!

I work in the licensing/IP area for a very large company and unfortunately, sometimes good customers get caught up in the bureaucratic BS.

Not sure how FFG's licensing or business is structured, but when I have inquiries from parties we're not authorized to do business with, I'm not even allowed to reply due to our legal department. Their hands could be tied in how they're able to respond, if at all. I know it leaves you in the dark and without answers but clearly there's some licensing or trade issue from preventing you from getting stuff and that sucks. Hope it gets cleared up soon.

If only it was as easy to drag Gruumsh to the X-wing :D

Maybe we should comission some Leia pin-ups

We're already somewhat responsible for reducing our 40k like 33%

Hmmm.....that is not a favorable position to be in. I'm sorry it's happening.

I think there are three things you can do:

1) Try to find a helpful store somewhere else in the world where they will buy the tournament kits and you purchase the kit from them. I know there are a lot of game stores in the US that don't purchase kits, so finding one that would want to get involved with you would do it. You would have to pay for shipping and it would cost more, but it's a way to get the kit to Russia. Charge for the tournaments to pay for the kits.

2) Buy the items off individuals and ebay as you can find them. It's harder and might cost even more, but something you can try to do. Charge for the tournaments to items.

3) Find a 3rd party company that has stuff you like and buy or ask for prize support from them. Not the same as official stuff, but at least you can get something unique from them. Maybe even have special stuff made up for events like specific tokens and all.

For #1, you would probably have to find a sympathetic store owner somewhere that doesn't use their own kit and would sell you theirs. They would have to ship it and that would be a pain. They would also probably want a profit for their time.

1. and 2. This is actualy fine...unless FFG founds ouT as it is forbidden to resale the kits. I dont realy agree with this FFG policy. I like Corvus Belli policy on this matter - everybody can buy a kit and make a tournament. I have about 10 very good friends and I want to make a tournament for my Birthday - however according to general policy I can not. But there are places where FFG inquisitors does not fly yet...

3. There are a lot of companies in Russia and (sigh - well I know you are currently at conflict its not that far from our borders) Ukraine selling a lot of terrain and acrylics and some very nice X-Wing things (like Sceter). Anyway in our country - there is no single tournament not to pay for entry. No BnM shop will make tournaments for free (incuding official ones).

I understand that it does not help with the general problem - what the... hell is going on with official support

BTW for those of you thinking that Games Workshop Realy sucks, realy start with Osprey Wargames :-)
