TMNT Descent/Imperial Assault

By Sithborg, in X-Wing Off-Topic

so keeping an eye on it.

Well for me sadly profit sharing doesn't come until March... and while I can manage $90, I think $150 is out of reach for me on this short of notice.

But I'm pretty much set to back it at $90 and pick up anything I happen to miss out on latter.

It explains how the villains do stuff, with their cards. So, villain packs will have a small deck of cards for them to do stuff.

Thanks for posting that.

It's an interesting dice mechanic with sharing dice. But it does make me think that only one turtle isn't a good option, unless it's Raph. So if you had 2 people on the turtle side, they almost have to play all 4... Which wouldn't be a huge issue.

I wonder how the allies work... do you replace a turtle, so it's Raph, Casey and April, or are they for extra people.

Also one thing this game seems to lack is any sort of XP/Level up system like in IA, so far there doesn't seem to be any way to improve your characters... But that can actually be a good thing, less book keeping between games.

Same goes for their maps. Looks like they may all be basic rectangles with grids. Which is nice because it would be easy to set up, but less options than a title based system like IA.

All in all it looks like it's on some levels simpler then IA is, but the actual game play could be as if not deeper with the dice sharing thing.

There is no scaling, so 4 Heroes have to be played. Kevin Wilson mentioned on BGG that he had a tough time with it in Doom and Descent, and still a bunch of complaints.

In ways, it is simpler, sure. But the dice sharing adds a greater co-op feel, imo. Also, range attacks get weaker the further away they are (lose attack dice). And there is a penalty from moving away from enemies (additional +1 movement point for each enemy adjacent).

As for the maps, I think the tokens can add more variety.

ok. :)

It seems like it's less RPG and more boardgame, then say IA or Descent is... IA at least felt like a RPG lite. Which isn't better or worse, in some ways I like the fact that you don't have to track as much between games.

I know for IA, a fair chunk of time was spent between games doing bookkeeping and spending XP/Credits. But yeah the co-op part will add a lot of depth when playing the game.

Sure, and would allow for a lot of custom maps. But the maps won't have the variety that a title base system does. Again not better or worse, just different.

From the battle dice, it seems that like X-Wing they're favoring offense over defense.

And dear lord, is the kickstarter comments section toxic.

Internet tends to be that way... What are they complaining about now? It looks like the Works package is starting to become worth it, with Splinter and the mousers. Or is that the issue that the basic packages isn't getting enough?

Also do you have any idea what this may retail for? I've been hearing some people say it could be as low as $50, which seems rather low, but makes the kickstarter a bit less attractive.

It is 280 for 6 in the Retail package. $50 is an insanely stupid low markup. And just comparing to Descent and Imperial Assault in terms of number of minis, $90 sounds about right.

Good point. I remember thinking I'd point that out to my LGS owner and so I figured it was $46 a box. That means it's going to have to retail for more than $50

Yeah, I doubt $4 would cover shipping.

They're adding a new map and mission to the standard package now, if the next SG is reached.

But BGG is now becoming a place I'm going to avoid, the only discussion there seems to be why this game is doomed to fail, and how bad the KS is being run.

Apparently I'm a shill for IDW because I don't think Shredder, Casey, April, Bebop and the mousers should be included in the core set for the price they're asking.

Bebop? Didn't see him last time I checked... Rocksteady?

Bebop? Didn't see him last time I checked... Rocksteady?

Neither are in yet. The current SG's are Eastman's studio as a playable map and mission for everyone, 6 more mousers and I think another lithograph for the Works.

But some people seem to think that their favorite character really should be part of the core set, regardless of how core the character really is.

Because I gotta say, the 4 turtles and Shredder are really the only truly core characters and even then Shredder is at best the main badguy.

We will see. I have seen comments that with the first batch of stuff, they want to focus on the first year of the comics, which was before they appeared. Though, they did tease an Angel/Nobody sculpt. So, they are probably planned, just much a much higher up goal. Especially since they are likely to be really large models.

Never read the comics so I know only really know the characters from the cartoon and nintendo games. I expected to see Baxter with the mousers.

No clue who Hob, Alopex, or Karai are. Angel/Nobody? also no clue.

Give me R&B, Leatherhead, Krang, Baxter the fly, Slash, the Neutrinos, Usagi Yojimbo, the Toads and Mondo Gecko.

I want to like this. I want to want this. But the characters aren't familiar enough for me to bite yet.

I was in as an Early Bird on this and it just doesn't feel worth it, to be honest. I'm sticking with it for another week or two... but I'll probably end up cancelling my pledge and waiting for retail. It's probably gonna be available for like 30-45 bucks retail, as opposed to a 150 dollar pledge.

Shame though, all I really want is those Eastman version minis. The game looks fine and all - just not $150 fine. Maybe there will be some amazing stretch goals the last few days.

Pity. It is based on the IDW comics, and it draws from every previous incarnation of TMNT. While some of who you want have been part of the comic, I think some are being held for future expansions.

Though, not knowing Karai is a bit weird. She has really become a mainstay of the franchise in the past decade.

I don't see how it retails for less than $80. It is coming with a lot of miniatures. The $90 pledge is worth it because you get 2 $18 packs for free. But, everyone places value differently.

There's no way it would retail that low. The retail pledge is $46 per box, and no one is going to buy it for a retail store if they take a 16 hit per box.

I fully expect it to retail for $75-90.

I still don't think the works package is worth it myself. The only thing it really offers that I consider valuable is Splinter and the mousers. The mousers are nice because they'll actually be a solo player addition, comes with AI cards that I think will be akin to the ones for the HoAC campaign.

But those and Splinter will be sold separately and I bet fairly close to when it's in stores.

So anyone prepared to guess the final tally?

I'll start - $780K

Prize = bragging rights

Obviously no guessing within the last 48hours and extra kudos points for earlier guesses that are close ;)

I'd guess $675K

Did anyone watch the play video? I was going to do that today, but wondering if it was worth the time or not?

I watched bits of it. Yes I think it gives a good overview of the game mechanics and dynamics. Some observations:

The co-op between the turtles is strong, lots of talk on dice sharing and strategies,

Little down time between players,

Better understanding of how the villain player controls their minions,

Some interesting pearls fell out during the Q&A too.

The overall response was pretty positive in the comments. Although the test components didn't include any miniatures so it wasn't all that visually appealing.

I don't know the quality of what the minis will be like, but I just saw what Wizkids has on display at Toy Fair.

Oof.

Not good?

Some of the sculpts look okay. But globs of paint. Globs of paint...

And now, Bebop is a Works exclusive stretch goal.
