Agent kallus Question? Ran into this the other day, how does everyone play it

By eagletsi111, in X-Wing

Agent Kallus:

At the start of the first round, choose 1 enemy small or large ship. When attacking or defending against that ship, you may change 1 of your focus results to a hit or evade result.

I always assumed it meant only the ship he was on wound receive the bonus, but I played someone the other day on Vassal and he stated that it affected all of ANY of his ships that were shot by the identified ship.

How do other play this?

No.

Kallus only effects the ship he is on.

"You" in X-wing does not define the player, it defines the ship.

CARD INTERPRETATIONS

Many Ship card abilities use the word “you” to refer to the corresponding ship. Upgrade and Damage cards that use the word “you” refer to the ship to which the card is assigned.

Agree on all Stone37's points.

I agree, but it doesn't say that. I couldn't argue one way or the other. So I let him have it versus all ships. It says your, no where does it state it's just your ship.

Interesting indeed.

If it was all ships it would have to cost at least 8 to 10 points to not be broken.

"You" = the ship with ability equipped

"A friendly ship" = all your ships

"Another friendly ship" = any friendly not including the ship with ability equipped

This is true across the board for all cards with this language on the card.

Read the FAQ, "you" is explained there.

Man people can just get away with anything.

The regular use of "you" makes this an easy way to read it, but if you look across the upgrades, you'll find that FFG consistently uses "you" to refer to "this ship". For example, Expert Handling says "if you do not have the barrel roll icon, receive a stress token". This does not allow my X-Wing to barrel roll stress free just because the Outrider is in my list. Check your other upgrade cards; its all over the place.

"A friendly ship" = all your ships

"Another friendly ship" = any friendly not including the ship with ability equipped

This is true across the board for all cards with this language on the card.

Is this verbiage in the rulebook somewhere, or is it just agreed upon by everyone? FFG uses this kind of verbiage in a lot of their games.

*edit: Thanks costi

If "you" is the player then a LOT of pilot abilities are significantly more powerful. Luke Skywalker, for example, would allow you to change a focus to an evade every time you defend. Clearly, this is a different game than the one we play.

If we interpet Kallus as applying to all ships, then so do Tactician, Gunner, and a host of other such cards.

The rules specify that when a card says 'you' or 'your' it is referring to the ship on which the card is equipped.

The game basically breaks entirely if you interpret cards this way. Just a single example off the top of my head: by equipping a ship in their list with Fire Control Systems and Advanced Cloaking Device, ALL of that player's ships would then get a target lock and a cloak action when they shot. Not just the Phantom it was equipped on.

E: wow, a lot of people responded whilst I was on the phone! Sorry for piling on.

Yeah the guy you played was a ****.

Thanks guys. I thought so, but wanted to confirm. I actually ended up winning anyway. Actually, he was french and his English wasn't so great. So I didn't want to argue and just wanted to have fun.

And for "Friendly" and "Another Friendly":
RRG, pg. 12
"FRIENDLY
All ships controlled by the same player are friendly ships.
• Ships cannot attack or acquire target locks on friendly ships.
• A ship is friendly to itself and can affect itself with any of its abilities that affect friendly ships unless those abilities explicitly affect “other” friendly ships"

Yeah the guy you played was a ****.

Maybe. It's a pretty common mistake for newer players though. I like to give people the benefit of the doubt.

I agree. Benefit of the doubt while calmly showing them the rules with authority. :D

A TIE ADVANCED PROTOTYPE MAY NOT HAVE THE X1 TITL -... Oh sorry, wrong ruleslawyering.

Stone37 answered it enough to /thread .

Yeah such a powerfull global ability for 2 points does not sound suspicious. Not at all!

I'd like to think that, but then again if the person is using Vassal they're probably not THAT new.

One of the more experienced guys at my LGS made the same mistake a week or two ago.

Mistakes happen. This is why FFG has scans of the current rules and FAQs on their website. You should never be without them.
