I was excited to use these pilots but it seems like the new TIE F/O pilots have cast a rather large shadow on them. So have any of you used these new pilots with positive results? If so how?
Anyone using the new TIE fighter pilots from the Gozanti?
Wampa
The only one worth using as his ability is pretty crazy as opposed to crazy situational
Great filler, great imperial Biggs; occasionally wins games with crits
Edited by ficklegreendiceI've been running Wampa. Love that guy. Have him paired up with Lt Colzet, Vader and a Palpatine shuttle. Doesn't leave a clear target priority for the opponent.
I ran Wampa alongside a Palp Shuttle, Omega Leader, and Vader at the FFG store championship last Saturday. The list propelled me to 17th place out of around 90 players. Being able to punch one damage card under shields works amazing, almost guaranteed when paired with Palpatine.
Wampa, fairly frequently. For what he does, he's great value. If you can use his ability a couple of times, it's great, but opponents often find him so terrifying starting out that he becomes a cheap Biggs. Works great with Palpatine, obviously, but at 14 points it's often hard not to warrant him.
I gave Chaser a go in a miniswarm, but I couldn't find much actual use in him. Opponents would just leave him until last, in which case his pilot skill becomes useless, or use Omega Leader to deal with him.
I haven't tried Scourge yet. I'm finding it hard to justify him over pretty much anything else.
It's not so much that the FO pilots have cast a shadow on them, but that most of them are unfortunately quite poor.
Wampa is by far the best, for reasons others have mentioned, and is seeing tons of play. Scourge is solid, but nothing really special. He's also a bit awkward price-wise, in that he ends up costing more than you want to spend on a ship that is routinely OHKO'd.
Youngster and Chaser, meanwhile, are just duds. Youngster might be useful if there was an EPT worth using with him, but there isn't so he doesn't have a reason to exist. Chaser, meanwhile, also lacks a reason to exist. You can stack as many Focus tokens on him as you like, but you'll only ever spend 1 of them when he attacks as your opponent isn't going to waste on him when he can instead shoot his wingmen.
Chaser's not bad. It's not stacking up focus tokens that makes him worth it; it's having Push The Limit "baked in" to an Obsidian Squadron Pilot for one point. He works well with Night Beast - both of them can evade (making them hard to kill), and still have focus tokens for their shots.
Youngster is good. Really, really good. BUT whilst he doesn't have 'large ship only' or similar rules, he's there for epic games, not for 100 points. The first time I used the new TIEs was a full TIE squadron with a Gozanti versus a Raider with a mix of heavy fighters.
In a 300-400 point game, with 11 other TIE fighters all within range, Marksmanship goes from so-so to utterly terrifying. Equally, Expose can work if you have a source of dice modifiers built into the other TIE fighters - Night Beast, Chaser and Push The Limit work very well to massively increase the firepower from a TIE fighter block.
Wampa is the easiest to use in a 'normal' game. With Palpatine on the board, he becomes terrifying - I watched him gun down a B-wing last night without once touching its shields.
They get a lot of use in a 300 point game. Scourge and Wampa play very well together. I love the idea of Youngster, but there are so few EPTs that are Actions. It's a shame his ability is not all TIEs in Range 1 may use your EPT as if it was their own.
Wampa was all over my local store championship. Faced a mini swarm with him (wampa), scourge, howl, one black-crack, and carnor. Scourge had swarm tactics and we called it scourge tactics every round. It was a really fun game.
Scourge with crack shot is part of my epic build. He flies alongside Mauler Mithel (also with crack shot). At 18 point each, one deals the damage card and the other takes advantage of it. It's pretty sweet ![]()
I'm waiting for the Inquisitor to use a list that uses only Tie and Tie FO pilots that increase their firing ability. I swapped out The Inq. for one of the mid tiered Tie Adv. to good effect, though.
Inquisitor - V1, Autothrusters, and VI
Zeta Leader - Crack Shot
Scourge
Mauler Mithel
Backstabber
Considering swapping Crack Shot on Zeta to VI on MM.
Wampa, of course, is good for cost and his spot.
Scourge + Crackshot though, feels good too.
I definitely consider both of those ships when building lists, and they both make their way into the final build quite often.
I like scourge quite a bit, but every time I list build imperials I end up with enough points to make him high Roller instead.
I'm running a pedo-swarm (Exposed Youngster), and loving it.
Outside of Wampa, I have seen Scourge once, and Youngster I have flown a couple times (to give Wampa Marksmanship, which, probably isn't the way to do it I've decided), but Chaser never.
Honestly, I think Chaser is really not that bad at all. He's just... Boring. And that has a big impact on whether a ship gets flown. His ability isn't very different from other things we've seen, so it just isn't riveting to fly him.

I have yet to try this. 1 more red die without an action isn't all that great though, so I've been thinking about boosting the effects with a Fleet Officer to hand out Focus tokens.
I have had a good deal of luck with a Baby Sniper Build
Youngster + Marksman
Mini swarm

I was looking for a way to make Fleet Officer viable a while ago and came up with something I found surprisingly good.
Space Cowboys
Omnicron w/ Fleet Officer, Adv Sensors, and Anti Pursuit Lasers
Backstabber
Dark Curse
Night Beast
2 x Academy
I could dish out the 2 Focus and then do a green move to clear stress. Night Beast often got a free Focus. I'd dish out the Focus to whoever I felt was going to get shot at. I found that the Tie Fighters were considerably survivable with a Focus and an Evade. I was really quite surprised at how well it worked.
You can get a Tie Shuttle with Fleet Officer soon for even less.
What upgrades, if any, do you put on Wampa?

Colzet with FCS, Palpatine anywhere on the board
Scourge + Decoy, Wampa. 33 points. Wampa fires first at PS7. He cancels a crit and sneaks a damage under a shield, then Scourge fires and rolls 3 dice.

Wampa's the first pilot that can use Targeting Computer effectively.
If you re-roll your hits as well (vs a ship that scoffs at 2 max damage, like Fel), then you have a 1-(7/8)^4 chance of netting at least one [KABLAM] result.
That's a 1695/4096 chance, ever so slightly better than 2/5 chance.
And that's terrifying.
Of course, if that TC misses, you can use Palapaplap offensively...
Wampa is the big one because his ability can ignore shields and tokens stacks which is prevalent in the meta today. (Time to run R5-D8)
.
As for Youngster the action EPTs are just not that good on a TIE Fighter. The firepower is not good enough to justify marksmanship over taking a regular focus and their hitpoints are too low to where you would want to use expose. Expert Handling might be good for a ATC hate card but then that means Youngster would be targeted first by Vader and other ships would simply ignore it.
Scourge with firepower boosting effects is one of the best effects for TIE Fighters but the trigger is the weakest as many other ships will be packing shield regeneration and a high shield-to-hitpoint ratio. So you will still get more 3-4 dice from Backstabber and Mauler Mithel than Scourge.
Chaser can be put in a swarm with 2 Obsidian and 5 Acadimies but leaves them vulnerable to upskilled TLT-wings.
Scourge is pretty good - he can run crack shot - and he's almost always got his ability on vs the larger ships.
Chaser almost always has a focus for offense - so he's a nice little offensive front runner - give him a targeting computer.
