HEAVY SCREEN FOR INSTIGATOR CONFIRMED FALSE!

By clontroper5, in Star Wars: Armada Rules Questions

So we just received a confirmation email that Heavy Fighters do not prevent bombing runs on instigator. I thought I would make a new thread just incase you didn't check the bloated original thread. Anyway the response (after the ***)

In response to your question:

Rules Question:

Hi! I have a question about Armada, spcificaly about the Instigator title and heavy squadrons. If the Instigator is engegeing an enemy squadorn with it's two imaginary squads, the enemy squad can still attack ships as the engement rule says you must attack engaged squads "if possible" and if Instigator is the only source of engegement, it clearly is not possible to attack a squadron. But if we add in a squadron with the Heavy keyword, it then becomes possible to attack a squadron, so would the enemy squad then be forced to attack the heavy suqadron instead of a ship? The heavy squad, as per the key word defenition, can not prevent attacks on ships, but in this case the imaginary squads can as they don't have the heavy key word.

****The enemy ship can attack the Instigator despite the presence of the squadrons with Heavy. The enemy squadron cannot attack the “imaginary” squadrons created by the Instigator (since it isn’t possible), and the Heavy keyword means the enemy squadron doesn’t have to attack those heavy squadrons. The Heavy keyword is intended to remove that Heavy squadron from the set of squadrons that must be attacked before the ship can be attacked.

Good call. I wouldn't expect anyone to venture near that wretched hive of scum and villainy unless they are already invested.

Not what I would have argued myself, but I'm just glad they answered the question!

Well it's good that was solved. Was that from Kniffen?

Yes, got my response yesterday too. Looks like somebody had a long day of copy-pasting the answer to this.. :)

Yeah, I just went back to the original thread and read the paste. I'm sure when Mr. Kniffen announced he was sending an answer out, there was a collective, "AAAAWWWWWWWWWWW" in the FFG office.

I wonder who won the office pool?

But given how long the thread went on without an answer it didn't really degenerate into name calling and what have you. Much more of a heated competition than a spite fueled brawl. Maybe I just missed it because the mods here are total ninjas or something but I didn't note a great deal of "adult supervision" in the thread.

I'd agree.

Same for me, I saw it the other way, too (though I was quite conflicted about that). I agree, glad to finally have something definitive. :)

Same.

From a practical standpoint, what does Impetuous do if it can't use a Heavy screen?

  • Disables grit with 1 squadron.
  • Triggers Swarm with one squadron

Is there anything that I'm missing? If it can't use a Heavy screen, it isn't useful with TIE Bombers (or YV-666's, if you wanted them for whatever reason), and it doesn't do anything against Intel. Under what circumstances would you take it over more fighters?

Or, from a more extreme point of view, any other upgrade, given that it costs points to do what Squadrons do for "free" (bundled into the cost/overhead of squadron commands and the bases themselves)?

An odd first post, I'm sure, but I've been mentally wrestling with this question for a while, and I had to ask it before it rattled my brains into mush.

It can pin squadrons in place until it moves away. If you drop it in the middle of enemy fighters, they count as Engaged when they activate, and so are stuck there.

That's just off the top of my head. I haven't fielded it, myself. Someone with more experience can probably give a better answer.

I use it in my Tournament build.

Basically instigator is good because it can tie down Intel ships and is the only garenteed way to Prevent a bombing run in wave 2

Also I use it over more squadrons because of the extra activation

it's kind of situational, but definitely has its uses.

Example: I used it once as ablative armor for a nearly-dead ISD. My ISD was all up in an MC80's grill, and both were down to taking hull damage, with a cloud of bombers just off the ISD's nose that hadn't been activated yet. The Raider zoomed in and tanked the squadron hits, stiffarming them to keep the ISD alive long enough to blast her quarry and gtfo.

I think it's one of those "if you're already taking the Raider anyway, may as well" upgrades. Kind of like Jaina's Light or Relentless.

The Raider zoomed in and tanked the squadron hits, stiffarming them to keep the ISD alive long enough to blast her quarry and gtfo.

Why didn't the bombers just attack the ISD anyway?

Weren't in range--they were waiting for an activation as I recall. I should note that this game was a couple months ago and I don't recall all the details, but the concept is there.

How long does it survive to do that?

Though I suppose that the answer doesn't usually need to be more than "one turn," with your list, Clon.

Exactly, it is my sacrifice to the dice gods so my Black dice eat up everything else

So it supersedes Intel?

So it supersedes Intel?

Yes, because the Intel ship can never be within Distance 1 of no where. The squadrons they are engaged with literally have no position on the board, thus cannot be within range to be Intel'd.
